OK, maybe I shouldn't be the one to do this, since I totally didn't even know about this thread until last Friday when it was too late to start posting stuff, but here goes.

From what I heard last time this was brought up, Bungie wanted this to somehow happen on it's own. They didn't want to pick the people, they wanted the people to pick themselves. Maybe this has changed, maybe it hasn't. I doubt it has.

Let us assume for the time being that the members of the council have to be picked by us. That means everyone at Bungie.net, not JUST the elder-folk such as myself (it'll have been a whole three years by the time many of you read this). The simple fact is, it'll be a popularity contest of sorts, but what election isn't? Was John Kerry the most popular this time around? No. Did Bush win because he was the most popular? Yes. I won't get into who would have been a better leader, but the simple fact is that it will be a popularity contest.

Who is popular? Well, the new guys may rally behind some young gung-ho spam-master, but fine. Odds are such a person won't feel like doing what the council requires them to do anyways. So the bad people will be ruled out from the start, or barring that, they will quit after a few days.

Who else is popular? Are people like mrsmiley popular? Yes. Does anyone here dare say mrsmiley isn't one of the hardest working founders ever? Don't say it in front of me, I'll chew you out, royally. The simple fact is that besides the few spam-masters, the new guys know who's a good community member and they know who is not. They won't be foolish about it. They know who to vote for.

I know what many of you are now saying, "Why can't Bungie make it easy on us and pick the members?" Well, obviously, this is a self run organization. As much as I really wouldn't HATE Bungie simply picking the members, I know a council run by the people elected from the people will get listened to and be judged more fair in the eyes of the people. And, sorry to borrow Achronos' hammer of brutal reality smattering (he used it on me once a week back in the day to crush my dreams of a better Bungie.net), but this extends to the mods as well. I'd love to see the mods have a say, but the brutal reality is a lot of people don't seem to like the mods, and a council elected from the mods' choice would be rejected by some of the members (I say sucks to them, but I've been told to be nice and respect the news guys, even the ones who suck).

So, the questions become, how will we vote, and who will we vote for. Since no one seems to want to be the first to jump into the pool and do what needs to be done, I'll answer one of those questions. I'm going to make a list. This list in no way comprises all who are worthy to be nominated. I will miss quite a few people due to them not being a member in a chapter I am a member in. These are not just people I like, these are people I know would be good at being in a council. They are mostly good content monkeys, and I know these people to have good character. They are people who have remained active, and will occasionally be an ancient member who isn't so active. Some of these people I know best from outside of Bungie.net (the chat) and will therefore be included because I'll assume they are active here as well. Please note, due to the time it started to take me, I only searched the members lists of Pandemonium and MSXL. This took a lot longer that I thought it would due to my farkling 1.5 meg connection moving at the pace of a 56k.

52 people.
1 person added after the fact.

Please note, I know I am missing a ton of good people. As I looked over this list, I had to add 2 names of people I had just remembered seeing in a post! There weren't in my chapters. I really do hate to be the bad guy who makes "the list" but someone has to do it. I am no more qualified to make this list that anyone else, and if you have names you need to see on a list, make your own list. If I forget anyone I'll add them, unless a ton of people get really pissed off at me making this list!

be sure to send me plenty of angry hate-pms since I know a lo of people will be angry. But someone HAD to do it!

How brave of you Rip. And the fact you put me on the list makes it even better :P
But i still wonder how this election will work, since well, it's big. And as you said, you missed a ton of people. Now, i won't really bother to make a list, since, if i should make one, it will be alot like Rip's anyway.

Also, i still believe that at least one bungie representative and one moderator should be added to the list, and council. Even if it are mere honorary titles.

Bungie would have to have at least some say in who's on the Council.

Sorry to use that hammer on you Rip Saw, but there is a possibility that trolls could be elected to the Council. Would you trust them with some sort of control over an entire section of bungie.net?

Although you have a good list there.

  • 04.26.2005 3:27 AM PDT

bah

I say "So what?" f a troll is elected, they will be overruled by the responsible council members time and time again. Of course I think Bungie needs to approve the final list (to make sure it wasn't dominated by trolls) but people who would want to delibrately mess things up could always be kicked out for not getting work done!

OMFG Rip's been here 3 years!

Heh. Good list Rip-Saw. Dont see my name ;) Some sensible people need to be in it. Not people are going to mess around. Now, the best people to ask is moderators and the general community. Bungie couod still have the final say, but i assume moderators and the community could inform Bungie who are worthy candidates.

There are users out there that could keep the whole thing "troll-free".

I feel that to elect new members or make any kind of decision, we'd need an overwhelming majority in support of the issue in question.

Yes. Good suggestion. But how many people could actually vote properly? ;)

After seeing Rip Saw's list of nominee's I think all the people on there would be good on a council and have no problem with any of them. I am sure that the community would back any of these people up in any final decision they would make. Anyway since Rip Saw only searched through a couple chapter I think I will add a few nominations to his list:

(sorry if I put a name twice from Rip's list)

snowmanaxt
Infil7rator
Reconcilation
MrJukes
VII Toast
yeroen (not sure if he's on the column anymore)
Synthmilk
Ropie
Guardian Hunter (yes that's me)
Atled
EAGLES5
Yoozel (If there is going to be a mod on the council Yoozel should be it becuase he's the nicest)

One last thing if there is going to be a council one member that has to be on it is mrsmiley. He has been on the column so long and is one of the most dedicated founders of a chapter out there. So if there is too be a council he has to be on it.

Toast is on there, that moderator comment won't get you liked by the other 9, and yeroen is a Bungie employee. Some of the others should be looked at, but I haven't even seen some of them.

Then again, there's the problem. Everyone thinks they should be on that list, yet who/what should be the deciding factor?

Maybe if Bungie got a few members that they really trusted/had had recommended by the mods, they could pick a sizable council to be checked out by a more involved employee.

52 + 1 more.

That has to be the official list because there are 53 members on it. ;)

P.S. Happy 3rd birthday Rip. I've recently had my 2.5 :D

And my real birthday is in 1 week.

I was saying Yoozel is the nicest becuase he helped me out when I was new to the column and answered all my questions.

No, what will Bungie do? Leave us to do our own thing, or what?

I don't know we could sit here and discuss it for years but if a bungie employee doesn't do something about it then its never going to happen becuase we don't have the power to create a thing like that.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I think Guardian would be a good guy to be in the council.
He is smart, mature and fair. He is also the leader of one of the largest groups around.

But, i hope the mods take a liking to this thread, beacsue its a good idea to have a group spotlight

Yeah, it is not a long list for such a large forum. And if you've been here for at leats a month in somewhere else than NM, then you would know (even if they don't know who the hell you are *cough*) most of them.

For the second time, Toast is already on the list.

And, uh, I'd say council members should know basic Bungie stuff. Like knowing different Bungie employees and such.
