HALO
THE HERITICS
CHAPTER 1
CAIRO STATION
The Chief saw at least ten marines clapping, celebrating, that the Chief had stopped Halo but he knew it was just the beginning. “You told me there wouldn’t be any cameras.” The Chief said, walking toward a door.
“And you told me you were going to wear something nice.” Johnson replied. “Folks need heroes, Chief. To give’em hope. So smile, would ya? While we still got something to smile about.” The door opened leading to the cockpit of the ship. Again there were marines clapping, this time a lot more. The Chief and Johnson walked toward Lord Hood. “Gentlemen. We’re lucky to have you back.” Hood said. One the pilots whispered something in his ear. “Go ahead, Cortana.” Lord Hood said. Cortana’s image flickered on the pedestal. “Another whisper, sir. Near Io. We have probes en route.” Cortana said. “I apologize, but we’re going to have to make this quick.” Hood said. Cortana turned to the Chief and Johnson. “You look nice.” Cortana said. “Thank you.” Both of them replied, turning to face each other. “Sergeant major…the colonial cross is awarded for acts of singular daring and devotion. For a soldier of the United Earth Space Corps. A person named Miranda Keyes walked toward Lord Hood as he said the name Commander Miranda Keyes. “Your father’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service. His bravery in the face of impossible odds reflects great credit upon himself and the UNSC. The Navy has lost one of its best.” Lord Hood said to Miranda Keyes. A siren sounded.
“Slip-space ruptures. Directly off our battle cluster.” Cortana said. “Show me.” Lord Hood replied. The huge screen showed Covenant ships coming toward the humans’ ship. “Fifteen Covenant capital-ships, holding position just outside the kill-zone.” Cortana said. “This is Fleet Admiral Harper, we are engaging the enemy!” A voice said through the radio. “Negative, Admiral. Form a defensive perimeter around the cluster.” Lord Hood replied. “Commander Miranda Keyes, get to your ship, link up with the fleet.” “Something’s not right…the fleet that destroyed Reach was fifty times this size.” “Sir, additional contacts! Boarding-craft! And lots of them!” A navigator said. “There going to try and take our MAC-guns offline…give their capital-ships a straight shot at Earth.” Lord Hood said. “Master Chief, defend this station!” “Yes, sir.” The Chief replied, as he turned to Sergeant Johnson. “I need a weapon.” “Right this way” Johnson replied, leading him to the armory. The Chief grabbed an SMG and a Battle Rifle on his way through the armory. The Chief reached a door. “Stand by…there latched. Check your targets, watch the crossfire. There in standard formation, little guys up front, big ones in back. Good luck Cairo.” A person on a different station said. “Be ready to fire on that bulkhead. As soon as it opens let’em have it.” Johnson said. The Spartan ducked near the turret that Johnson had set down. The Covenant were almost in. In a couple seconds the door blew up revealing four grunts and one elite. The Chief used his Battle Rifle to take down the elite then he switched to his SMG to clean up the grunts. A couple more elites and grunts charged through the door and with the help of the marines the Chief killed the last of them. The Chief was just about to go through the door when two elites dropped down from above. The Chief took down both of the elites’ shields and decided to melee both of the elites. He went through the door and took down two grunts that were being distracted by something. After taking down the remaining enemies he found out that the grunts were distracted by; a human. “Thanks.” The Chief said to the marine. “No problem.” The Chief went up two stairs. He walked through two doors, saw a turret and decided to rain down bullets from above to help the marines that were standing behind a barricade. Once he killed all the enemies he could get to on the ledge he dropped down and saw a few more grunts and elites to his right. A shimmering light from a plasma rifle sizzled past his helmet. The Chief grabbed his Battle Rifle off his back and shot down one elite and one grunt. A couple bolts of plasma hit him in the chest. An alarm went off in his armor signaling his shields had depleted. The Chief dove into cover and waited for his shields to recharge. Then he shot down the remaining enemies. The Chief continued down the hall killing all the grunts and elites he could find. He went to the end of the hall and saw enemies to his left. He killed all the grunts and went up the stairs. He walked onto a ramp and saw two marines, one on a turret and the other with a Battle Rifle, fighting off waves of Covenant troops. The Chief grabbed four plasma grenades and three frag grenades. He saw an elite and shot him down with his Battle Rifle. He shot a grunt to the head and killed a couple more grunts.
