That being said, when we have sniper matches, the MT goes off. This makes camping a lot harder because you have to constantly check behind you and you don't know what's around the corner.

I totally agree. Sniper matches are way more fun with no MT. It makes you feel so...naked.

I also tend to find that I don't rely solely on the MT, I just use it to replace what my ears would normally do, because, if no one noticed...you can't hear someone sneaking up on you like in real life.

Other than that, radar is just a cheap way of lazily finding opponents. Anybody on Halo for Xbox thats good will tell you the exact same thing. With it on, you can just aimlessly throw grenades at people.

..."aimlessly throwing grenades" occurs without radar, when you DON'T know where the enemy is.

I'm doubting that people will throw a grenade at nothing. If somebody spots you, and you hide, they will most likely whip a grenade (if they have a brain in their head) seems pretty well aimed to me. Whereas if you have radar, you can look at it, say, "ooooo, there's somebody" and kill them without ever actually seeing them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't absolutly hate radar. In slayer, it couldn't be more useful in killing campers or invisible players. Same idea goes to saving your ass in oddball or KotH. However, in CTF, its just cheap: you can't get into the base undetected unless its abandoned. It severly limits tactics.

The motion tracker defeated the purpose of the stealth powerup in many ways...

look guys, the motion tracker is a useless tool in multiplayer CTF games. If your dumb enough not to be sneaking around anyway, then u deserve to be killed. The best way to win a match is never directly engage the enemy where u might lose and dont let them know where you are. This means that you should always be far away from enemies so u can sneak by them, and if u have to kill them use hit-and-run tactics. Meaning shoot them with the pistol once mebbe twice, hide behind a rock before they turn around, then kill em when they turn away again. Using these tactics are second nature to me and my buds, so playing with the motion tracker is useless cuz u will never see us anyway.

How about people that just set next to their flag with a pistol/shotgun combo waiting for the red dots to show up?

That might work in mono-a-mono, but when your up against six people, direct engagment is a horrible option. I consider there to be 4 main stratagies in capping a flag. 1.) Full assault, which leaves your base dangerously exposed. 2.) Steath, sneak in unnoticed and catch them by surprise. 3.) Mad dash, screw sneaking and run like hell, hoping you don't get killed. 4.) A combination of 2 or 3 of these. Choosing a combonation of 1 and 3 is just a half assed attempt on the flag, so guess what your left with?

That's another benifit of no MT, you can carefully check for them, or snag the flag, immediatly drop it, and kill whoever tries to kill you.

The MT is useless in CTF because if you are dumb enough to be that close to your enemy you deserve to be shot!*

I think instead of the MT they should have a map with buildings, trees and walls on it as well.

But still have enemy and ally forces shown.

well, from what i've gathered, most of you that don't like using the tracker fall into one of a few categories.
1. you feel you lose the element of surprise
2. you feel it promotes camping in bases during games of CTF
3. you feel it handicaps better players by allowing others to "aimlessly" throw grenades at the little red dots.
4. you feel it is unrealistic
5. you feel your own skill is so great that it is rendered obsolete

allow me to present my own counter-points.
1. if you limit your movement speed, you don't show up on the motion tracker. so if you're concerned about being able to sneak up on someone to bash the back of their head in, move slowly enough until you're in a position that even if you run full out, they won't be able to react in time. again though, i believe using the tracker forces people to use more strategy and cunning than just running around shooting the first thing they see. it becomes a chess game, testing entry points and testing the opponents ability to successfully interpret the information at hand.
2. i rarely play a CTF game (3 vs 3 or more) where one person doesn't stay back to defend. so there's someone in the base with a pistol and a gauge, so what? that doesn't mean you have to make a b-line for the flag. pepper the base with grenades/rockets and flush them out before you commit. make sure the base is cleared before grabbing the flag and running.
3. as i've said earlier the word "aimless" denotes a lack of purpose. when someone sees you on the tracker and is able to correctly interpret the information into a map location, then he is making a planned attack. there's nothing random or unskilled about turning the corner to find a frag at your feet. try being less predictable with your movements, and check those corners before you turn them.
4. unrealistic? probably not in the year 25XX. probably not even by todays standards of warfare. maybe by unrealistic you mean unfair. it would be unfair if only one player/team had it. but all players/teams have it.
5. no player is so good that an extra set of eyes can ever be rendered obsolete. perhaps you're saying that you've been able to successfully neutralize the other teams ability to use the tracker. well, then good on ya'. that's part of the strategy isn't it?

hmm...that was a bit longer than i intended.

