Subject: Help: Halo 1 PC w/ 360 controller

Ok, before my question, a couple of caveats before I get flamed...

(1) I know that the mouse and keyboard are "better" than a controller for playing Halo 1 (or any FPS) on the PC. Nonetheless, I want to play with my 360 controller.
(2) I've searched the forums and the web and have found very little that directly relates to my question/problem. If this is documented somewhere, please just direct me there.

So here goes...

I configured my 360 controller for use in Halo 1 on my PC. It works great in campaign, pretty much the same as on the XBox. But the controls are weird in multiplayer. In multiplayer, the movement controls feel very loose. Press the left stick quickly to move left and I will continue to move left until I press the stick in another direction.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it just part of the PC port? Thanks in advance for your help!

Don't worry, it's just part of the PC port. There isn't actual " dead-zone" in the game. Other than that, there is only one walking speed.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

the 360 controller is flawed. I configured Halo PC to use my dual-analog Logitech controller and the sticks centered perfectly. There's no fix for using a 360 controller on Halo PC.

Thanks for the response!

To be clear and to confirm... With the Logitech controller, the controls in multiplayer are just as smooth, crisp, and responsive as in campaign? if so, which Logitech controller do you have?

Also, have you tried with a 360 controller? I'd like to confirm the problem is in fact controller related and not controller configuration related.

Thanks again!

I think the movement speed is different due to design and it's not something you can fix. I think Gearbox made only one movement speed to make the netcode more efficient. Analog sticks and all the range of directions and speeds you can move on one plane over the internet is not as efficient as having digital controls and only 8 ways to move (forward, backwards, left and right and the ones in between) on a plane and one set speed.

I used a wired 360 controller and the sticks would creep in one direction without being touched. The other controller was a Logitech Rumblepad. It was a little oversensitive but basically worked like the 360 controller minus the lack of dead zone.

Thanks n357! I'll try the Logitech controller.

My best advice is a store-bought controller.
I use the GGE909 Game Elements controller. It has a high sensitivity to my likings and the stick motion isn't as relaxed as the 360 controller, making it do the whole, "pan to the left" thing like mine did too XD

You can't use the wireless controller with the charger cable as the commands don't go through the cable, i think.

You need to buy the Xbox 360™ Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows for the wireless accessories to work for PC games.

You need the wireless gaming receiver. The charging cable just sends power to the controller.

Thanks Zekkalkan! I'll give the GGE909 Game Elements controller a look as well.

Actually, I used a Niko Airflow EX and a 360 controller and they did the same thing.

Giggity Giggity Goo - Quagmire

I didn't notice any problems with it, and I just set it up yesterday, (got decent enough computer to play it) and worked fine with my 360 controller.

I'm on the same boat, except the aiming thumb-stick drifts very slowly up.

It's probably a calibration error. Try recalibrating your controller.
