Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

This thread contains compiled information from Bungie regarding missing unlockable items in Halo 3. Please note that you should be very careful to check that you have actually met the requirements for unlocking an item before consulting this thread.

Please remain on-topic with all discussion in this thread, as it will be carefully monitored.

Question: My Security Shoulders/Katana never unlocked when I originally attained the necessary gamerscore. Will they finally unlock when I earn the new achievements?

Answer: Posted by: SketchFactor
Unfortunately there is a known bug with these two unlockable items that sometimes results in players not getting them when they should. Our testing has shown that in some cases, people do get these items as they earn additional gamerscore through the new achievements but sometimes they do not. This is being investigated further.
Posted by: Achronos
Generally, the rule is you need 49 achievements and 1000 gamerscore.

However, both of those, especially the security permutation, have a few edge cases where they can unlock early, relock, unlock again, etc.

But in most cases, 49 achievements and 1000 gamerscore will get them. If not, get another achievement.

Question: I had the Katana and/or Security Shoulders unlocked for a while, but for some reason, they have re-locked and I can't use them! What's going on?

Answer:
Posted by: Achronos
I would generally suggest that you not expect the Katana or security shoulders to "stay" unlocked unless you have all 49 original acheivements. That's not to say it won't unlock when you hit 1000 gamerscore, or even stay unlocked, but we have observed scenarios where... unexpected things happen... similar to how the security shoulders behave in strange ways for some people.
Posted by: Achronos
There is a bug that unlocks the Security Shoulders too early, and then auto-corrects itself the next time you get gamerscore in Halo 3. You actually shouldn't get them until you have Halo 3 gamerscore in the high 900s. (really high, almost 1000)

Regardless, the answer to "how do I get them back" is "unlock all the achievements in Halo 3". Bam.

Question: I have achieved the rank of lieutenant or higher. Where's my Spartan Officer Achievement?

Answer:
Posted by: SketchFactor
The Spartan Officer Achievement used to require a GLOBAL ranking of Lieutenant (not to be confused with the new “Lightswitch” achievement which is earned by obtaining a rating of Lieutenant in a single playlist). We are aware of some problems with people disconnecting/powering down too soon after they finished the game that earns them the achievement. The problem is that the actual results of the game and awarding of the EXP happens on the back-end and is arbitrated by the LIVE service. If you disconnect before that completes, you won’t actually get credit.

The good news is that now the Spartan Officer, UNSC Spartan and Graduate achievements are all tied to the new per-playlist rating. So if you have already surpassed those milestones on a global level but never earned them, you can do it again by earning a 50 EXP level in a specific playlist. However, the pin that shows up in your Service Record is still tied to a global rating. So you can unlock the achievements by earning EXP in a playlist but you won’t get the pin unless you satisfy the original global criteria. Whew. Got all that?

Question: I was playing on Cold Storage and I just completed the requirements for one of the achievements that requires a Legendary Map. Why didn't I get the achievement?

Answer:
Posted by: SketchFactor
Cold Storage has been lumped in with Legendary DLC maps for the purposes of matchmaking but it is not really a "Legendary" map in terms of the achievement requirements. Avalanche, Blackout and Ghost Town are the three eligible maps for the new achievements.

Does this mean we should report threads about this and refer them to the sticky? Or just leave them be?

  • 01.02.2009 4:03 PM PDT

HHO.net

Maybe finally, this will stop all the Katanas and security perm threads. Those get annoying.

Yes, you can report such threads, or make a polite reply that just refers them to this sticky. Thanks!

Thanks guys!!! This was totally needed.

I did this really cool thing in MM, but when I looked at the armor screen I hadn't unlocked Recon. I wants it NAO!!! =)

But seriously. You might want to consider adding a little thing at the bottom about Recon and the vidmasters, if not now then when H3:ODST comes out. Assuming this sticky is still around then.

I think it might be good to add a quick summary box too. For example:

Spartan Officer: You need 50EXP in a single playlist, not overall.
Graduate achievement: You need 4EXP in a single playlist, not overall.

Rogue Helmet: See Spartan Officer achievement.
etc..

Just get all 49 ORIGINAL achievements. That is the easiest thing to do that will ensure the person to unlock the armor.

Indeed. I haven't had XBL for a long time, but I still come on her everyday.

Hopefully, this will reduce the number of threads regarding achievements and such. Even if it doesn't, it will definitely make things much easier to explain. Gracias mi amigo = ]

Theres been instances where people have 1000 GS, but not all 49 achievements, however I believe that is the best method.

I unlocked recon for half a game

then it relocked,

dang it.

but, on topic, I did have trouble loading my Katana at first but I just went into forge and loaded all the maps individually and then I got my Katana.

something else that usually works too is cycling through ALL of the armor permutations (spartan and elite) and then playing a game with each of the armor permutations

(my friend did this)

Great sticky Foman, but why didn't you post this in the main forum AND pin it, because no one looks at the stickys

So I need 50 EXP to get the Graduate Achievement? I wish I had known that information when the TU2 FAQ was first released...
