i've noticed that an overwhelming number of people, at least on XBC, prefer to play halo w/o the radar. i've tried asking why this is, but i usually don't get an answer that's much more insightful than "because it's -blam!-dar, man." i personally feel that you get more of a cat and mouse feel when you use it. you also benefit more from having a greater knowledge and feel of the level. i also think that more skill is involved since everyone can track your movements, and it's up to you to out wit / out play your pursuers. but i'd still like to know why others prefer not to use it, so let me know. and feel free to back me up if you feel the same.

The people I play with and myself don't play with it because it isint realistic. I mean over in Iraq do you think they have radar's where they can see their enemy?

Part of me wonders why people don't grow up and stop calling things they don't like by the discriminatory and homophobic label "-blam!-".

true. we have radar for air and sonar for sea. i think the only reason we don't have it for foot troops is because of the impracticality of having to cart around, what i imagine would be, a rather large piece of equipment. but then again the year isn't 25XX, whatever it is supposed to be in halo, and MC isn't over there regulating things. besides, haven't you ever seen the movie aliens? those motion trackers were bad@ss.

hey, i didn't come up with the term "-blam!-dar," it's just the more recognized form of saying that you dislike using it. but, yes it is an ignorant thing to do, and i hope i didn't offend anyone. BUT let's try not to get off topic here, please. this isn't a socio-political forum.

-blam!- is only slang for someone who is of homo-blam!- persuasion. -blam!- used to mean happy, jusy as now it is evovling into another word for stupid. The change has nothing to do with homo-blam!-s.

They got somehting close to that. Its called night vision, they also have thermal.

And radars are awesome. It takes skill. Just becuase you cant kill what see's you dont blame the radar. It helps you too. If you just crouch walk then cant detect you.

Radar is both good and bad. I like the friendly radar only setting (PC ver. only), that way you can still have that little benifit. Other than that, radar is just a cheap way of lazily finding opponents. Anybody on Halo for Xbox thats good will tell you the exact same thing. With it on, you can just aimlessly throw grenades at people.
Radar should only be used for the most chaotic CTF matches. This way when you respawn, you have some idea what's going on, but its kinda hard to use with all of your teammates cluttering it up.

well, there are two sides to that coin. one side of it being, like you said, "a cheap way of lazily finding opponents." the other being, that the opponents are too lazy to disguise their own movements or too narrow-minded to do anything but run and shoot. if you just want to run around, search and destroy, then i agree that no radar is better. but if you like to implement strategy and tactics, then i don't think you can compare the two. and actually, i consider myself to be quite good at halo for xbox, and i happen to not agree with you. and it's not "aimlessly throwing grenades" if you read your radar and can draw a conclusion as to where on the map the enemy is. quite the opposite, "aimlessly throwing grenades" occurs without radar, when you DON'T know where the enemy is.

No. Over in Iraq they have heat vision which has a much longer range. And it's not radar, it's motion tracker. Huge difference.

You are way off. The motion tracker makes up for the senses that cannot be incorporated into the game. In real life, a peek over your shoulder to check behind you takes all of half a second, and the motion tracker is there to help with that. Motion tracker does not pick up people who are not mocving, nor does it have a range long enough to locate someone with it. It does, however, allow you to know how many enemies are around you at all times; very handy in the middle of a big brawl.
That being said, when we have sniper matches, the MT goes off. This makes camping a lot harder because you have to constantly check behind you and you don't know what's around the corner.

That's a good point. However, it's a motion detector, which knows who is an ally because of the implant in all UNSC soldiers' heads.
I have just finished reading Rainbox Six also, and this mentions a heartbeat-tracker that can pinpoint people using GPS and knows who is who by radio IDs. And Tom Clancy is renowned for his use of available technology!

Actually they do have radar, but staying on subject radar is good because it takes more skill because the other team can spot you I also like it because I know how to be undetectible and I can sneak up behind my opponents instead of wasting ammo on them since they would die by my force anyway.

I don't like to play with it because you get the element of surprise on your side...that to me is more fun than playing with a radar.

If any of you say anything about the men in iraq not having 'radar' and youre comparing, youre crazy. They do have something to track enemy movement. And think about it, halo is in the year 2550 somethin, youre comparing THAT to modern day tech. Thats like comparing a kevlar vest to MJOLNIR. STUPID.

To tell you the truth, i dont care if peeps use radar against me or not. Hell, me and many of my friends hardly use it! (unless they're snipers) My friends and I are usually to in depth with head to head combat! (the best combat there is, cuz my reaction time killz!) besides, when ur that close in combat, r u really ACTUALLY gonna look at your radar? I'm always paying attention to whats infront of me!

I dont use radar (no, NOT -blam!-dar) because it detracts from the overall paranoia feeling of the game. You never know when someones sneaking up behind you or just around the corner. It makes the game more surprising and exciting with the radar off.

It's NOT a radar.
It's a MOTION SENSOR.

So no, it's not unrealistic.

I think it's great.

yea i totally agree with sniper davie. look heres the deal with -blam!-dar. there is really no point to invisiblity cuz they no were u r, u cant sneek up behind some1 and bash them unless there complete idiots and u can just throw grendades in there direction and kill em. definitely -blam!-dar. and they shouldnt even allow it on live.

Actually, you only appear on the MOTION SENSOR if your are running.
So you can still sneak up on them if you are careful.

I agree with badkarma. Ya made some great points. Good karma for you.
Personally I love the radar it's the thing that helps me win. Also you need to know all the levels to use it correctly (throwing a grenade, knowing if someone is around a corner or inside, above or below you, etc.)

The motion tracker IS realistic because the Master Chief has it in his Mjolnir armor. Don't believe me?

Radar is for noobs or people who suck. i realize that you can have "strategy" by hiding and waiting for someone to come around the corner or door by not moving - but I am not a member of the taliban. people try this on me all the time and if it ever works it works once then your spot is found out and people are being more cautious. only in 1 on 1 is it a plausible way to win because while you are standing still waiting for one guy to come into your strategical trap your teammates who are now outnumbered are getting killed. It takes all the fun out of the game because it removes the tension from every second. think how bad radar makes a level like wizard, which is already -blam!-, but the radar practically lets you see the whole damn level.

I can tell you why to not use radar, so you can sneek up and slap someone right in the back. Ahh, memories. With radar there is little up close contact. All someone needs to do is throw a grenade at the red "blip" and you're gone.
Radar is cool for people who are new and don't play much, but once you become a pro, it's not needed anymore.
Yah, i can see where some skill could be needed to sneek around a radar, but why sneek when you can shove a whole clip of high explosive pistol rounds into his face?
