Heyyo,
I suggest manually saving your checkpoints for parts you wanna try over. I don't trust the autosave. So let's say someone wants to play Halo, they go in the campaign, get past a checkpoint.. OOPS! there goes your autosave checkpoint. This's probably what happened to you. If you manually save them, the only way they can get deleted is if someone purposely/accidentally hits the delete save onnit.
I'm rediculous now with saves, I'll manually save if I leave the comp just for a quick bathroom break even. Save games take what? 100KB's at the most? that's nothing. It would take 1,000 saves to start impacting your computer's harddrive space, so don't be afraid to manually save.
Half Life 2's savegames take I think 500KB's each, I have over 40 saves already, so if I wanna leap to a certain part? bam, I'm pretty much guaranteed to find it... eventually. ;)
