When I boot up Halo 2 (having cleared the cache and all game data), I get a message saying that there's an update available (currently the original xbox logo is displayed).
It says if I don't accept, I'll be signed out of Xbox LIVE, so I accept. It loads a 360esque menu and downloads an update, then restarts Halo 2, which proceeds to load normally.
I sign into the Default Halo 2 profile, and then it loads my Xbox LIVE profiles, I select my account.
It says:
UPDATE REQUIRED
There is a new update from the Xbox Live service which you'll need for Xbox Live. Would you like to get it now?
Get Update
Continue Offline
I obviously select Get Update, and after this my screen just goes black.
I've tried everything from transferring all my content to a USB drive, formatting the HDD, clearing the cache, and trying again, still to no avail. I was on the line with Microsoft for 3 hours and their final verdict was that my disc was damaged, so I just got a disc that's practically brand new, and I still have the same problem.
I tried adjusting the resolution, as I saw that fixed someone else's similar issue, but it didn't work.
My Xbox is not frozen, the screen is just black. I can't do anything, but if I press the guide button I hear it open. After that nothing registers and I have to open the tray to go back to the dashboard.
I suspect it's my Xbox, but I really don't want to find a way to swap Xbox's with someone for the next few days while the game is running.
Any suggestions?
On a side note:
I have the Multiplay Map Pack disc, and I've tried installing its update and maps from there, but it only updates to version 1.1, and I can see this in the main menu of Halo 2. However, I've only installed the update currently, and when I check it in memory, it shows the Halo 2 symbol that should be there, but it says Unknown Game, might this be a problem? Halo 2 seems to recognize it just fine, so I doubt it.
EDIT:
I just found a site that has compatibility issues listed for H2, and apparently when it tries to run the in-game updater, it reverts to PAL-50, which the HD VGA cable doesn't support (and is what I'm using). Thus, if I just borrowed a friends monitor and did the update, hopefully it would work just fine. I'll have to give this a shot.
EDIT2:
Just tried it out on an HDMI monitor with no luck. I had it hooked up to a TV earlier with the RCA cables but the ports in the room had been disabled by the IT department here, such a long day.
Something that might work would be to download all the maps from the content download section of the game, but first get rid of the saved ones from the multiplayer disc. The game for some reason will not updated past 1.1 if you use the maps from the disc, it has something to do with the last update for the game from when Desolation and Tombstone came out.
Sounds like a laundry list of problems, but at the same time you seem to have everything set right. I wish I could be more help but it looks like you are gonna have to give Microsoft support a call to figure this one out.
