This is a RETICULE, and that is a RETICLE. I'm using the latter to aim. And what are you using?

Hiya!

Since about a week ago I'm experiencing some serious lag when playing H:PC online, and I'm really out of solutions.

First of all, I've never had lag before unless it was the connection/server that caused the lag. I usually refuse to play on servers I get a ping higher than 100. But now I'm lagging real bad even though my average ping is still somewhere from 30 to 70; I drop off ledges and cliffs, run into obstacles, and people complain about me warping.

By now I've re-installed H:PC twice already, used Ad-Aware to get rid of spyware, etc., defragmented my HDD twice, ran complete system check for viruses (which I do once a week anyway), checked my firewall configuration, and so on. Unfortunately without result. And oddly H:PC is the only game I'm getting lag with.

I didn't install any new software (except a few offline games) and for testing purposes I booted my machine without running any background applications like firewall, virus scanner, etc. Still lagging. I configured the firewall to block all traffic/applications except for H:PC and I'm still lagging.

System specs (don't laugh):
Intel P4, 2.4 GHz
512 MB RAM
ALL-IN-WONDER 9000 *cough* (64 MB)
Realtek AC'97 Audio

I'm running H:PC in 1024x768 with all visual effects turned off or set to minimum except for decals. I've been playing that way for more than a year now without ever getting any lag at all.

Frankly, I don't know what to do anymore. Any suggestions are highly welcome. Thanks in advance. :)

Cheers!

EDIT: My connection speed is 2048 kbit download, 256 kbit upload.
EDIT #2: Using these command line parameters: -use11 -novideo -vidmode 1024,768,75 -screenshot -nojoystick

are you sharing any files over a network?
and i hate to tell you this, but on spyware program is rarely enough. the best combination of programs that i have seen is ad-aware, spybot s&d, and spyblaster.

This is a RETICULE, and that is a RETICLE. I'm using the latter to aim. And what are you using?

The only software I updated recently, but 2 1/2 weeks ago, were Firefox and Thunderbird. And no, I don't run any filesharing or other INET-dependant applications. As I said, I configured my firewall to block all traffic except from H:PC and H:CE.

I do have a cable modem and checked all connections already. A few months ago I had a similar problem already due to a broken cable, but that affected not only Halo but everything else (browser, email client, other games) as well. I even called my ISP because of that problem, and they did a connection-speed check. Everything ok.

I do have H:PC patched to 1.06 but did that long before I experienced any problem with the game. And reverting to a previous patch is something I want to avoid; I waited quite long until I installed 1.06 and only that did because there were almost no more servers not running 1.06 themselves.

And doing a complete reinstallation of the OS.... I had to do that in November and it sucked so utterly bad... But I guess I don't have to tell you how annoying it is. :)

And about spyware: my firewall recognizes all in- and outgoing traffic. Whenever any application wants to send/receive I get an according message. As I said, I have blocked everything there is except Halo and still lagged like hell.

Well, seems like I have to force myself to reinstall the &%$/!$%/&% machine ... again. :-/

Thanks anyway to all of you! :)

Heyyo,

Hmm, I suggest lowering your screen rez. I have a Sapphire 9800 PRO, and I still only play onna screen rez of 800x600 cause I want constant framerates. Bad framerates means your comp's trying to work too hard, and that not only can cause videolag, but actual network lag since you're not sending/receiving at full speeds.

Yeah, I suggest checking into any p2p programs or anything that might be runnign either on your comp or anyone else's that's plugged inot your connection.

Now, is it just HaloPC that's messing up, or is it other games like UT2k4, Battlefield series, etc? if it's more than halo, then that could be your actual ISP connection, or a prob on your end of the connection.

My router's a peice of crap SMC router, and once every 2 months or so I unplug it for 10 mins and plugi it back in so it resets.. it randomly enables the firewall and shuts off pots... such a crapper, lol. Just 2 days ago it changed the password! I dunno wth it is now.. so I'm resetting the router probably today or tmorrow.

Hmm... I have somewhat the same problem. A while back I had stopped playing halo pc, but a few months ago I started playing again, I didn’t get the 1.06 patch, but I lagged bad, really bad. Before I had stopped I could play a server for an hour straight and only have 1 or 2 X's when a laggy guy came in. but when I got back on, I -blaming- lagged bad. I couldn’t even get into a game. So I finally got the computer more ram, only had 128mb and the game just shot off in speed. So when I got into games I played for a few minutes then got lagged out, not banned. So I've tried to look for spyware, adware, viruses, bandwidth hogging programs, everything. *I used spybot, adware, Norton, and lastly hijack this* I’ve closed out all programs, as many processes as possible without windows becoming unstable. The only difference(s) between me and the thread creator is that I have 56k dialup, the comp specs, and that’s it.

Comp specs:
Intel Celeron 1.7ghz
246mb SDRAM
Direct X 9.0c
Windows XP sp2
Onboard graphics with 64mb
US Robotics 56k faxmodem 1807

ask for my hijack log.
That’s it for now.
