Well Enough Alone...

~"The people who play Bungie games tend to sense that there's something behind the games that's attractive to them. Then they become fans of the games. And then they become rabid fans. And then they become employees of Bungie."(Life story) -Marty

Are these things free? Cheep? Can your pc be over 7 years old? How do you find games once you're online? How many people will you find online? Is ther much cheeting? Someone help me and message me the answers!

XBC is free, as far as I know your computer can be over 7 years old, and there is virtually no cheating at all. To answer the rest of your questions just go to http://www.xbconnect.com or http://www.xbconnect.com/help

There should be a list of setups on http://www.xbconnect.com/help, just look around on there, it will answer you question.

As for not connecting to the gamespy channel or whatever, check your firewall to make sure it's disabled. If all else fails, reinstall everything and if that doesn't work, try something else like xbc.

I hear about how awesome Halo:CE is on Halo 2&3 all the time, but everytime I check XBC, there's maybe 3 games up, max, none of them having more than 4 players..Geez I have no way of playing Multiplayer on there, it kinda sucks since I really like the gameplay of it, a re-released version with Live enabled would be nice.

Halo out of the box has no online mode. However, some very clever people (I know, surprising to find them at GameSpy) figured out how to trick an Xbox into thinking that it’s on a LAN when in fact it’s over an Internet. These programs are called “tunnel programs” (as they use your PC to “tunnel” information from one Xbox to the other), and there are three to choose from. Also be aware that PAL and NTSC gamers will not be able to play with one another.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR THE TUNNEL PROGRAMS?
You need a PC with a NIC (Ethernet card). This is essential, as the program is installed on your computer (there is also a Mac option at http://postpose.com/aquaduct, although this won’t be covered here). You will also need some Ethernet cable – whether you need a patch cable or cross-over cable depends on the type of network that you will be setting up (generally speaking, you’ll need a patch cable if you are using a router/switch/hub, and a cross-over cable if you are connecting directly to your computer). You will also need a broadband connection for most of the programs. What you won’t need, however, is an Xbox Live subscription.

SETTING UP
First, you’ll actually need to set up the network. Essentially, your PC, modem and Xbox all need to be on one network. All of the programs give you comprehensive instructions. The best by far is at http://www.xbconnect.com/xbchelp/network/. Bear in mind that you may or may not be able to use your existing Xbox Live setup.

GAMESPY TUNNEL
The original, although not necessarily the best, tunnel program is the one created by GameSpy. It can be downloaded from http://www.gamespyarcade.com, and requires a copy of GameSpy Arcade to be installed also. This program is really for American NTSC gamers, and you’re almost guaranteed to find a game if you are one.

XLINK KAI: EVOLUTION VII
Available from http://www.teamxlink.co.uk, this is the new kid on the block. Because of this, it isn’t very popular. However, don’t let that put you off. This could turn out to be one of the best options for online gaming, as it features auto-updating, an integrated instant messenger and private rooms. It is also the only option that is completely free, as well as the only option that specifically supports 56K modems, although, as with the others, broadband is highly recommended.

XBCONNECT
The most popular tunnel program currently available, it can be downloaded from http://www.xbconnect.com. With a good mixture of functionality and popularity, this is a good choice for your Halo gaming needs. You won’t need to wait long to find a game, and it informs you of any upcoming tournaments. If you are just getting into playing Halo online, this is the one that you’ll want.

WHICH GAMES CAN I PLAY ONLINE?
As well as Halo, any System Link game will be available to play online. However, most of these programs offer specific rooms for each game, so you may need to wait until they update their list.

ANYTHING ELSE?
Lag can be a huge problem. You’re bound to be irritated by a lot of errors resulting from a poor connection on the host’s side, and you’ll also experience intermittent periods of frozen action, with your character impossible to control. If you are hosting, you probably won’t experience this. You may also experience complete idiots, which is normal for any online game. But all this hassle is worth a 16-player game of CTF on Sidewinder.
However, if you’re thinking of this as a replacement to Xbox Live, think again. You will be able to use your Communicator, but only with games that support it anyway. That’s a no for Halo then. The friends list in each program is also woeful compared to Live’s, and all that hot Live action from Halo 2 will be lacking from these tunnel programs. But they’re definitely good for games that don’t already have an online mode.

I'm a dude playing a dude desguised as another dude. I hate heritics, non-logical thoughts and people who are better than I am. People tell me that they like a lot of games, but I hate them all. Whenever I play a video game, I always go crawling back to Halo 3. Never go full retard!

Wow, I never knew that!

I was a huge original Halo player years ago before halo2 came out, when we played on XBC there were hundreds of people playing every day, but last time I checked like a year ago it took me almost an hour to find a decent host, and all we could do was 1v1. Have things changed at all recently? Me and my friends have been reduced to hosting a weekly lan party but its just not enough halo. If it has become popular could someone let me know... Are there quality hosts with solid gametypes? Are there enough players to at least get a 2v2 game? Does anyone with any real Halo skill still play on xbc? If it is worth it I will download it again and bring out the old routers and ethernets... maybe even bypass this Halo3 crap. Wow, halo combat evolved was by far the best fps game ever, its too bad bungie lost sight of what made it so good, poor guys...

Are there any more people that play on xlink than XBC? I have been playing Halo on XBC since 2002, I can't believe some of you people are just now hearing about it. Back there were hundreds of local hosts, but since Halo 2 came out everyone abandoned it. The best time to play on XBC is around midnight on friday and saturday night, thats when it really peaks.

It would be nice if anyone played halo on XBC, Xlink or gamespy tunnel, because no one is on in any of them.
