k so currently my 17'' (inch) monitor is at 1024x768 and i want to icreas ethe resolution for playing video games, *cough* Halo *cough*, anyways current LCD monitors the same size can run at 1280x1024, but when i went to "properties" and "settings" to increase the resolution, the option was not there, so i had to open up the console for my video card (FX5600 XT) and 1280x1024 was the highest resolution option, so i put it as that, and unlike previoius resolutions the screen looked almost the exact same as 1024x768, yet my screen was vibrating really quickly (the picture, not the monitor itself) that i could notice, and after not even a min. this started to hurt my eyes..i also figured out once u increase the resolution u also should increas the DPI (to make the icons, etc. a normal size) but how can i attain a good resolution without making my monitor go crazy, here's what i have:

it's a Dell E770 CRT monitor running at 32 bit. colour
512mb RAM
Pentium 4 1.4 GHz
150 GB hard drive
Nvidia FX 5600 XT 256mb

If your see a picture, your monitor should supposrt it. The flickering might be the refresh rate. 52 and 60khz make it flicker for me so make it higher. This will put more strain on your PC I think. You don't need to have it so high anyways. I play on 800x600 and the only difference between that and 1024x768 is the text and maybe a few straighter edges.

I play on 1024x768 and it works fine for me. Agreeing with Chewy (Gumball, not the wookie) here, its probably your refresh rate. If that doesn't work, Degauss your moniter (I actually do that for fun cause it makes pretty colors). If that doesn't work, just do without.

Only got 3 hrs of sleep last night,

Degaussing re-alignes the electron shooter. If you ever bring a magnet close to your monitor, you will see it get darker. If you degauss it undoes that. I degauss the comps at school cause they suck, prolly only 64mb of ram, and it takes a while to load. Its trippy.

ohh... he DID get it set to 1280x1024... read that wrong...
but yeah, if it slows down and flickers, it IS your refresh rate (when i had it at 60khz, it gave me a headache, b/c the picture was bouncing around so much). but anyway, what's wrong with 1024 by 768? that's pleanty pf pixels

also, ur vid cards not that good. and upgrade will help, but don't try to play at 1280x1024. Won't work with a bad vid card like that.

It'll work, just with extreme slowdowns.
