SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

In response to Bawb: Because I dislike asinine responses. In particular "LOL" or "LMAO" or any such drivel. Also, I can't simply post "moron" and lock a topic without facing some form of punishment anymore...

Which of course is not to say that I'd post that here. EDOET, despite the obvious denotation in his name, is not a moron.

Could be the beta forum...

The BETA was created after the Halo 3 forum. If the Halo 3 forum ID number is in the hundreds of thousands, and since the numbers ascend as more forums are created (which includes private chapters) the BETA forum would be in the hundreds of thousands as well. I doubt anyone was even thinking of creating a beta forum when the 11th forum was created, as there had yet to even be a Halo 2 much less a Halo 3 BETA.

HALO 2 FOREVER - M.I.A.

Yes i have a Twitter and yes i voice my opinion.

I remembered the forum from back in halo 2 and it was a single HALO forum for all of halo and halo 2 stuff. my old link to it comes up to the same web address.

Is there any good chance that forum number 11 is possibly the no-longer Zanzibar forum that I have once heard of a long time ago?

Do you think we could quietly make a secret forum and tell just the "good" people to go there? That'd be nice.

See, if I asked that (even as a joke like that I'd bet), I'd be told, 'That's why we have private groups'. Since you asked though...
...Actually that'd be funny. A public private forum. anyone can view, but some could post? 'Elitism' maybe, but funny as heck, even for people like me who probably wouldn't get in.

...
-.-

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I believe many years ago, someone made a thread with the idea, of a secret forum for the good members of bungie.

If I recall the word elitism was tossed about alot and the idea died, or came to life and i wasn't invited.

It has been discussed off and on for years now, you're right. I personally have no problem with "Elitism." We already have it in some ways. Only an elite group of people have Recon armor, for example. Some of us have colored text, others do not. Some people have special fancy titles, others do not.

Private groups could certainly fill this need but with the current implementation, they just aren't discoverable enough.

I still think we'll find a way to continue to build on the titles you have on your name now, cross reference that with a persons history for behavior and contributions and their online reputation and create tiers of members where we can segregate like minded community members into appropriate groups.

Don't take this the wrong way.

But that's a horrendous idea.

Cough cough

Like the Mythic members group?

Just an example of self segregation, no hatred intended.

You know what a cool thing you could do with Private Groups is? you could modify the user's color of text. For instance, say i'm the admin instead of my text being plain white I could change it to purple or green or even pink, and the mods of the group could have orange and the members left with plain boring ole' white.

To each his own. I disagree. And I think people would welcome an opportunity to engage in discussions with other like-minded fans without having a few thousand jerks raining on the parade. Let the bad kids hang with the bad kids, let the good people hang with the good people. Since we dont let users 'mute' other people's posts, we need to find ways to build those barriers for you.

And if anything, this wouldn't be site wide, there would be still be plenty of overcrowded common forums full of people talking over each other and fighting with one another.

These new 'titles' hopefully will not be ban influenced like the current ones are, I hope, since you stated that these would be built on contributions to the community, unlike the current one which bases it on how much time you have not spent in banadu or how long you have been on the website.

Not to connect the two, but it'd be sort of like Recon for the forums?
By that, I'm trying to say you can have the ability to get in by being good, but you can also be booted?

And you know one thing I like about this odd idea? Since you don't have to be as worried about people shooting you down so hard, maybe people could actually post more ideas and all. Just a thought.

It's not like a forum would be deleted if this 'update' occured, right?

As for 'building on titles'...like a little mark to determine if you can do something such as post in this hypothetical forum?
One thing I like about this is if you could let anyone view it, but only some people post. That would allow content to be seen not so little as in private groups, but...well, hopefully more thought out responses and thoughts.

I wonder what Achronos's thoughts on this are as well, since he's the guy who decides everything I believe.

This is nowhere near being a reality right now. If and when we ever get to do something like this, it's going to be complicated and require a fair amount of work for ole Achronos. These titles right now aren't really an indicator of any special access or the like. As far as I know, they are what was once going to evolve into a full fledged user 'rating' system on the site but that feature isn't something that's being worked on right now. The priority focus has been enhancing Halo 3 support with the file share updates and the upcoming video rendering feature.

What about people who are new to bungie.net?
Or users that once had a higher ranked title, but were banned for something small, and now have a lower ranked title? Are they considered "bad kids"?

Why do they need building? We're already more than capable of doing it ourselves thank you very much. Whether it be through simply ignoring the noise, moving to a group, or going even further and shifting off site. If you end up erecting artificial barriers on b.net, whatever theyre designed to protect will fail. Whatever could be discussed there could be discussed in public with greater input (bear in mind the type of people you're talking about have all been here years and are more than capable of dealing with idiocy), or in private groups with people whose company you actually enjoy, rather than the set of people who match the arbitrary rules.

Rather, I'd like ways for those "valued" users to be able to set themselves apart and build an identity through entirely inconsequential features. The beginnings of such a system are there with the titles, but things like (limited?) custom avatars and titles would provide much more of an incentive to maintain an identity than there is on the site now.

It would be nice if it were to become a reality soon, but as you said, the game does come first. I do hope that 'buTube' will be up and running before H3O comes out, I cannot wait for it. :)

And would this rating system be anything like the RT forum or Youtube comment ratings, or just something else a normal bungie.net user would not know?

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I don't see why we would need a super secret public forum (my oxymoron detector went off the charts on that one) when we have a plethora of private groups which neatly and succinctly fulfills that niche and more. If not for pragmatic reasons, than at least for the idiomatic pseudo-moniker violating any sense of intellectual honesty I have left.

Yeah lets not get spun up on this. Nothing is happening in the foreseeable future.

And this really wouldn't be for the hardcore respectable fans who already have private groups. You know your way around and you've already solved for the grander problems of our site. However, there are a lot of good people out there who just don't know. Who don't get invited to your private group. Who want to talk to people and make friends online but don't know how or where to start. Perhaps what we're talking about is the forum equivalent to the Training Ground playlist - something at the entry level to give people a safe haven and then let it sort out and they end up where they end up.

This forum is mostly an exception. Try wading into the Halo 3 forum and starting up any intelligent discussion and you'll see that it quickly goes down the toilet. As a result, people have splintered off into groups or other websites entirely but there are still a lot of good people who stumble into the mess and have a horrible experience.

When and if we can re-address this internally and start having real feature discussions, we'll definitely seek input from our regular members. For now though, this was all just speculative and I don't want to start an outpouring of support or disagreement.

  • 12.04.2008 6:43 PM PDT

Sorry, this not a big deal... but this is just buggin me a little because I love the Halo 3 forum, my main one:
Try wading into the Halo 3 forum and starting up any intelligent a and you'll see that it quickly goes down the toilet.
I would like to point out that I have actually had very good, intelligent, not flame filled debate in the Halo 3 forum semi-recently, and I can name it.

...Just saying...hope is not lost. There are some smart and good people in that forum. I love it when I meet those people in the forums.

If something like this forum idea was implemented ever, I hope all the forums are looked at for people, no matter their reputation.

Good to hear Burrito.. don't worry, I haven't lost hope. I enjoy coming across great people, I just wish it was easier for them to find each other. We'll get there.

I'd be happy to do a front page story for newer members and highlight some great groups they could consider joining if anyone wanted to open their floodgates and expand their membership.
