The Covenant from what I know consists of many separate races which make the body of the Covenant. This system is split up into casts, or rather a hierarchy system. The thought I’m considering in this little bit of speculation I will roll into a small concise ball. The Prophets are weak, frightened creatures which require the protection of the other Covenant races. Which in turn the Prophets have placed themselves in a position of power to make it look like they are serving a greater service.
The Brutes, Hunters, Elites, and Jackals appear to all be carnivores in the Halo universe. While the Prophets seem to be herbivores strictly by visually looking at their physical traits. The Brutes, Elites, and Jackals all have very sharp dagger like teeth. This may have been to clamp down on their pray when they use to live in their natural surroundings. The Jackals eyes are placed on the side of their skulls which might show they were not the primary carnivore where they lived. This assumption might also be true for the Elites, except their eye’s are not on side, but pointed off at angle slightly. The Grunts are hard to speculate on, it is not possible to see their teeth so no quick speculation is possible, this also goes for the Hunters.
The physical stature of the Covenant differs quite a bit. The Elites stand tall and are able to view a great distance due to being bipedal, what you need to look at on the Elites are the legs. The Elites legs are very muscular particularly the front quadriceps, this denotes that the Elites should be very good at sprinting short distances, or leaping high. This also means the Elites shouldn’t be very good at running long distances. The Jackals have a very light muscular build, with scaley looking skin, this should mean that the Jackals are unlikely creatures to live in a snowy winter environment. The Jackals small size would mean that they loose heat at a quick rate, this would also entail a high metabolism; which of course infers an active creature. Can you say nervous Jackals. The Brutes are very interesting indeed, they appear to have few teeth but the ones they have protrude a great deal. The sheer girth of the Brutes and impressively muscular appendages says a lot on their part. They Brutes could easily live in a cold environment, due to their size. But there are many factors which could cancel this out. We should note the Brutes eye’s face forwards which is a sure sign of binocular vision, this may indicate the possibility of them being carnivores. Brutes shouldn’t be able to run extremely fast, or run long distances. From the way we saw them attack the Master chief in the E3 2003 demo we know they’re very clever. The Brutes were using group tactics swiftly enough to give the Master Chief a little difficulty but nothing he’d sweat over. The Grunts are the one race which looks misplaced in the Covenant ranks. The Grunts are willing to fight in an atmosphere environment not suited for them, which means they have to carry around a heavy tank just incase they figure they may want to breath at some point. Notice how the grunts like to sleep a lot. The Grunts also have very long arms, and binocular vision. Who knows how fast a Grunt could be without one of those tanks. Oh yeah; Bungie does.
You’re probably wondering what exactly that has to do with the Prophets being afraid. The prophets seem to be herbivores when you look at there teeth; their necks are also sufficiently long enough that you might guess earlier in their history they may have once grazed on trees, or grass’s. The Prophets are also very lightly built, extremely fragile. If a predator came along which liked the taste of them, the Prophets wouldn’t be able to put up much physical resistance.
We know that the Prophets are the highest level in the Covenant ranks, and I think the engineers are next, which also turn out to be the same beings as the Prophets. The least dangerous race to the Prophets would most likely be the Grunts, which in turn are the lowest ranked. Why? Maybe due to the Grunts social behaviour, they may be smarter than we think they are. Oh yes I’m suggesting the Grunts are so low due to them being less of a threat. Who better to take a beating then the Grunts, the higher ranked Covenant won’t care for anyone else but themselves. You can most likely figure out the order of the rest of the Covenant race, and why it is that way.
How do the Prophets manage to keep everyone of the Covenant races inline, simple disinformation. It works for human governments so why not the Covenant, I will now prove the Covenant do not really have a governmentalized society like the humans do. We know that some how the Prophets managed to get control over the other Covenant races, but how? Simple the Prophets claim they’re in direct connection with the Forerunner who have told them to destroy humanity. Lets hope they aren’t, otherwise humanity will have a graver danger to face in Halo 2. We also know the Prophets have claimed to have lived on an original planet the Forerunners did inhabit at one time. But how did the Prophets manage to get all of those carnivorous races together without having their heads ripped off. I figure it is the old give the kid a candy for doing his chores then gradually ween them off the candy till they just do it instinctively. I figure the Prophets gave the lesser Covenant superior weapons to what they had, and told them God had selected them to rule the Universe. I mean who wouldn’t like to have a stranger come up and tell them god was on their side. Well I wouldn’t but lets not consider that.
Here’s why the Covenant do not have a conventional government in a democratic societies eyes. Only the race which is represented as Prophets and Engineers may have the honour of running the entire Covenant factions. If a Grunt, Jackal, or any other Covenant could hold this position and be voted in, then we might consider them to have a real government. I suppose it is a government, after all it is a body which leads their society.
We know that the Prophets are most likely not receiving word from the Forerunners as to what they’re suppose to do. The reason behind this is that Kinotrica ‘Mocka’ pointed out some text in one of the Halo books which clearly proves the Prophets only want the Forerunner technology Refer further to a post further down the page.
A person could assume that the Prophets do not want humans as part of the Covenant since they’re able to eat vegetables and meat. This would mean the human population could explode much faster then any other of the Covenant races which mainly appear to be Carnivores. The main reason which the dictatorial Prophets most likely despise the humans is in the way we run our society. The human government system allows any human to be the head of government, which would be a shocking revelation to the other lesser Covenant races which could possibly pull their entire society apart. Without a single weapon having been fired. What would happen if one of the other Covenant races learned of solid proof proving the Prophets were spreading nothing but lies. Can you imagined a shattered Covenant Regime. Sorry for not having put everything I could have in this, but I have to go grocery shopping Kinotrica ‘Mocka’, Glug, Arronyman, Brutalius, John 117, the Australians out there too. I’ll be back later this evening guys.
Expect something radical like this to occur in Halo 2, this game will most likely be won in a way you’re not expecting. After all Jason Jones did think the Halo 2 plot up.
