Part Thirty Three - FNG

"It's good to see you Staff Sergeant."

"You too Prest--Vice Admiral Cole. It's been a while. I thought you'd retired." Blade replied, in an informal tone.

"Called back into duty Blade. It's worth it though, just so we can kick these Covenant bastards out of Harvest once and for all." Cole replied, clenching his gnarled fist to emphasize his point.

"You really think we can do it?"

"I know we can. Now Blade, we should talk. In private. Is there anything your two squad members should be doing?"

Cole looked at me and Mains as he said this. Cole obviously thought Mains was part of our squad. Blade didn't seem to mind.

"You two," Blade ordered, and I snapped to attention, "go down to this ship's armory and see if you can get us all some ODST armour. See if you can find an officer's one for me." Blade ordered, and I sighed. We were being shoved out out of the conversation.

I walked out of the room, and Mains followed. I was glad no one knew he was actually a URF commander, over the past few weeks I'd come to value his friendship.

"So, it seems I've unwillingly become part of your squad then." Mains commented as we walked down the hallway of the ship.

"It seems so, for now at least. You don't mind do you?" I asked, worried he might resent the fact.

"No, I have no trouble working with you and em..Blade. So tell me, where is the rest of your squad? Surely it isn't just you and Blade?" Mains questioned.

"No, there's two others too. Rook and Switch. They're em...I actually don't know where they are. Hopefully they're okay."

I felt bad, I hadn't thought once about them since I arrived on the UNSC Virmire. They could be stranded, or dead for all I knew. Then again, they were with Spartans. So I felt confident in the belief they were safe.

"Yeah..." Mains muttered, and looked down at the floor.

We rounded the corner and found ourselves at the Virmire's armory, a large room full to the brim with technology and weapons. I spotted a man standing in the corner, and assumed he was the Master Gunnery Sergeant. He seemed to be tinkering on a piece of equipment. I cleared my throat rather loudly, and he turned around with his pistol out. He saw we were human, and holstered the weapon, standing up.

"You two gave me quite a fright there. How can I help you boys today?" The Master Gunnery Sergeant asked, looking at us with bemusement. He was quite old, younger than Blade, but older than say, Switch was. Grey had begun to infect his hair.

"We need some ODST armor, three sets." I replied confidently, and the Gunnery Sergeant frowned.

"Well this could be a bit of a problem. See, I ain't got any ODST armor left. Although, I suppose there is the new prototype, came from Sognam just before we left for Harvest."

"Prototype?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

"Yep, Navy's been working on it for a long time. Stronger, lighter, and interfaces directly with whatever weapon you may be holding, displaying the ammo count on your HUD. Even them Covie weps too." Master Guns replied, walking over to a cabinet. The man typed in a code on a keypad next to the cabinet, and the door slid away to reveal three suits of the Prototype ODST armour.

"And that's not all. You got one of them ODST PDAs son?" Master Guns asked, and I nodded. Well, I did have one, before I lost it. The older armory master continued. "You won't be needing it anymore, not with this suit. It's got a new feature in named the Visual Intelligence System, Reconnaissance. VISR, for short."

As he was speaking, he fastened the suit around my clothes, doing up the straps and claps that kept it all together. Wow, it really was light. Finally, the Master Gunnery Sergeant passed me the helmet, which seemed to have a see through visor. I put it on, and the helmet polarized, filling my vision with blue. A moment later, and the visuals clicked in. Master Guns picked up a remote.

"Now, VISR has a built in GPS system." Master Guns explained, hitting a button on the remote. I gasped as a full 3-D map of the ship appeared on my screen. Impressive. "You can place way points on it, by using the wrist computer on your arm, and VISR will place a marker on your HUD in real time, pointing you in the right direction."

"It also has a low light vision mode." Another button was pressed, and this time I was brought back into the real world, except everything had a glowing line around it. Master Guns and Mains were highlighted in Green, and the scenery was outlined with yellow. "This is particularly useful when dropping into combat at night, and it's very simple to understand. If you see green, squad up. If you see red, shoot."