I love the Radar, and I think it will be a different story in H2 because of the stealth component, etc. Not many people know you can stay off the radar if you crouch walk....

i do happen to believe there should be a MT cloak in halo2. it masks the signal to the MT, but you're still visible.

I've got realism for ya. Play with 50% health, no shields, no radar and one life (rifle weapon set is what I prefer with this, but whatever floats your boat). Getting killed by 4 rounds from the AR makes you think twice about charging their base.

Oh yeah, and about the unrealistic part. Troops today (at least American ones) usually have satellites monitor activity on the battlefield. Troops and Vehicles can check a nifty little map and see where the other people on the field are and know if they are friendly or hostile (very nice at preventing friendly fire). Furthermore, I don't think Bungie cares about keeping human technology up to speed with 25XX standards. . . we use ballistic weaponry modelled after the guns in use today (AR = OICW with no accuracy or grenade launcher and a doubled clip).

This GAME ISNT ABOUT REALISM PEOPLE. It is about a desperate attemp of the UNSC to destroy the covenant which goes badly arry. It is based in 25**. One of the neat things about Halo is the fact that you have things like shields, nades that stick to people, and a real time motion tracker. If you want to play a 'realistic game", go play counterstrike or Tom Clanceys Rainbow six. Halo is a sci-fi game, which has many great features implemented into it. Like some people have said, radar takes skill to use... ESPECIALlly the nade throwing at a red dot (which i am particualry proud of cause im good at knowing where to throw it). Some of te weapons are skewed in their statistics, but at close range the AR takes down somebody awfully quick. If it worked like that at a distance of 10 meters, everybody would use the AR.

and u can just throw grendades in there direction and kill em.
If you throw a grenade at me from more than 10 meters away, I guaran-damn-tee you'll miss. Grenades aren't for far away combat. If you're any good, no one will get you by throwing grenades at your dot.

The motion tracker adds another level into the game. You can choose to ignore this level or not, but I think you'll find that the best Halo players use it effectively. This goes double for online games with crappy people playing. I can literally march right up to my enemy's base with my pistol and go on a killing spree. I do this by watching my motion tracker and knowing who's around me at all times. Then, when the coast is clear, I grab the flag, only to be killed by the shotgun camper who was watching his motion tracker. Turnabout is fair play.

For me, it varies. For games with only a few people and medium to large maps, I tend to leave the radar on since nobody wants to wander around for 10 minutes just trying to find a target. On larger games, the radar isn't as necessary (but it can still be used to keep the pace up).

In my opinion, the MOTION TRACKER (which is what is connected to most burglar alarms, you know those tiny little white boxes in the top corners of rooms that turn red when you move, so the year is 2552, 548 years in the future, so that box 2.5 by 5 cm is gonna be a coupla mm square, so MC is 7feet tall, the armour makes him 7.5feet tall, so those tiny little motion tracker are gonna give him a nice 360 degrees veiw. ok, realism covered, nw for the game aspect. I absolutely slaughter my friends by bashing them in their backs, its now a joke,at first i snuck up on them, now since i know they dont even bother with their MT, i just run all the time, exclaiming dont you use your mt??? it improves your playing and also substitutes the peeking over your shoulder and ehanced hearing, etc. Also, i think it improves everyone if its turned on, because if its a closed in map, ie longest, you have to learn to move slowly, and keep a teammate with you and a teammate guarding tha flag at all times. if you dont learn to sneak, youll get slaughtered on XBL by moi and me mates who have it. The sneakin also has a plus side on non radar game, because not only does it reduce your MT signature it makes you a smaller target, harder to see and gives that extra satisfaction when you drop down on top of your opponent and bash then right on their neck kiling them.
For those of you who say people just throw nades at the area of the red dot, youre wrong, becasue unless you just play on Blood Gulch, theres almost always more levels above and blow you, making for a quite terrifying game which gets the adrenaline pumping.
