Well considering I have a 20 GB HDD, with only like 10GB left, I really don't think I should download any game :(

Nice to know though.

Darth Vader sleeps with a Teddywookie. Pass it on.

A truly wise man never plays leapfrog with a unicorn.

Any chance you could fix the article so that there's not that really cream-colored background to it? It's quite difficult to read the text against that.

Edit: Nevermind (and thank you!).

The End

"Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there."

Time to put my 120GB hard drive to good use... finally.

(Stupid 100 custom content items limit :( )

EDIT: Thanks for the article, I won't upload Halo 3 to my hard drive, it can live in the DVD port. I'll just upload all my other games and 'accidentally' forget the upload my brothers Pro Evo games when I weld the DVD drive shut.

On another note, can I store Halo 1 and 2 onto the hard drive, it is unlikely but I'm curious.

RIP Deathpimp72 - A friend, a brother, a man who will never be forgotten. This place isn't going to be the same without you.

RIP ~B.B.

I don't know if this is possible, but do you think it would be a good idea to put a pop-up or something in the game (similar to the one that told me about Halo 3: Recon) so that the people who don't come to Bungie.net as often are also aware of this?

I think that would really help to make sure people don't install the game to their HDD and slow everybody down.

  • 11.19.2008 10:19 AM PDT

Quick question: My friend owns Halo 3 but in moving around the xbox while turned on he scratched up the disk and in turn lost the ability to play Guardian or Narrows. Could he load Halo 3 using my disk then put his disk in and play? Slow load time is better than no load time.

  • 11.19.2008 10:25 AM PDT

I'm so over all of this.

Good info, but I still won't be installing anything on my hard drive lol. Sometimes things run slow enough as they are. I need not any more delays.

  • 11.19.2008 10:26 AM PDT

"Go then. There are other worlds than these."

That's good information.

Any way you can communicate this in-game with an announcement screen so people who don't read bungie.net won't install it to their drives?

Bad news, really. The DVD drive is very noisy and subtracts from the experience, although it is not Bungie's fault that the drive is noisy. Perhaps Microsoft will see fit to improve the product (NXE) in some way so the Halo 3 experience can benefit.

I was hoping they'd put the effort into patching it for this reason, but this is a much more cost effective solution. It's already painful enough watching a map load that you know is going to get vetoed anyway, no need to make everyone wait even longer.

Thanks for the update, I'll be sure not to install it.

Great, now every little griefer who gets off on making other people's online experience miserable is going to be loading Halo on their HD.

That 'in-game announcement' sounds like a good idea, not everyone is on B.Net everyday.

Reading through the story, I understand its not a good idea to download it to HDD but at the same it states when you switch games from H3 to H2 or other games and then back to H3, it makes it difficult to load.
But Halo 3 is the only game I play, would it be better for me to play as I am now or to download it to HDD?

I dont think that it would work well. Mat said that halo 3 will still copy the maps from the disc to the HDD (it can not copy them if they are not there). However, since the maps are not on the disc they may load from the install...........this would mean that Guardian, Narrows and DLC maps would load normaly but the rest would load slower.

Q: I take it that Halo 3 recon will HAVE to be installed to a HDD for the new maps to be intergrated with Halo 3 Matchmaking? Or will the new maps be saved to the same place as other DLC and then loaded into the utility partition?

Q: Do DLC maps need to be copied to the utility partition of the Hdd as well?
Edit: yes they must or the maps would be deleted when the cache is cleared (you play a difffrent game)

Q: If i install Halo CE, will this resolve the backwards compatability issue? (by issue i mean that i have to be offline to play it).

I can see why Mat was always so angry!!!! I need a headache tablet from just thinking about all of this lol. I respect you a whole lot more now Mat.

If halo 3 is the only game you play then it would be benificial not to install it. What they are saying is that whenever you play a game, your 360 copies maps ect to the utility partition so that they are easier and faster to load (they do not need to be copied from the disc). If you play a different game, your 360 will delete the perviously stored maps ect and replace them with content from the different game......so when you put Halo 3 back in it has to copy it all over again (taking longer).

Why are bungie being complete -blam!- over this? If it's a case that you're scared that people are going to pirate your games and you're not going to get any money then ever heard of a thing called chiped xboxs?

If it's for are own benifit then thank you but i highly dout it is seeing as we are talking about bungie....

Trailer Park Boys ~ One of the best Canadian made comedies ever.

Sigh, while Bungie did do a great job with the Halo 3 dashboard menu, I feel that this could have been forseen by the UI engineers before the release of Halo 3. Time and time again, I said having an in-game Halo3 friends list and party details like Halo 2 would have worked better for Halo 3. This whole problem could have been avoided, but instead, Bungie decided to put all stat features right into the dashboard.

Hopefully for future projects, this mistake doesn't happen again.

  • 11.19.2008 11:32 AM PDT

Well I now know I won't be installing Halo 3 to my HDD like I was planning on.

You obiously have no idea what you are talking about. You cannot use the install feature to pirate games as you still need a retail disc to play the game from the HDD. Mat explained quite well how not installing will benefit everyone.

  • 11.19.2008 11:45 AM PDT

just thought I'd add one plus scenario to installing to HDD.

we have two 360s in our home, two copies of Halo 3. however, my sons that primarily play on the 'family' 360 cracked their copy of Halo 3 a couple of months ago and in turn were no longer able to play (unreadable disc). due to their lack of responsibility with taking care of their belongings, i have not bought them a replacement.

i had a thought today, though, that if I installed Halo 3 from *my* DVD to the family 360, that maybe the 360 would still recognize their broken Halo 3 disc in the tray long enough for the disc check and they'd be able to play again now that the game is installed to the HDD.

im happy to say that it worked very well and my boys will be able to play Halo 3 again. it runs the game fine with the cracked DVD in the drive!