I decided I was keeping the suit. Luckily, when I asked him, Master Guns said I could. Which was great. We also suited Mains out in the ODST Prototype armour too, which he seemed to like.

"It's a large step up from when I last wore armour like this." Mains remarked, depolarizing his visor. I did likewise.

"Now." Master Guns said knowingly, thrusting another suit of the armour into my hands for Blade. "If you experience any problems with the VISR, don't hesitate to take the helmet off. It's better to be vulnerable and without tech than it is to be blind."

I promised him I would, as did Mains, and we thanked him, setting off back to Blade.

"Just try not to die in it!" The Master Gunnery Sergeant shouted after us. "We can probably retrieve it, but the blood would be a trial and a half to get off!"

I hoped he was joking.

Marines walking around the ship stared at us as we walked by, sure, ODSTs weren't as much of a rarity as Spartans, but we still turned heads. Most of them were probably thinking about how we were crazy bastards for dropping into battle like we did. I didn't mind their looks, I just polarized my visor so no one saw my face, and Mains did likewise.

We arrived back at the command bridge soon enough, and Blade, to my astonishment, was drinking a glass of whiskey with Cole. I didn't even know Blade drank. They must've known each other really well, as they were laughing together.

Blade caught sight of us in our new armour, and stood up with a puzzled frown upon his face.

"That armour looks different. Is it new?" Blade asked, and I tried to relay everything Master Guns had told me to him. He seemed satisfied, as he grunted, and asked me to help him put it on. I complied, and within a few minutes Blade was suited up fully too.

"This feels good. Shame there wasn't an officer's model, I guess I'll just have to stick a white label on or something. Were these three the only suits available?" Blade asked, and I nodded. Blade tutted, and titled his head in thought. "I guess Switch and Rook will have to make do with their old tech then."

I realised what he just said, and looked up sharply.

"Switch and Rook? You know where they are?" I asked hopefully, and Blade gave a slight inclination of his head.

"Yeah, we got a signal from them not ten minutes ago. Apparently, they took over that Covenant outpost by the Waterfall, the one near that old base we were in. Switch re purposed some equipment and sent out a signal. The Virmire received it, and Vice Admiral Cole dispatched a Pelican out to pick them up. They should be here in a few hours. Seems they also picked up Captain Smithe too. He'll be helping navigate a ship in this fleet, as much as I hate him he's a damn good Captain when he sets his mind to it."

Smithe? I'd thought he'd died in the attack. I thought it unfair that someone like him would survive when Captain Andrew Lars had died. Really unfair.

"Oh," Blade chipped in, "the Spartans were also with them. Which is excellent, we'll definitely need their prowess for the upcoming mission."

"The upcoming mission?" I asked, perplexed. Well, I hadn't expected that we would rest for the next few weeks, but I thought all that we'd just be fighting off boarders.

"Of course, we're ODSTs. We're born for missions." Blade laughed. He then turned to Mains. "I've explained your...situation the the Vice Admiral Mains. He's happy to reinstate you as an ODST, give you a second chance. This is bigger than the UNSC and the Rebels now, the very future of human kind is at risk. We can't afford to fight amongst ourselves. So what do you say, feel like joining my squad?"

I was surprised. Blade had shown nothing but distrust for Mains since we had first met him. And now, he was inviting him to our little family!

"I'd love to Staff Sergeant." Mains saluted, "I haven't forgotten my training sir, don't worry."

"Very well Corporal Mains, welcome to the squad." Blade congratulated, and we all shook hands. "Looks like you ain't the FNG anymore eh lad?" He then said to me, and I smiled. Cole proposed we all toasted to the squad's success with a drink. Even I was allowed, despite technically being underage. The liquor was strong, and burnt my throat as it went down. And it had a foul aftertaste. Honestly, I wasn't sure why it was liked so much. But I drank it all anyway.

