I'm asking this question because people say it over hyped, but when i ask OR talk about halo with people/friends/family/strangers they either: Don't Like It, Don't care for it, Says it O.K., or they somewhat like it. Ive never met anybody that likes it as much as me. (Other than on live, or the Interwebz)

Personally, i don't think its over-hyped, i just think it was a bit hyped when 2 and 3 came out, after that it was a well know, greatly awesome, game. And always will be.

UPDATE
i sorta meant The Hole Halo Trilogy.
i know that would meen wrong forum but whateva

Halo: CE was far from over-hyped. I never heard of it until a friend introduced it to me.

Halo 2 may have been "over-hyped" because Bungie talked about things, then cut them from the final game. Also the I Love Bees thing took it to a new level.

Halo 3 wasn't as hyped as Halo 2, IMO.

I just saw a green monkey nut shot a small tan lizard(?) in a gunny sack.

The first Halo was deserving of its recognition in every way. People still consider it to be the best in the Trilogy, over all of H2 and H3s improvements. So no.

Bungie Pentathlon - who actually cares ?

Spot on, Halo CE's having no hype benfitted the game in a way as people discovered it, for example Duardo was introduced to it by a friend and so was I, however the hype machine IMO set Halo 2 up for a fall as it was never going to live up to the "Earth will never bee the same again" magazine adverts etc and especially after the mighty E3 demo was scrapped.

Halo 3 was hyped in a more "fuller" way, in terms of it being more than just magazine ads and commercials for example the diorama, Landfall, Starry Night, Arms Race and of course the "behind the scenes" of the diorama, which was a clever ploy to give over the impression of a large Hollywood style production.

We also have the possibility of Halo 3 ODST falling down the same hole as Halo 2 and 3 as already we have had the teaser trailers, the endless magazine articles and the SI popping up over the place. Perhaps instead of taking step forwards using Halo 2 and 3's marketing they should perhaps take a step backwards and look at the low key Halo CE advertising, i.e: not a huge amount....only problem being is that Halo and Bungie are simply too big a brand to recreate the Halo CE feel of "just discovered"

But whatever Bungie did for Halo 2 and 3 was always going to be tarnished by the "im cool to put a negative spin on things" brigade and I am sure they will be out rattling their sabres in anticipation to put Halo ODST to the sword.

I think Halo 2 was over-hyped and never really lived up to it all. Halo CE was a great game and lived up to everything. I think Halo 3 wasn't to over-hyped.

What? I don't think I could go anywhere with out seeing advertising for Halo 3, Game Fuel, Commercials, cloths, it was everywhere.

It’s all cyclical...

I tend to agree here. CE wasn't over-hyped at all being the first in the series. halo 2 was by far the most hyped of all three. That said remember that with every passing year games (and everything in general) receives more coverage. For the time, Halo 2 was blown up big time. Halo 3 may have had a bit more exposure over all, but all big releases now adays are covered to the extreme.

I'm so over all of this.

Yeah, and also with the release being delayed .. what was it twice? Everyone I knew was waiting and waiting for it to release.

To play or not to play....

Halo CE was not hyped at all. I hardly even knew what it was when I purchased it. All I did was get the original Xbox when it was released. Halo CE was one of like five games or so that were released for the Xbox at the time. So I hardly had a choice. I also got Bloodwake at the time and well lets just say Halo was the better game :p.

Anyway Halo CE was all but unknown until people started playing it and loving it. Only then did people spread the word how good it was.

Halo 2 on the other hand was hyped, rehyped, overhyped and hyped again. I remember I could not go ANYWHERE without seeing it advertised. It was advertised in the movies, magazines, papers, bus stop posters, those large advertiser boards (next to roads) and I bet a dozen other places I forgot to mention. Heck I bet they even advertised it on milk cartons.

Halo 3 was a little hyped but I wouldn't say overly so.

Agree, halo 2 was awesome but didn't live up to it, and halo 3, i think did.

  • 12.24.2008 3:35 AM PDT

I really didn't see any hype for CE. But I hadn't actually seen any hype for any game before CE. And looking back at old gaming magazines, they all described Halo as "If it fills even 50% of its promises, it's going to be huge." It was hyped just as much as any game at that time.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

That is debatable, but Halo 2 was defintly overhyped with this and this.

"Insert generic signature here"

I had never heard of Halo until about three years ago when I saw a Halo 2 Championship on DIRECTV, before it, I did saw a Halo 2 but quickly forgot about it. In any case, Halo 3 was over-hyped because it was everywhere, game stores, Radioshacks, Best Buy stores, and even TV. But ultimately failed to deliver in many ways.

  • 12.24.2008 7:45 PM PDT

I would say that Halo 2 and Halo 3 were a bit over-hyped when they launched, but the first Halo was not. Its success was entirely due to the quality of the game, which is greater than the quality of its over-hyped successors.

Halo: CE just sort of appeared. There was no real hype at all.

Can you believe it?

Halo: CE was far from over hyped. Before I played it I didn't even know it existed.

I got it as a gift. I was thinking at the time, "What's this game? Probably some $5 one from Ebay, just smile and say thanks."

After I played it, that person got to many phone calls from me saying. "Thank you sooo much!"

I'd actually never even seen the full Halo 2 demo until now. Now that I've seen it, I wonder, how the -blam!- did they screw that up?!? SMGs weren't an ass-load of recoil, Battle Rifle wasn't just a 4-shot kill tool, Marines spoke like soldiers, things didn't take 50 years to blow up, i.e. Ghosts, my list goes on. but my disappointment is beside the, well, point.

I'm thinking that while Halo 2 was hyped, Halo 3 was hyped five fold.

Halo: Combat Evolved most of us did not even hear of until we played it at a friend's house or when it came with an X-Box.

Halo CE and Halo 3 are groundbreaking works and therefore not over hyped. If your product is the best in the genre, arguably on any system or any genre, you can be as hyped as you want.

Halo 2, imo, fell flat. I loved the multiplayer, but the campaign was a joke. Over-hyped and under performing