Finally the Chief thought after killing the wave of Covenant. But as soon as he thought that, more Covenant came rushing out of the boarding-craft. The Chief shot down all the grunts he could see and threw a frag grenade near the enemies. The frag took down all the elites’ shields and blew up all the grunts. The Chief used his Battle Rifle to clean up the elites. “Hey check it out, the Malta has already driven off its boarders!” One of the marines said. “Malta what is your status?” Cortana asked. “I don’t believe it! There retreating, we won!” A marine in the station called Malta replied. The Chief walked toward the window to see but as soon as he got there he wished he hadn’t. There were a couple of sparks then the Malta blew up. “This is bad. Real bad.” A marine said. The station the Chief was on rumbled a bit. The door behind the Chief blew up in blue plasma. The Chief turned and threw a frag then finished off the remaining grunts and elites with his Battle Rifle. The Chief walked through the door and saw a couple marines fighting a lot of Covenant. The Chief looked up and saw two grunts had manned plasma turrets. The Chief shot both of the grunts with his Battle Rifle. He turned to his left and saw an elite. A couple plasma bolts struck him in his chest. The Chief doubled over but quickly recovered and stuck the elite with a plasma grenade. A couple more grenades and bullets and all the grunts and elites were dead. “Uh-oh. Hey, there leaving the Athens.” One marine said. The Chief knew what that meant, more explosions. The Athens exploded into a million pieces. “Cortana, assessment.” Johnson demanded. “That explosion came from inside the Athens, same as the Malta.” Cortana replied. “The Covenant must’ve brought something with them. A bomb.” “Then they defiantly brought one here.” Lord Hood said over a radio. “Chief, find it.”
The Chief walked through a door and killed some elites. He opened another door. And saw what seemed to be textures of jello in the air. The Chief shot it and it revealed an elite. The Chief walked up some stairs and heard a marine yelling and plasma fire. The Chief opened fire on two veteran elites. He barely dodged the plasma bolts that the elites fired but soon they were dead. The Chief sprinted down the hall picking up a plasma rifle on his way. He turned left, sprayed the grunts that waited for him with plasma and continued up some stairs. A door opened with two elites and five grunts. He sprayed the grunts down then sprayed the elites down. The Chief walked toward a couple humans fighting the Covenant. “I was almost onboard when they showed up.” Miranda Keyes said. “Don’t worry ma’am were on it” Johnson replied. Grunts rushed out of cover and the Chief used his Battle Rifle to take them out. A couple elites rushed out and the Chief threw a frag toward them, cleaning them up with his Battle Rifle. “Thanks Chief, I owe you one.” The Chief went through a door and jumped onto ground. The Chief shot down a couple of jetpack elites and went through another door and saw a couple drones. A drone with a box hovered over the Master Chief. The Chief dove away as the drone dropped it the Chief turned and shot the drone. The Chief finished the rest of the drones with no problem. The Chief slid down a slope in front of him and walked into an elevator and activated it. “Just so you know, there are quite a few elites guarding the bomb. You may need to get creative.” Cortana said. The Chief threw a plasma in and finished the remaining grunts off. The Chief jumped onto the higher level and jumped behind an elite assassinating him. The Chief picked up the needler the elite had and blew up another elite. The Chief used his SMG to kill the last elite. The Chief jogged over to the bomb. Cortana flashed onto the pedestal next to the bomb. “Me inside your head. Now.” The Chief touched the pedestal and felt a cold rush go into his head. The Chief deactivated the bomb. “How much time was left?” The Chief asked. “You don’t want to know.” “Cairo, this is In Amber Clad. The carriers shield is down. I’m in position and ready for immediate assault.” Miranda Keyes said over the radio. “Negative commander. Not against a ship that size, not on your own.” Lord Hood replied. “Sir, permission to leave the station.” “For what purpose Master Chief?” Lord Hood asked. “To give the Covenant back their bomb.” Lord Hood thought for a moment, scratched his head and answered. “Permission granted.” The Master Chief pulled the bomb all the way to the elevator. “I know what you’re thinking. And it’s crazy.” Cortana said. “So, stay here.” “Unfortunately for us both, I like crazy.” Cortana replied. The Chief stepped out of the elevator and looked out the window. He was just about to pull on the switch when Cortana asked “What if you miss?” “I won’t” The Chief knew what would happen if he did miss.