"So." Mains asked as we were all sat down in leather couches. The ODST armour was very flexible, I didn't feel uncomfortable in the least. "What's this mission we're embarking on?"

"We'll wait until the others get there before we talk about that. Needless to say, it's vital to our victory. And it's incredibly dangerous." Vice Admiral Cole replied, suddenly all business. Blade nodded.

Dangerous? I didn't like the sound of it already. Ah well, I was sure sure we'd all be fine. A memory of Det sacrificing himself on the Covenant ship rose unbidden, and I dismissed it. Jesus, that had been over three months ago. It certainly didn't feel like three months. So much had happened in that time, I was now a fully trained, capable ODST soldier, bane of the Covenant and whoever got in my "goddamn way", as Blade would put it. A deadly weapon in my own right.

And whatever the mission would be, I was going to make sure that I killed every Covenant soldier that crossed my path.

*************************

One hour earlier

"BAM!" Rook shouted, whacking the butt of his rifle into the unsuspecting Grunt guarding the controls. The creature squealed in pain, and attempted to run. Three rounds from the MA2B stopped it in its tracks.

"Was there any need to shout like that Rook?" Switch asked warily, flexing his fingers. The electronics expert approached the Covenant console, and furrowed his brow. Micheal stood guard at the entrance to the small room, waiting for Fin and James to return.

"Well, that's all the Covenant. And you know, I just wanted to scare the crap out of that Grunt. Worked didn't it? Squealed like a pig." Rook replied defensively. Switch sighed.

"Yeah, well, whatever. Now shut up and let me concentrate."

Rook also sighed, and stared around the room. It was pretty amazing, the architecture was beyond anything humanity or Covenant could achieve. Blue streaks ran up the wall, almost like electricity. It felt ancient, holy. A whispering echoed through the room, but Rook couldn't understand it. He laughed, it was probably just the wind.

Minutes crept by, the only sound breaking the silence was the occasional curse by Switch as he strove the crack the Covenant network.

"There we go, ha ha, encrypted my ass!" Switch suddenly shouted triumphantly, and both Rook and Micheal walked over to the terminal. On the screen were two flashing Beacons, with a very high altitude showing.

"Whoa, are Blade and Farm Boy flying?" Rook asked in bemusement, and Switch shook his head.

"No, too high for that. They seem to be on a ship of some kind. One moment.."

Switch typed in a few commands, and suddenly it made sense. The outline of a huge UNSC ship was clearly visible, encompassing the two beacons.

"Yep, they're definitely on a ship. I can probably contact it too." Switch said, typing in yet more commands. Suddenly, the room was filled with static from the speakers, until it cleared.

"This is Vice Admiral Cole aboard the UNSC Virmire, and you are not on any known frequency. Respond immediately." A human voice spoke, and Rook crowed in success.

"Wait, can they even hear us?" Rook asked Switch, but it seemed they could, because a moment later another voice spoke. A familiar one.

"Rook? Rook is that you?" Blade asked through the makeshift communicator. "What in God's name are you doing? Where are you?"

"Sarge?" Switch asked in puzzlement. "What are you doing with the Vice Admiral?"

"You're there too Switch? Well I'll be damned, shut up with your questions and start answering mine! Where are you two?"

"Well, we're in this Covenant outpost by that Waterfall we scouted weeks ago sir. We cleared out the Covenant with the help of the Spartans, and I suppose Captain Smithe too. Is Farm-Boy with you?" Switch replied.

Smithe was currently keeping watch further along the tunnel.

"I just sent him and Mains to go get some armour. I'll tell you who Mains is when you get here. Wait a second while we triangulate your position! And did you just say Smithe was with you?" Blade commanded, managing to ask a question too.

"Ah, forget it." Blade suddenly decided. "You can tell me when you get your asses up here. We've got a fix on your location, Cole's sending down a Pelican now. Be ready to leave."

