Yep, mine does this too. I have deleted everything and all it does is download the update again and then won't connect. The only thing I can think of is when it worked before, my subscription was going through my credit card. I received a 12 month prepaid subscription and added it to my account and Halo 2 no longer works. I wonder if it is because my gold subscription is a prepaid. How many of you who are having problems are on a prepaid subscription?
Boy, this seems to be the only unsolvable problem.

Prepaid or not, when you boot the 360, the first tab on the right should indicate whether you are signed-in and whether or not you have 'Xbox Live Gold'.

If you are indeed signed-in with a Gold account gamertag, when you load H2 it must say 'disconnected from Xbox Live', right? Then it asks if you want the update and when you receive the update it still says you are not connected, right?

Note: If you do have any Map Packs, delete them all before you try the following suggestion.

Try this - Run 'Maintenance' (clear the cache) one more time. Boot the 360 (no disc). After the 360 is booted and it says you are 'Gold' and signed-in, unplug your modem and wait 30 secs and plug it back in and wait 2 mins for it to reset. Then unplug your router (if you have one) for 30 secs and then plug it back in and wait 2 mins. Now reboot your computer (not the 360). Then reboot the 360.

Now try to sign-in again to see if the update recognizes your gamertag.

Edit: the reason I'm saying all this is because a week ago I let my account run out. A few days later (payday) I bought my account again (same GT). All was fine until I tried to play H2. It said I was disconnected but I knew I was not. So I cleared the cache and tried again. The update loaded and it said they could not connect. Up came the troubleshoot thing again and I was pissed. Then I noticed the troubleshoot had a suggestion of unplugging my modem and then plugging it back in.

I thought it was a lame suggestion but I did it anyway. As soon as I cleared the cache again and tried the update, I was back online.

Cant Wait Until Halo Reach Beta
http://Suddoth.net

I fixed The Problem EVEN BEFORE Microsoft did..........

IF your account isn't working its because it was once a silver account RIGHT?

well BUNGIE STILL thinks that your account is silver so you have to do ONE OF TWO THINGS.......

I changed my gamertag.......and went to account management

i clicked my subscription

then clicked redem code

I added a PREPAID 1 MONTH XBL CODE

then my membership changed from 3month subscription to 1 month and added 1 month to my date of ending

THIS SHOULD SOLVE your PROBLEM if you tried all other STEPS and really want to play H2

So basically the only way to solve it is to create an entirely new gamertag?also, besides changing my name, i actually did add a on month,(and a 12 month) AFTER my halo 2 stopped working. so i really dont know,

Ive did every possible scenario where i signed in before launching halo 2, signed in but disconnected, none signed in.

Connected my 360 straight to the modem
connected with and without opendns
portforwarded it
i must have did a system maintance about 50 times
i used other games to do the bc update

And unreal championship 2 liandri conflict and i think one other of xbox games CAN connect to xbl, but others like rainbow six 3, and halo 2 dont.

Someone at bungie should figure out a way to make a switch to be flipped so we can get back on or something. their working on odst atm, i know, but there should be at least ONE person who has looked into this?

Yeah, after the update, it somehow says I'm signed out, and takes me to the troubleshooter page, everything passes, and so on. My upstairs 360 will play it fine though. It doesn't even have the router ports open on that one.
I wish I could play on my downstairs one, since it's a 19"crt with my gaming headphones and the upstairs is a 35" old tv, with regular sound from the tv. :(

UPDATE: (yes it's bumping, but it it helped me)

After reading many threads about this, here is what I did:

I went and downloaded the 2007 game support file here:
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardscompatibility.htm#li veupdate
I created a data disc using NERO, but whatever you use to burn a data disc should be fine.

I cleared my cache on my 360 hard drive, and then ran the disc.

Here are some of the other things that I did that may help too.
I signed out of xbox live before loading Halo 2.
I did not ask me to do the game software update, but it already showed version 1.5.
I then signed into my halo 2 profile, and then signed into a 1 month account that I created for my brother in law that started around xmas time. I don't know if this will work for anyone else, but at least it's letting me download the maps now.
I also have all the family things and other rating allowed for all.

I hope this helps!

