I think that a vote by the whole community is absolutely necessary. Because, in my opinion, in order to be in the council you would need to be recognised by people in most of the forums, not just the Septagon. I actually think that it wouldn't be such a bad idea to have some of the respected members from
New Mombasa, or Zanzibar, in order to not only get a well mixed bunch, but also to make the other forums feel that they have been represented in some way.

And how would one poll the whole community?

 • 05.01.2005 9:50 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

Except that the people in New Mombasa, Zanzibar, and Optimatch probably have no idea who any of the people on these lists are. The probably don't care about the community too much, and would most likely choose randomly, ruining the vote. Plus Stickman Army has a good point. The only way that would work well would be for Bungie to appoint them, sure some people will be unhappy, but people are always unhappy, no matter what happens. BTW Pink Menace, I don't mean any offense to you, but including yourself in a list of 9 people (unlike Rip's list of 53 people) doesn't look good.
I think Rip covered what the Council should do extremely well, some new themes and avatars would be great. Perhaps the Council could pick a "short list" from the available themes and avatars (since I'm sure many are submitted), and then let Achronos(or whoever chooses the themes and avatars) choose from this list of good themes/avatars. This way, the council could influence the avatars/themes, but still leave the final decision to the powers that be (plus it makes their job easier, because they do not have to wade through all the bad avatar/theme submissions, so it could be done more efficiently. Then the community has more themes and avatars, and everyone is happy). Also, it is absolutely necessary that the Council be able to look at almost any group's forum and resources (obviously excluding HFCS, and the other super-secret chapters). I apologize if my suggestion about themes and avatars is worded poorly, I am very tired, but I think you get the idea.

Word. If we could get the whole community to vote, that would be great. But i am afraid that it won't work. hell, i bet if you'd ask what the 7th column is in New Mombasa or Zanzibar, probably only 50% can answer that question. And with Bungie letting us do everything by ourself, that leaves us with one option: WE do the voting. If those who actually contributed to this thread + the elder B.net members + the mods would would all make a list of 12 people. The three people( depending on how big the council will be) with the least votes are not in the council.

Another option: We take Rip Saw's list and start scraping people of that we DON'T want to see in the council, or simply aren't good enough.

These are just 2 idea's, and i know both are pretty elitist and unfair, but i simply don't care. To semi-quote a great movie: I'm not trying to be a man of the community, i'm trying to be a man for the community.

If someone has a better idea, and one that is more fair than mine. Please say so.

1) No, i think this idea is pretty good.

2) I personally think that council members should have a say in mods, but i'm not sure Bungie or current mods would agree with us.

3) Let's just take all lists made here and put all different members in it, then we can start the elimination processes. Maybe get it down to say 12, like just another fan said and then let Bungie and the community decide.

4) I think that approving new themes and avatars would be a good idea, though i think we should be quite careful about how much power we give the council. Maybe they should have a say in these matters, but not the final say.

5) Jeez this thread is big

6) A community poll would be very difficult to achieve. I think we should just have a poll here as this is the fourm for the community, site etc. Anyone who wishes to vote, should come here. I think this is really the only way we can get the people who want to vote, to vote.

7) What do you think about the idea of spliting the council into sections. Have a section for avatars and themes etc, one for the spotlight, one for questions, complaints etc, one for the spotlight(s).?

8) A sudden question: If the council members are going to go round and check-up on all these different chapters, they will, at the moment, probably have to join them. Now, they're going to be pretty busy right? right. So, with some chapters this is ok. They are open and therefore council members can join and leave in their own time. However, and this is the problem, some chapters are not open. This would mean potentialy having to wait a long time to be accepted as a member. Now, here's my suggestion, would it be easier to allow council members to access chapters instantly regaurdless of if they are open or not to normal members? I don't know how easy this would be for Bungie to impliament, but i think it's worthwhile thiking about. so, what do you think?

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I think the council should make a big 10 that lists the groups with the most members. This would be cool cuz the big 10 could change because of new members to the site and groups.

I'll have to agree with Psyched on this one.(No, not because he threatend me ;) ). Member size doesn't not mean that a chapter is good.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Prophet- We've already decided that the Council, being for the 7th Column, will have no say in choosing the new mods. Although the council would be a great source to go to, it's out of their jurisdiction. And, they should definantly have the power to look in any group without the founder knowing. That way, they get to see a group acting normal, not putting up a show for the Council.

We can't let everyone vote. Like some of you said, half of the people in New Mombasa, Zanzibar, and Optimatch vote because they have no clue who these people are. I think we should do this like Just Another Fan said. Lets get Rip Saw's list and start picking people out of it. Simply because making a poll isn't possible. You would need about 11 threads to fit all the people listed.

