What if you guys (b.net crew) made some new special avatars for people who have been part of the community for X amount of time, for example say two years or three years.Would it be possible, and would any one like to see it?

Correct me if I am wrong but I think Bungie is still acepting Avatars that may or may not be added to the Avatar poll even though the Avatar contest has been over.

No one will ever be able to have custom avatars on this website.

Not quite true...

If you put in the work to make a 7th Column theme, you get a Custom Avatar.

I know exactly what you mean and this is something we've been kicking around for a while... how do we "reward" our longstanding members who contribute positively to our site? Avatars could be one way of doing that. This idea is one thing on our long list of stuff we'd love to do someday. Unfortunately it's not quite that easy...anything I dream up, Achronos has to figure out how to actually implement. =) What other stuff do you think would be cool?

For example - a "private" forum, only accessible by members who achieve a certain rank? The ability to use color signatures? Special avatars? Special titles?

The tricky part is also creating and managing the system that decides who is what "rank." While being a member for X days, months or years is certainly part of it, it's not the whole picture. We want people who are contributing - making worthwhile forum posts, helping people out, submitting news and are just active in general on the site - making our overall community a better place.

I wouldn't say only to people that have been here for a while. I would think it is better if they chose people that were active and helpful. Being here longer doesn't ALWAYS mean they are better.

If Bungie has someone who would be willing to figure out all the statistical analysis software, a feedback system would be awesome! A simple click if someone's post is nice, mean, spam, informative, misplaced. That way, a nice way of complementing someone would be born.

How about a system of Mod-points.....

If you happen to make a sensible post and a mod sees it you can get positive feedback from a Mod.....

It seems like one extra thing for a Mod to do so its not such a great idea.....

but it could be implemented into the veteran status thing you mentioned before...

Certain levels of veterancy unlock certain attributes.....

This would make the "New Hotness"....Muy Caliente Hotness...

6 months: new avatars
1 year: Color Signatures
1.5 yrs: Post counter
2 yrs or more: custom avatar color writing?

I think that having a special forum for those who make positive posts or mature gamers that have been with the site for a long time would be an awesome idea. I myself dont see the fuss about the color sigs and the avatars but if thats what other people want I think that would be cool to.

perhaps a system that could work is the system that they have at red vs blue... give people say 20 mod points where they can mod other member posts... this would hopefully eliminate spam and irrelevant posts while rewarding thoughtful , insightful and interesting posts.

Ahhh, is this why the Theme Builder's custom avatars aren't in place yet? I'd assumed it was just a few clicks to do, but since when has anything ever been so simple with the running of these forums ;)

Now that you guys have sorted most of the scalability problems out of the seventh column, and given that the search feature isn't far off, do you have any plans for a further temperature increase for the forums?

It shouldn't be related to join date, it should be related to contributions. It's in now way an exclusive club if the only requirement is to sit on your hands for X amount of months.

Basing it on profile age is still just a pointless status symbol, which would imply th same problems as post count. If anything, I should hope that it's hand-picked by staff and moderators.

I see this as being a good incentive for better quality posts.

When I first became a moderator, it was a case of fiddling with the database.

I PMed Achronos with an idea like this. You coud have a new role called "Respected Member," anyone decided by Bungie to be contributing - making worthwhile forum posts, helping people out, submitting news and are just active in general on the site - making our overall community a better place would be picked as one of these Respected Members. Since they would have no special powers it would be as simple as making a new role, and the advantage is people will know who to trust and believe on Bungie.net and these members would be rewarded for their loyalty to the 7th Column. Kick it around and see what you guys think.

And anyone who posts ANYTHING about any sort of vehicle in the video game "Halo" that resembles one or more of the following colours: "Yellow, Golden, LOL11!1" is not eligible for this "Special Member" award.

The Feedback system for members I think is also a good idea. Albiet a lot of work, but a good idea. So far the tempature increase of the 7th Column is welcomed.

I think that such rewards for meaningful and positive contributors to these forums is a wonderful idea. In terms of how to go about choosing such individuals, maybe it can be done in a trustworthy, downstream effect.

For instance, there are moderators of these forums that have been chosen by Bungie, correct? Therefore, I think they would also be the perfect candidates to choose these meaningful and positive forum contributors for rewards. (I think this idea might work best if they're volunteers and not paid Bungie employees because this might be extra work that might not be considered "productive" enough for their paychecks, but that's just a wild assumption.)

I also think this job, for the forum moderators, can be broken down further like this.

If this might be too much for already-in-place forum moderators to handle, maybe the current moderators can have two categories. They can choose positive contributors (who receive special benefits), but then they can also choose positive contributors who can in turn choose other positive contributors to receive these rewards.

So you can almost think of it like this.

Tier 1: Bungie employees
Tier 2: Forum moderators
Tier 3: Meaningful and positive forum contributors (who in turn can choose Tier 4 individuals)
Tier 4: Meaningful and positive forum contributors (they just receive the positive contributor benefits, but cannot choose others)

Obviously, Tier 1 people can choose Tier 2, Tier 3, or Tier 4 people. Tier 2 can choose Tier 3 or Tier 4 people. And Tier 3 people can choose Tier 4 people. Maybe you can even give the Tier 3 people a set, or limited, number of people they can choose, just to keep things under control. And, of course, Tiers 1 and 2 can remove Tier 3 or 4 people at any time. I wouldn't think because of a sudden lack of contribution, but maybe for mis-behavior.

Sound like kind of a good idea? =) Maybe?

Tier system is a good idea... in an ideal community....but their are liars and abusers....I am almost sure that could be abused... as good as it sounds. It is truly impossible to know someone on the internet.

You could piss someone off at a respected level and they could start the abuse....
