I've said this before, but I don't think people should even have the option of turning off the profanity filter. My reason for this is that the people who swear the most would immediately turn it off, as they obviously enjoy swearing for some reason. This defeats the purpose of the filter: to discourage people from using profanity and thus improve society in general. People aren't going to swear if they know it'll just be -blam!-ed out, and thus there is a lower likelihood of the forum turning into a lump of -blam!- (I am intentionally being ironic, by the way).

Just my opinion. And I agree that locking threads is the way to go. Deleting a post doesn't stop the next flamer from posting in response.