"Roger that sir, I'm going to terminate this frequency now sir, it's on a Covenant network and they may be able to hear us. Corporal Switch, signing out."

Switch hit a button, and the room went silent. He turned to Rook.

"Well, looks like we're getting out of this mess. Come on, let's go catch our ride."

Yeah I was away when 31 and 32 went up.

As for the prototypes, I see but somehow they have the same capabilities as the newly released (as confirmed in ViDoc) suits in H3:ODST. May I suggest that something goes wrong with the suits in the story, to explain why they were not introduced until ~25 years later?

FanFicFactor
Forged in the Flames of Passion, go forth and represent!

Gah! It's been eight days in the making, and I have finally caught up with Memoirs of an ODST! Heh, you were probably thinking I'd never read it; you were wrong.

This is truly one of the best fanfictions I've ever read on Bnet, FF.net, anywhere. *Flashback* You were the novice in December...my August you have become, more or less, the master. There were so many parts in this story that really got me: I was shocked when Det sacrificed himself; I was touched when Blade and Farm-Boy had their conversation in the woods; I laugh until my sides hurt at anything Rook says. You have created a masterpiece. Print this out and hang on to it, one day, when you are an author :)

Oh, and to everyone, this is going to be the first ever story featured on Fanfiction Monthly, FanFicFactor's monthly newsletter...your pal Wolver is going to be interviewed, critisized, and beaten. You'd better be there...

Subject: [Story] Memoirs of an ODST (Part 33 available + image of Farm-Boy up!)

Here's Part 34, we're nearly at the Epilogue now. Enjoy!

Part 34: The Cole Protocol

"The Covenant control nearly all of Harvest." Vice Admiral Cole intoned, addressing us. Switch and Rook were stood next to me; it was good to have them back. "And they've nearly overwhelmed Harvest's commerce and supplies centre."

"Does that really matter? They can keep the food, it won't help them in the long run." Rook said, prompting a shake of a head from Cole.

"Son, I wish that were true. But food isn't the only thing in that building; navigation data is stored in the centre's data banks. Do you understand what that means? If the Covenant manage to decrypt that data, they know everything. Not just Harvest, but the rest of the colonies. Even Earth. So it's vital that we stop them, do you hear?"

We all nodded, realising how serious this was.

"So I'm initiating the Cole Protocol, Article one." Vice Admiral Cole said, sliding a document in our direction. I picked it up, and read it.

United Nations Space Command Emergency Priority Order 098831A-1
Encryption Code: Red
Public Key: file/ First light/
From: UNSC/NAVCOM Fleet H.T. Ward
To: ALL UNSC PERSONNEL
Subject: General Order 098831A-1 ("The Cole Protocol )
Classification: RESTRICTED (BGX Directive)

The Cole Protocol
To safeguard and protect the Inner Colonies and Earth, all UNSC vessels or stations must not be captured with intact navigation databases that may lead Covenant forces to human civilian population centers.
If any Covenant forces are detected:
1. Activate selective purge of databases on all ship-based and planetary data networks.
2. Initiate triple-screen check to ensure all data has been erased and all backups neutralized.
3. Execute viral data scavengers (Download from UNSCTTP://EPWW:COLEPROTOCOL/Virtualscav/fbr.091)
4. If retreating from Covenant forces, all ships must enter Slipstream space with randomized vectors NOT directed toward Earth, the Inner Colonies, or any other human population center.
5. In case of imminent capture by Covenant forces and borders, all UNSC ships MUST self-destruct.
Violation of this directive will be considered an act of TREASON and pursuant to UNSC Military law articles JAG 845-P and JAG 7556-L, such violations are punishable by life imprisonment or execution.

"The Cole Protocol?" Blade asked wryly, putting emphasis on the word 'Cole'.

