"We sleep peaceably in our beds, because rough men stand ready to visit violence upon those that wish to do us harm."

"Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of all those who threaten them."

I just got Halo 2 Vista and a Xbox 360 controller for windows and while playing the first arbiter level encountered some problems.

Without doing anything the controls would just switch
X would melee
B would jump
A would reload

The thumbsticks would also get messed up where I couldn't move to the right and look to the left at the same time.

So my question is is the problem a game one or one with the controller?

Would you have happened to plug in your controller while playing Halo 2 Vista? I know my controls went wacky from time to time when I did that. I don't know why. But the problem was fixed by plugging in the controller before I play the game.

You may also wish to consider downloading downloading the Xbox 360 controller drivers, too. It'll work without downloading the drivers from the Microsoft Hardware website, but it is recommend.

But uhm, I've never really heard of anything like this happening, so this is all I got. Hope this helps.

I think I already dowloaded the drivers I'm assuming that's what it prompted me to do when I first installed it.

The controller is wireless and the thing that gets plugged in has been in since X-mas.

Try downloading the drivers.
Wired Controller
Windows Vista 32 bit Edition
Windows Vista 64 bit
Wireless Controller
Windows Vista 32 bit Edition
Windows Vista 64 bit

EDIT: Damn. I didn't see the part about downloading drivers already. Woops. Ignore the part above. Try reinstalling the drivers. Change the batteries maybe? By the way, turn on the controller before you play Halo 2 Vista.
Try this too:
Click Start --> Control Panel --> Game Controllers --> Select the Controller --> Click Properties --> Setting Tab --> Then press either "Reset to default" or "Calibrate"

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

I've heard of this problem before, in fact I think it can happen with keyboard and mouse too. Buggy crap.

There's actually some alternative, non-Microsoft X360 controller drivers out there. I'd link you, but I can't remember of any such websites at the moment. But they exist.

When I grow up, I want to be just like goofenhour.

Wired controllers are a lot easier to use.
