I was just curious. Has anyone actually seen a set number stated by bungie? I know some people think it will be 16 however there have been some articles (not made by bungie) that have hinted at more than that (the article said 64 but I can safely say its not 64). If you go to the home page and then click on halo 2 , under "current projects" then towards the top there is a picture of what appears to be master chief in the middle of New Mombasa. on it there is a link called "About". if you click on it it takes you to a little page all about Halo 2 stuff. Next to the words "# of players" it still says To Be Determined. What do you guys think it will be? (I heard that in some nascar game they had 32!)

there isnt enough memory in the xbox to run more than 16... 20-24 could be considered, but not with Halo 2's graphics...

ya and how tricked out halo 2 will be in the graphics and such i dunno if the xbox could handle 32. I remember in H1 even with 16 there was lag in network games and H1 will have suxier graphics compared to halo 2

I think you should be able to play with 64 people over LAN and 16 over live.

I can almost guarantee you it will be 16. That is what the maps are designed for, and about all Xbox Live can contain without serious lag. Think of 64 people running around Zanzibar... You would blow up before being able to launch even a grenade.

Actually, halo 2 will be using live 3.0, and it has a compression enabler that will make for faster connection ratios, so more than 16 may be possible, don't rule it out just yet.

I do not see why 32 would be an impossible number. See, even though Halo 2's graphics are intense, that doesn't matter to the internet; it only relays your position, so if your character was made out of 2 polygons or 500, I don't see how it would be impossible. However, the more players you have, the lower the lowest ping rate(LpR) will be. With fewer players, the LpR has a better chance of being higher, so Bungie might limit players to 16 for that reason.

I think it will be possible to have 32 players. Hell, almost all the game is bump mapped (just as good graphics, but less information being used, so less lag. I'm pretty sure you all know what it is) but, they've been working on Halo2's multiplayer for a long time, and the maps are huge! (enough I bet to fit 32) Besides, Bungies been working on mostly on tweaking and the servers. I find it a possibility for 32, but I still think it will be most likely 16, otherwise they probably would have said something by now. (right bungie? RIGHT! If I'm wrong, TELL US NOW!) lol