"Can it Blade, it's as good a name as any. Be proud. This'll take a long time to come into full effect, but as far as you're concerned right now under my command, it's the law."

"So, you want us to destroy the commerce centre?" I asked. "Can you not just MAC Blast it from orbit?"

"If I could son, then that building would be a great big pile of smoldering ash, and we'd all be drinking champagne in celebration. But I can't, so the bottle will have to stay closed, for now. Direct your attention to the table." Cole replied solemnly, and pressed a button on the underneath of the Holographic 3-D projection tactical board. Also known as the table. On the edge of the board sat a hot mug of Coffee, and Cole grabbed it, taking a sip.

As he pressed the button, the tactical board sprung into life, and an image of what looked like a Valley on Harvest rose out of it. The valley was covered in snow, and there seemed to be UNSC and Covenant forces fighting in it. I realised with a shock that it was a live feed. Remorse swept over me as a holographic marine tumbled to the ground after being hit by a bolt of plasma. It may be a computer image representing it, but a real person, with a real family had just died.

At the end of the valley sat a...

"Sir, is that a bubble?" Switch asked, flabbergasted. It certainly looked like it, golden, shimmering, and very, very large. It was covered in Hexagon patterns.

"For want of a better word, yes, it's a bubble." The Vice Admiral replied. "And it's currently covering the commerce centre; projectiles won't penetrate it. The Covenant set it up less than a day ago, and the marines inside the commerce centre are on their last legs, they've had to fall back to the data mainframe room. We can't let the Covenant inside, or everything is over. I need you to blow up the building, before the Covenant can get their greasy claws on the navigation data."

"If even a MAC blast can't get through, how are we supposed to Cole?" Blade questioned.

"The bubble lets Covenant soldiers and craft through, and so I've made a plan. I've had placed inside each HEV pod on this ship a Jackal Corpse," the Vice Admiral revealed, and I grimaced. I could see where it was going, "yes, it's disgusting, but it should allow your pods to cross through."

"Why not just strap a Jackal to a MAC round and launch that?" Rook asked, and Cole laughed.

"Son, as ironic as that would be, it wouldn't work. The body would be incinerated by the heat caused by the super-heated MAC blast. So unfortunately, it's up to you."

"Lucky us..." Switch muttered, hopping from foot to foot nervously.

"Yeah, well it's what you signed up for when you joined the corps son."

"Technically, I don't have to be an ODST sir, it's a voluntary thing. But I get your point." Switch replied to Cole's patriotic remark.

"When do we mobilise?" Blade asked of the Vice Admiral.

"ASAP soldiers, every second we spend talking amongst ourselves brings us closer to the Covenant gaining access to that data. That can't happen. The HEVs are already programmed with their destination, and the Spartans are ready and waiting for you."

Micheal, James and Fin were coming along with us? I suddenly felt a lot more at ease.

Blade nodded.

"You heard the man lads, let's get to those pods." he said, already walking away from Vice Admiral Cole. The rest of us looked at each other, and nodded. We saluted to Cole, a motion which he returned, and we set off after our Sergeant.

"Good luck men, if you survive, then I'll recommend you all for the colonial cross! If not, well, you'll get them anyway, you just won't know about it!" Cole shouted after us, and we laughed, "oh, and Blade?" he added, "please try and stay safe, I don't want to lose you too. Not after Amelia."

Subject: halo 3:recon- the prologue....written in first person!!

I started at the mention of my mother's name. Then just as quickly settled down again. A coincidence is all it was. She was dead, that life was behind me now. My squad was my family now.

"Preston, I'm an ODST! I'm never safe."

**********************

"These new pods? They seem comfier." Rook conversed upon strapping into his pod. Switch sighed.

"They're always updating the pods Rook, you know that. They do it to please the families see, if an ODST dies in a drop. So they spend a few weeks designing a new pod, upgrade about half of them, and clear the conscience in the process."