I don't mean to sound ungrateful for the help, but I already had that link posted in step 2 of my original post.

wen i try 2 get on halo 2, i have 2 download all of the new maps and everything, but wen i do, it always say, the downloaded content has been damaged, so i do it again, and it keeps saying the same thing

Here is my story... I just got my 360 elite a month ago, ive had an xbox live account for at least 2 years now i think. For those two years i have had live for 5 months and 10 days, which include 1 - 3month prepaid code 2 - 1months prepaid codes and around 10 - 48 hours, when i had my last 1 month activated i played halo 2 no problem at my friends house, but now i can't play at my house on my new elite. i have a 1month atm and will expire soon, as soon as it does i will put on a 12 month code and will test out if it works then if it doesn't then iono what to do cause i really want to play halo 2 on live :(

I meant to thank the person who shared the microsoft link information, but it was late, and I wanted to bump your thread. (I wouldn't be shady and make my own thread using the info you shared without giving you kudos).
I appreciate it, and hopefully it works. So far so good.
I'm downloading the maps now, and will try to play tonight. :)

I created a one month trial as well, and it works flawlessly, but my main account says there is no xbox live. i got the maps and downloads, but my main still wont work. Ive checked my family setting and i cant seem to enter the part where it'll let me select if i can play xbox1 games online, which I'm assuming may be a cause.

It has to be on Microsoft's end, cause even my other games act the same way, so it cant be on bungie's end.

This started happening 2 or so months before nxe came out. Earlier on in the year, Microsoft charged my moms credit card without our knowledge and it was declined of course, cause there was no money in there, and i couldn't do anything about it, so i decided to let it go back to silver.

Of course, it didn't go back to silver, it was suspended for a good 6 or so months, then it suddenly came back one day(prob cause of all the understandable fuss i made about me getting suspended for something that was Their fault) , I used a 12+1 month card, then another 1 month i got from xbox repair, later tried to play my old xbox games and it wont let me. i believe i was able to play xbox 1 games after i entered the 12+1 but not after the 1 month for some reason.

I don't think the orig xbox understands more then one card on a profile at a time. But i know it has got to be on somebody's end, cause if a newly created 1 month trial works flawlessly, and a paid subscriber like me(have been for a good 3-4 years, had this gamertag before xbox 360 even came out, and another gamertag even before that[global marusame])then why wont mine work?

Bumpzors, just because.

Adding either a one three month or 12 month card have confirmed to solve this problem, while support is still looking into this issue.

I can play on live but all my maps (including the map packs with relic on it which i had on a disk then sold it) have been "corrupted" as my xbox says. Please help and sorry if this was the wrong fourm.

  • 02.10.2009 5:32 PM PDT

Try erasing all the maps you have for the game, put the game in, then redownload them all again. I got all the maps for the game without having another disc besides the one for the game.

I purchased Halo 2 three months ago and have never been able to play online and do not have any of the maps. Whenever I try to sign in to play Halo 2 online it tells me I have "an important message from Xbox live", takes me to a troubleshooting page and then restarts Halo 2. What can I do to play Halo 2 online?

I got Halo 2 to finally work and downloaded all of the maps. The way I fixed it was removing the hard drive and then putting it back in after turning on the Xbox 360.

You know, I've heard of this tactic working once before. It doesn't always work but it's worth it for people to try.

Mine miraculously fixed itself I took it to my brother in laws then when i got home today and tried just for the hell of it all of a sudden it worked. All my xbox games WORK now!

The other day i was looking at this topic about this and someone said they fixed it by turning on the 360 without a hdd. heres what i did.

While the 360 is off and was turned off last with a Hdd in it.
Remove the Hdd
Turn on the 360(all my profiles were on the hdd btw) i scrolled around for about a minute.
Turned the 360 off, then put the Hdd back on Then turned it on again.
I tried halo 2, and it went online!

one of three things may have happened, either my profile was fixed already before i did this trick, i fixed it by this method, or my xbox live 1 month got used and when it went to my 13 month one it worked.

but im guessing its the hdd that fixed it.

Thanks donkeyman

I think the issue may have been resolved by Microsoft as I didn't do anything except try again to sign in playing halo 2 and all of a sudden it worked.

d[(••)]T Keepin it clean...

Live an ethical life and come face-to-face with the fundamentally flawed nature of human beings and look on the gap between high ideal and low achievement with wry amusement, only then will you have fun playing Halo 3, even against Generals who hump your corpse and beat you with a 30 point deficit.

The only problem I have is simply this.

It wont play Halo 1, Halo 2 OR Halo 3.

It wont load even the Halo 2 stock maps (i've redownloaded EVERYTHING twice, maybe three to 4 times around) and ity wont even load MP at all. SO I don't know where that is going.

My Halo 3 disc plays for exactly 7 minutes, then gets a Disc read error (irony?) and it wont allow me to play custom games either.

My conclusion is that my xbox actually has personality and denies Halo.
