Are you getting some sort of message or something that says why you can't sign into live? Most of the time if you clear all of your Halo 2 stuff from your hard drive, clear the cache, then redownload everything, it works. The other thing you can try if you can get online with other games, but not Halo 2 is adding a one month to your account. For some reason this sometimes fixes connection issues with Halo 2. If all else fails you can always call Microsoft support.

The statement below is false.
The statement above is true.

I got a way different message. It said that "One or more accounts on this console have been permanently suspended from matchmaking"...

I don't get it. I created this GT on a brand new console..
And I just now re-bought Halo 2, but to my avail, I got banned on a gamertag and console that has never even played H2.

They may have banned your IP address from matchmaking. If thats the case you need to pay to get a new one or get a new ISP. You should be able to call xbox support and find out whats going on.

I don't see why they would. I just got a new ISP last week.

Huh that is strange, the only other reason I could see them banning you like that is if you had modded content on your console. Any time you connect to live to play a game the system supposedly scans your console and hard drive for mods of any kind, if it finds any it bans the GT, console, and IP from playing on live.

I think that if you don't have anything modded on your box you should call support and try and figure out why you were banned/can't play.

Yeah I also just bought this console. Very strange.

This is the average H2 Fanboy.
Xfire: JacobGRocks.
50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

This vid shows you how to change an IP:

And also, someone could have been using hacks on the console or IP. Also, what system are you on, original or 360?

Okay, so I just made a new tag, and it says "Couldn't connect to Xbox Live" -_-

Your best bet is gonna be to call xbox support and tell them whats going on. They will be able to tell you if anything strange has been going on with your connection.

Everyday: A game won = a dose of ownage. I usually overdose so becareful.

1 question. What should you do if you play matchmaking and only works 20 before a disconnection error pops up?

  • 10.18.2009 1:51 PM PDT

Are you clearing the cache on your hard drive before trying to redownload the maps? You have to delete everything from the hard drive not just the maps, everything that has to do with Halo 2. After everything is gone, clear the cache then try to redownload the stuff.

This to me seems like something that would have to do with your internet more than your console or game. Does this happen with any other game, or when you are on your computer?

The other thing that it could be is matchmaking trying to find a match for you that isn't the same people you just played with in the last game, if that is the case you may not be able to find a match because of the number of people online when you are online, or based on your connection speed. Yet another option is that you may be getting cheated by someone you play with, they may be flooding your IP address causing you to lag, lag out, or eventually lose your connection after a while.

Nice tutorial.

Thank you. It came because it had to. I got tired of seeing the repeat threads about people not being able to play Halo 2 online.

Also having problems connecting to Live with H2, I will try the family settings. One thing you can try is go to an original xbox or 360 with the same H2 disk and see if you get the same problem. If so then the disk is most likely no good (forgive me if this is already posted, didn't read through all the posts).

Now when I choose "optimatch" it provide the message " Sorry, We've failed to update some configuration files requred for matchmaking. Sign out of Xbox Live, then sign back in to fix this problem." I've done so a handfull of times and nothing.

wow this many hours and no announcement from Bungie about this matchmaking problem. Is this how they do business? So this is what happens when your fan base is large, you then can afford to have really poor service? sounds like the washington redskins

I had a friend that was having the same issue today, though he is able to play now without any problems. May have been some sort of system foul up somewhere. According to Bungie as of right now there are around 600 online in Halo 2 matchmaking.

If for some reason you still can't play, you can try deleting everything that is Halo 2 off your hard drive, maps, game saves, all of it. Then clear the cache on your console, and redownload and reinstall everything. Sometimes as you play files get corrupted for whatever reason and that would prevent you from being able to play.