I looked around the small confined space I was strapped into. There really wasn't much room at all, latched onto the side was a Sniper Rifle, an SMG, and a pistol. I'd actually become pretty could with the M7 Sub, in my weeks of training at the URF camp. Thinking about that reminded me of Mains.

"You all right there Mains?" I called over the intercom, and a loud metallic bang to the left spoke louder than words could of.

"Buckle up boys," Blade growled, and I groaned, knowing he had lit a cigar. How the man managed to keep it within his mouth when hurtling down to the ground at insane speeds was beyond me. "I heard they've got Banshees patrolling the area."

The Banshee. Aptly named, due to the screeching noise it made as it flew overhead. It was usually the last sound you heard to, if you were unlucky enough to be the poor blighter to hear it in the first place.

"But the dummy pods will distract them right sir?" I asked worriedly, referring to the dozens of HEV pods which housed no occupant, that were about to be fired alongside us. They'd hopefully draw the enemies' fire.

Blade simply grunted, for good or for ill I could not tell. I'd have prayed to god, but my arms were tightly bound for the upcoming drop.

Usually, there would have been some leg room within the HEV, but the other occupant made the space quite unpleasant. Not to mention the smell, emitting from the cold corpse of the Jackal in front of me, it's buggy eyes staring right at me. At one point, it had topped onto my lap, prompting a cry of horror from me. The resulting kick I gave the corpse took the thing's leg off.

"I don't like this sir, that Jackal's staring at me." Rook muttered nervously, and Blade roared with laughter.

"Of course it's staring at you, you big girl! It's dead, that's what dead things do, they stare." The grizzled Sergeant mocked, still chuckling quietly after he'd finished speaking.

"Well, couldn't they have closed their eyelids or something? It freaks me out." Rook replied stiffly.

"Do Jackals even have eyelids? I mean, they're like crocodiles, and they don't have eyelids. I think." Switch replied nervously. He always chatted when he was nervous.

"Why don't you check?" Mains spoke quietly, in jest. Switch laughed in reply, but it was short, and curt. Both him and Rook were still getting used to the fact he was one of us now.

"Enough chatter! We've got a job to do. So sit cozy, and fasten your seatbelt." Blade barked.

"Technically sir, they aren't seat belts, they're more of a--" Switch began, still nervous.

"Shut your trap Switch!" Blade snapped, "Fasten your seatbelt, or whatever technicality boy over there wants to call them, because we're in for a bumpy ride."

"Good one sir, 'bumpy ride', when it's not actually bumpy because we're in pods as opposed to vehicles, so it will--" Switch cut in again.

"Switch, I swear to god, I will come into the pod of yours, and shove that Jackal up your ass if you don't shut up!" Blade shouted.

"Yes sir, sorry sir." Switch replied timidly, and I smiled.

"Seeing as how I can't seem to give a rallying speech without being interrupted, let's just drop and pray that we see each other again."

I felt my pod swivel as it prepared to be launched at groundbreaking speeds down to the battle below. I felt my stomach flip, it was like the nerves before riding a roller coaster, but a hundred times worse.

"Hold on!" Blade screamed, and I held. I was surprised that my fingers didn't snap, they were pressing into the handles inside the HEV so much.

Then, without warning, the pods were fired.

I'd done this all before of course, but when we first arrived at Harvest, we did a low altitude drop, and there wasn't an entourage of Covenant awaiting us.

This was the real deal. Life or death. Survival...or extinction.

No, acnboy. Spartain Ken 15 is a lesser being. Much like the bacteria that lives in your shit.

My shit bacteria takes offense to that comparison.

Damn, just finished Part 35, but quit without saving :'(

I hate it when I do that.

By the way, I just worked out how to create a PDF file, and I can't believe Memoirs is equivalent to 87 pages so far! Anyway, when I'm done with book one, would anyone be interested in a PDF of it? Just to make for easier, continuous reading? I'd do the same with Insurrection too.
