Nuclear Winter is the climatic condition that takes place (theoretically) after a planet-sized nuclear attack. Theoretically the debris and dush/ash/etc. that is airborne after such an attack would block out the sun and decrease the temperature on earth until all life is extinguished. Personally, I don't believe the theory, but whatever. Mt. St. Helens exerted the energy of an atomic bomb going off every second for several hours, almost a full day, and it only blocked out the sun for a relatively small portion of the Northwest. Not to mention that there is no reason to suggest that the debris wouldn't settle after a short amount of time. The scientists are assuming that the air currents would hold a significant amount of blockage in the atmosphere, but there's a problem with that theory. If the world's temperature truly centralized, then there would be no air currents. Ergo, no floating matter that blocks the sun. Again, whatever.... it's just a theory anyway.
