I know that there are thousands of different theories out there and I may be posting something that has been posted before, so if this has been heard before go ahead and flame all you want.

I was sitting back reading through 'The Flood' again and I thought, "Everyone thinks that the Forerunner are just like humans because Halo is so 'earthy' with oceans, deserts, and other climates found on Earth, but what if the Forerunner were actually at war with humanity and built Halo to test the Flood on humans?" This may sound far fetched but I think that it is possible that long ago humanity may have been quite advanced and were at war with the Forerunner. Maybe the Forerunner were being pushed back and slowly overcome so they created a 'super organism' to kill off their enemies, namely us. They built Halo to resemble Earth and captured some humans to test the Flood on. This fits in with what 343 GS said about Halo being to study the Flood. This would have to mean that humanity was driven to near extinction so that we had to start from the ground up. This could tie in to Noah's Ark and the great flood. We sinned against the Forerunner and they released the Flood to wipe us from the earth. A limited amount of people survived and we had to rebuild to get to an advanced stage and are finally there when Halo occurs. I think that this could also be supported by 343 GS asking the Chief why he has a problem with starting up Halo again. He implied that the Reclaimer had started it in the past with no qualms. This implies that the Reclaimer had been to Installation 04 and talked with Guilty Spark before starting up Halo. I think that the Forerunner left behind some Halos as a parting gift to the humans, so that when we returned to an advanced civilization we would hopefully stumble upon one of the Halos and set it off returning ourselves to the beginning once again. This would fit in with the whole Covenant religion too because, naturally, they would want us dead because their 'gods' the Forerunner tried to wipe us out.

My theory is still a little rough around the edges, but I think that it is a probable theory.

This is actually one of the better theories I've heard. Doesn't explain the "Our lost history..." part from GS. Other than a few "i can't believe that you brought such crapy tech MC" stuff from GS, your theory fits the story pretty well.

Maps leading to Earth, to help other races kill us, and maps leading to Halo 04 so that we screw ourselves. Plus the Forerunners needing the Flood as GS said. Good job dude.

Halo is so 'earthy' with oceans, deserts, and other climates found on Earth because humans built it. There is a possibility that long ago humanity may have been quite advanced and were at war with the Forerunner, they built Halo to resemble Earth cause the ran out of inhabital planets and in experiments accidently created the Flood and decided to use Halo to study the Flood. in the process the Flood got out driving humanity to near extinction so that we had to start from the ground up. A limited amount of people survived and we had to rebuild to get to an advanced stage and are finally there when Halo occurs. Wow, this is actually a pretty good theory. You get major props.
Anyway, there is still another small question I'd have. . . if the Halo-rings can destroy all sentient life in the galaxy when they're activated, why would the forerunner need a biological weapon to use against humanity, especially one with such catastrophic possibility of backfiring against the flood? I know there could be countermeasures against the rings pulse, but if the humans had them and the flood were released upon humanity, wouldn't the flood find a way to use those countermeasures as well, ultimately making them invincible?

The Halos being able to wipe all sentient life from the galaxy could be a precaution so that if something did go wrong and either the humans or Flood were wiping them out they could take us all down with them. I mean, if you were being driven to extinction you would make some kind of super weapon to try and take them out, but there is always the chance that it won't work. In that case you have a back up that you will use in the last days of your species, so that even though you were beat you spit in your enemies face.

Good theory, however before this post is gonna turn into a 300 page post i want my two cents in. Its a good theory, but has no one ever thought up that the damn Forerunners are there own damn race and haven't evolved from nothing? Why is that so hard to think about instead of having 50 million posts about the same subject all ending up to have 300 pages. So stop with the theories and let Bungie explain it to us or it will just remain a mistery, but my thoughts are they're either their own race (which seems to not be possible with you people) or I think they would have evolved from the Spartans considering what 343 GS talkes about in Two Betrayals and pretty much everything he says.

Was it not clear from my post that I believe that the Forerunner are a differerent race? I don't get why everyone thinks that they will magically show up and save the day. I think that they may now be the 'Illuminati' of the universe, silently manipulating events. They could be the catalysts of the Covenant-Human war for some unknown reason.

What if instead of the forerunner building Halo to mimic earth it was the other way around and there was no war but humans started out on Halo and the forerunners sents us to earth to protect us from the flood.possible.