Oooo. I have an idea! You tell me who you want off the list, and i'll add them to another list. Then, start removing names from the list.

But, before we do that, how many do we want to get the list down to? 12?

Please, do not be quote this whole post!!!!!!! You may refer to this post as http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=3225238

First off, I do feel that nominating yourself is slightly arrogant. I would never nominate myself for something unless I was the blazigly obvious best choice, and that doesn't really happen too often. The ONLY reason I put myself on my list is because not doing so would have been saying much, much more than doing so. It would have been saying "Look at me, I don't nominate myself. I'm a good person." BUT everyone has a right to be nominated, all you need is one other person to support you, and some names weren't listed either, so I'll let it slide (I will, not that my opinion matters).

Secondly, I really HATE the idea of taking people OFF a list. No good can come of it. I, and I'm sure many others, would refuse to participate in such an act. Instead, maybe we could PM some of these people and find out who would be willing. That way, we can at least kill off a lot of people who don't want to do it without bashing their good name. I ask because PMing all these people is questionable policy-wise. I would be more than willing to PM them all myself, despite the time factor, because the PM would have to be the same for everyone.

Does PMing ALL these people sound like a good idea? By the way, if there is ANYONE who would be unwilling to do so ONLY because it would be too much work, take yourself off the list now, because this list will be nothing compared to the responsibilities of the council, so save yourself the trouble of watching your name get crossed off, or worse, finding out you really don't have the patience to do what you get elected to do.

So, should we PM everyone? I have one possible message, and I’ve set it up so that it can be copy and pasted to a PM:

Hello. You have been messaged because someone pointed out that you are a good community member who is willing to help out. You may or may not have read The 7th Column Council thread in the Septagon, but your name was dropped anyways. If you have read the thread and are keeping up with it, you may just PM me with your response of yes or no. Yes being you accept your nomination, and no being you reject your nomination. If you’d please, you may give a short response as to why, and tell me if you want that response posted so others will know why you reject this nomination.

If you have not been keeping up with the thread, I will briefly sum it up, but I would suggest reading it anyways. Bungie wants a council of members from the 7th Column to help out and promote the Column by doing a bunch of stuff. A list of possible things the Council may do is listed as the second post on this page. (First post by Rip-Saw on page 16.) This list is rather comprehensive of the ideas expressed in the thread, but the thread should be read in its entirety to see all ideas in all forms. These are just ideas, and Bungie will have to approve them, and Bungie may add more or take most of them away. Also, it should be noted that Bungie may decide to take over the election process at any time and just appoint a council of their choosing, but we’re doing it our way for the time being.

It should be pointed out that all council members, when elected, will have significant duties to perform and will be held to rigorous standards to do them. The workload will probably be less than that of the moderators, but until the duties are finalized, there is no way to know for sure. Any other questions and you should read the thread. If you are unwilling to read the thread to answer your question, then you are probably not the material to be a council member, but you can always ask a question at the end of the thread, but the answers you may get are by no means final, or even consistent between members.

Please PM me with your yes or no answer, and your reason for no if it applies and you so desire to give one.

This PM is identical for everyone on the list.

Now, although I said I would be willing to do this by myself, sharing is fun. Any volunteers to help sent out the message? You would need to look up each name by going to the People Finder and entering their name. And don’t kid yourself, if this seems too hard, you probably don’t want to do the work the council would have to do. Of course, if anyone objects based on the principle of it (I almost do, which is why I’m posting this message instead of just saying “I’ll message everyone and get back to you on it”) say so. I don’t want to piss people off too much!

Please, do not be quote this whole post!!!!!!! You may refer to this post as http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=3225238

LIEK OMGEH.. i'm on the list!! I feel loved. However, you can continue japping about it, but you have to make a decision sometime. Delaying it would be the solution to bandwith problems with this site, because it's taking me ages to just visit my chapter(which turned into a one man show, come and see me!). So maybe it's time to like make a decision?

[edit] I can smell that it's been quite some time since I really posted some stuff. But I sincerely hope people will push the Council foward, I would love to join to. It would be a shame if the Council would be stuck at just an idea, considering it's a nice idea.

Is there a finalized list of candidates for this council? I've seen about five different lists so far, and they all seem to have different variants on them. Also, should there be an exact number of people on this council, or should it have as many people on as the Septagon sees fit?

First, why do you want to do that, and why would you ask in this thread?

Anyway, to join a group, go to their page, and click "Join Group". Fairly straightforward, if you ask me.
