maybe that's the case where the files are corrupted, but in this case I don't think suddenly a lot of people have the same error message at the same time is due to file corruption unless due to external source and not local to the machine. Seriously though, bungie should just fess up about what happened.

Bungie may not know what happened, the problem could have been on Microsoft's end of things. I have also been hearing rumors throughout the night that the problem wasn't with just that game, there were people having similar problems on other games as well because of xbox live acting funny.

Bungie has stated that the issue is not with anything they maintain, the problems with the recent outage are on Microsoft's end of things.

If you are having trouble with Xbox Live on Halo 2, you should contact Microsoft support and open up a support ticket. The symptoms you describe seem to indicate a problem with Xbox Live matchmaking services, not anything Bungie maintains.

I can't seem to play H2 online. I get an error stating "W've failed to update some configuration files required for matchmaking." Anyone else getting this error?

mine is doing the same thing. keeps saying "failed to update some configuration files"

There may still be a problem with matchmaking on Microsoft's end of things.

If you don't think there is a problem with the matchmaking system you can try deleting everything that is Halo 2 off you hard drive, then clear the cache, then redownload, and reinstall all updates, and maps.

Matchmaking works.

When you sign in, the first thing you need to do is look at your friends list. Wait for your rank to appear. Then go to optimatch. If your rank doesn't appear first try, sign out, try again.

It seems like whatever was causing intermittent problems with Halo 2 matchmaking has been fixed. Still no word on what it was though.

Probably a little tiny bug in the system that was causing it and they probably must likely fixed it or it could have fixed itself.

I'm having a problem with downloading the Killtacular map pack.

What kind of problem? What is not working as far as downloading it goes?

Generally I would advise you to delete everything that is Halo 2 off your console, clear the cache, then restart the download. Also remember that you download all of the stuff from the Halo 2 disc, not from the marketplace, and make sure your connection to xbox live is working alright.

I have deleted everything from my console, cleared my cache and even used a brand new account never used on Halo 2 and after signing into a default profile when I go to sign into XBL I am asked to do an update for my xbox console. I click Get Update instead of Continue Offline and it either takes me to a black screen forever or brings me to the message

"This original Xbox game has encountered a problem and can't continue. For more info, go to www.xbox.com/info"

I also just purchased a new xbox 360 and it still persists.

Because it is a new console it sounds like the problem is that you don't have the correct backwards compatibility software to run the game online since you need this software to update the game. I will refer you to step 2 on the list of things to try. It can explain it better than I can if you follow the link.

2. Do you have the backwards compatability software you need to play the game on your 360? Check here for more info.

I clear the cache on my console then reinsert the Halo 2 disc into my 360. It updates with the 360 update screen(gray box, white font) the bar fills and restarts the game disc. It loads Halo 2, I select the profile I want to use(symbol, controller settings) then select the gamertag(I have like 5, tried all of them). After I select the gamertag a message in the Halo 2 message screen font comes up, asking my to update my Xbox console. I go to update and it brings me to a black screen, or tells me it is unable to update my Xbox 360 console with the original xbox game. I can play other original Xbox games on Xbox Live fine, just not Halo 2 as of recently.

The problem may be that you have too many profiles on your 360. The original xbox only allowed 4 I think. Some people have had success if they get rid of profiles they aren't using on their console. At the same time it still sounds like a backwards compatibility issue to me, or it could be that you need to download all the maps again, or it could be that you are actually installing the game to your hard drive.

Here is the process I go through

Put in Halo 2 disc into xbox 360 with 6 profiles on the HDD
Xbox 360 asks to update, I allow the update before Halo 2 has even loaded up to the Bungie screen.
After update, Halo 2 loads all the way to the main menu, I select my profile for Halo 2, select what gamertag I want to play on and hit A
It asks me to update my Xbox console inorder to continue online(this update is in a blue box, basically it is Halo2 telling me to update) Everytime I do this update it either stays in a black screen or tells me it cannot continue to update.

Any help?

Sounds like you may need to get rid of a couple of profiles on your console. If I remember right this problem can be solved by having four or less profiles on your console.

If you don't wanna get rid of them you can also try clearing the cache on the hard drive. Don't forget to download all of the maps before trying to play also.

I'll try the profile thing, but I've already cleared my cache and tried it and the results were the same.

And I would have to be able to get past this update problem in order to even download the maps....so yeah.
