Subject: Halo 3 & NXE

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

I wasn't going to do it anyway because I don't have a 120 GB HD, yet, but I when I get one, I will be sure not to install it. Thanks!

Halo 3 is normally already in my Xbox 360. I wasn't extremely excited for this part of the update.

The technical reasons were outlined above, but for a higher level answer, we shipped Halo 3 before Microsoft finalized this particular feature. As a result, we were not able to take advantage of it (or any other potential optimizations we discovered after shipping Halo 3). Perhaps we also coded too close to the metal.

Then what about the 360's without hdd? They certainly don't use the cache feature. The dashboard just needs to tell the game that no hdd is connected (and possible emulate a memory card for the saves) and you instantly have your 'optimized' version. I have a feeling much more games could benefit from the installations then.

As it's been mentioned previously, PLEASE put up an in-game message telling people not to install the game on their hard drives. While many people go to Bungie.net, I fear that the majority of people who play Halo 3 do not, and won't find out about the ill effects of installing Halo 3 on the hard drive.

Thanks for the update/warning. The podcast from a couple months back kinda warned of this before anyway, with the game being optimized for the hard drive already and all. Too bad a lot of chumps probably won't read this and rag on your game for not loading faster when it's really because it was designed better than most games from the getgo. Ah well.

I don't know if this is possible, but do you think it would be a good idea to put a pop-up or something in the game (similar to the one that told me about Halo 3: Recon) so that the people who don't come to Bungie.net as often are also aware of this?

I think that would really help to make sure people don't install the game to their HDD and slow everybody down.

Already covered. If you aren't already seeing the in-game message, you will be shortly.

Will it still be slower if I go through and pre-load all my maps?

Is there enough cache to store all of them?

  • 11.19.2008 1:28 PM PDT

That kinda sucks. My DVD drive scratched up my disk, and my Halo 3 disk is on it's last leg. I was just going to do this, but I guess I may just have to buy a new copy.

Ohai, I'm Loscocco (pronounced Loss-cocoa). I'm a college student (computer science major), 3D animator, and long-time Halo player.

hmmm- about that NXE.
my friends downloaded before they started playing Halo 3, right after they recieved a message saying things such as:
"Halo 3 was ment to be for disc only" and:
"it will make your games slower and your friends will make fun of you for it,"
Im not making fun of my friends... : (

they also reported to me that their xbox was not slower and they did not notice anything.
Im not trying to break from the pack and question bungie's super-intelegence, but...
are you sure it is slower? maybe it is because we have a 120 GB hardrive and the reports came from smaller hardrives. Because these downloads take up around 3 GB

Death is only the Beginning

Yeah... still going to give my rom drive a break. Ya it's a little bit slower but there's almost zero noise now!

What im trying to say is... Bungie are lieing -blam!-
I installed days ago and I can confirm it's slower. I had a film load from 1% to 45%, I honestly hope no one installs the game.

Good to know. I'll uninstall right away, I don't want to make my party wait for me to load the maps every time. I was particularly excited about this feature before this news though.

The "Halo 3 Splatter Spree" Theme is awesome by the way, I recommend it, and yes, it's worth the 250MS Points.

Do you suggest upgrading to xbox360 elite? NXE has alot of ups and downs in my opinion. Whatever though.

lol

hey guys, is it just me, or does halo 3 feel kind of sluggish, even if you haven't installed to the HDD? i mean, in-game stuff, not loading times.

  • 11.19.2008 4:07 PM PDT

I just hope Halo 3 Recon will make use of this new feature. Imagine the possibilities...

Agreed... or let Microsoft know and block installing of Halo 3 to the HDD

Believe it or not but match making is forever broken because you WILL ALWAYS run into a noob who installed the game and might as well quit unless you want to wait 5 min.

Can a Bungie Employee Please Respond

My question is will installing Halo 3 to the HDD cause any performance issues other than longer load times such as frame rate dropping more often?
