The most popular number for the amount of halos is 13 found by Hedwig

Dimensions of the Milky Way Galaxy:
100,000 ly diameter
300 ly thickness
16,000 ly bulge at the galactic center
A halos pulse reaches 25,000 ly in all directions

Placement of Halos:
1 at the galactic center for the bulge
4 on the x-axis 25,000 ly from the galactic center
8 on the x-axis near the edged of the galaxy
-------
13

Sounds correct hu? Well it is not guilty spark says "Technically, this installation's pulse has a maximum effective radius of twenty-five thousand light years. But, once the others follow suit, this galaxy will be quite devoid of life, or at least any life with sufficient biomass to sustain the flood." That means other Halos could have a larger pulse, it also means that even if a Halo fires it may not destroy all 25,000 ly it might only get about 10,000... whats my point? There may be alot more Halo games or we could be visiting a few more Halos with even greater power meaning a larger challenge?

PLEASE post replys or tell me that I am crazy

There are two groups of people in the world - those that hope, and those that wish. The first group hopes that nothing bad will happen. The second group wishes that they are there when it does. Which one are you?

Actually the minimum number of Halos needed to completely blanket the galaxy is 9, I posted that along with the Math and reasoning a long time ago, go look and you may find it.

P.S. good catch about the "other installations" abilities....and who says the other installations are Halos.

I think I remember that. That math, however, assumed no overlap. It was as if the Halo's fired their blasts in fixed cubes.

The problem with that is that the Halos blast fits a spherical area making such math that much more difficult.

Nope, my math assumed spheres. And the number 9 is made possible only because of the overlap. But I am very intrigued by the fact that the other facilities may have different abilities...and my not even be Halo's as we know them.

I have to disagree. He is using my theory of 13, which I mapped out. To completely cover the galaxy with Halo using a radius of 25,000ly it takes 13.

That is Hedwig's calculations that you posted up there.

And Nelo Angelo I double checked the math with the 25,000 ly radius thing and yeah it is 13 Halos, not 9. 13 to effectively wipe the galaxy clean with having a Halo every 25,000 light years...which makes sense to have that kind of security. Think about it, with a threat like the Flood, would you risk anything?

So there can be no real number found by using mathmatical equasions since every Halo may fire a diffrent sized blast, also will the other Halos fire at there max since one Halo has been destroyed? I mean my bros mustang goes rilly fast but he doesn't have to go that fast unless he needs to.

100,000 Light years in diameter is widely accepted to be an accurate measurement of the galaxy.

Astronomers can map it from Earth with very little ease. it has been done many times now with our own galaxy. You just have to measure light and distance, which is no problem these days.

All this math stuff is hurting my head. i personally think there are 7 installations, since 7 is Bungie's favorite number

People, the RADIUS is 25,000 light years, not the Diameter....the Blast DIAMETER would be a 50,000 light year sphere

We really don't how many dimensions there are exactly because we haven't search through the entire universe and each day the universe changes meaning it can expand changing the dimensions. So what they are basing it on is just speculation.

wouldn't the forrunners plan for the galaxy to expand?

Oh good god. Here are some things to help people understand how to figure this out. A galaxy is not the same as the Universe. Our galaxy is quite finite and has been measured quite accurately to be about 100,000 light years in diameter. In fact, now that I am going back over this stuff, I think you might be able to cover everything in 8 Halo-type installations...assuming all of them are uniform in design and ability.

What if it is not a spherical discharge? What if it's a trailing edge type of discharge? Like a ripple? Then how many installations? Remember it is Installation 004 in the game. What if there are 100, or 999?

And I love the way you put About, and Accurately into the same sentence.

I am specifically talking about the galaxy. The same as GS 343.

I am trying to prove there is no way to prove threw math how many Halos there are since they may all effect a smaller or larger area. One may destroy 10,000 ly another may destroy 50,000.
