First off to the Moderators, I usually just comment on forums, at first this topic was in the Bungie forum, it was locked because that wasn't the appropriate place for it. Then I put it in the flood off topic forum, but after reading the many pinned topics I'm assuming this is the best place for it, since my site is fan art and a portfolio. All I want is the opinion of halo fans on the work I've done. Thanks again...

Hi, My name is Juan Gonzales, I recently graduated with a degree in game art and design. I took the Holiday weeks to formulate my plan to sneak my toe into the gaming industry, part of it was making my website. I did a fan art level inspired by Halo, and decided to take my site in that direction.

http://www.3DAnomalies.com

My plan that eventually leads to World Domination goes as follows...
1. Apply to companies in Washington, including Bungie
2. Hope for the best, plan for the worse (plan B)
3. Plan B, Apply for game tester positions like crazy in Washington
4. Test games for a few months, while 3d modeling and adding to portfolio
5. Apply Apply Apply, Move on up
6. Gain knowledge from others as I move up in the industry
7. Become part of a company that will some day dominate the world
8. Plan for a Zombie invasion, survive zombie invasion, rebuild...

Seriously, though, I just wanted to throw this out to the halo community.
Please forgive me Moderators for having this in the wrong section at first, thank you for informing me of where this post belongs.

Thank you for your time and comments.

EDITS...

What Programs do I use?
I use 3ds Max, Photoshop, 3D Unfold, and Crazy Bump for a lot of the work I have up on the site. The in game levels are using the Unreal Engine.

What school did I go to?
Art Institute of Phoenix, but for the most part all schools show you just the basics, a large part of learning will be on yourself.

The art is amazing, you should be on your way to a job in 3D modeling. Please, do not stop your work, it looks fantastic.

I wish you luck into applying for a job at Bungie, or any other company.

Thank you all very much, I'll need all of the luck I can get. The "Breaking in" stories have been a huge inspiration to me. Right now I'm debating on what to model next, there are so many cool things in the Art of Halo 3 Book.

Try vehicles and scenery (foliage, rocks ect.) they should give you some good practice.

I clicked report on accident moderators, Im sorry.

As for the reply, I was looking at the concept art for high ground, it's pretty beautiful. That made me want to go with that type of environment, first i want to focus on more key pieces, a vehicle would be great.

I have no opinion one way or the other.

Holy crap. The fly-through of the level looks amazing. Good job.

Cold Storage concept, huh? Pretty cool, and people have been saying that Bungie should hire you... =)

Yeah, chill out was my favorite level in Halo:CE, when Cold Storage was released I was amazed at all the extra detail that they put in. From the screens of the Mythic map pack it seems like the levels are getting better and better.

Thanks again everyone.

Uh I'm a bit of a noob, what's an "Achronos"?

Nintenman7: Apply yourself... Seggi31: HHHHNNNNNNGGGGG

What to model next? Make a model of a Spartan wearing Recon armor. I've seen many attempt this, and every time something comes out wrong, and there is always some mistake that takes away the actual feel of the armor, see if you can make it without using Bungie's models, just photos and in-game service records... For some reason the model is challenging for many...

I'm going for something that wouldn't take that long, like an environmental asset. I'm also thinking of doing the helmet I wear in game. It would be cool to do something from the art book that didn't make it to the actual game.

Would that be a camo toe? Sorry couldn't resist.

8. Plan for a Zombie invasion, survive zombie invasion, rebuild...

Sad, deluded man. Nobody survives a zombie invasion.

Your fly through was super cool. That view to the left on the last hallways showing all of the cold storage units was creepy. I was sort of hoping to get a good view of something floating in one of the chambers. How long did that take to make?

It took about six weeks to do the entire level, that was of course with having other assignments to complete.

I build up so much tension, then at the end there are no monsters inside :( I would like to do a cool flood form in Z brush and throw it in there, but for the time being I would like to spit out more environmental hard surface models.

Thank you for the feed back.

Great job. The detail on everything looks amazing. Well hope you get the job. Good luck. Oh and one last thing, I think a vehicle would work. Later.

Very well done, looks like something Bungie themselves made! What kind of gaming program did you take and where?

Thanks,

I went to The Art Institute of Phoenix, but it really doesn't matter where you go, from personal experience and from what I've heard from others. Most classes will show you the basics, how to use a 3d program, how to texture, use photoshop, and all the other essential tools. It's up to you to do stuff on your own and really learn to use those programs, doing online tutorials really helps with this process and you learn alot that you might not in class. Also using key board short cuts is a must in any program.
My time at the school sucked, only because I was the Guinea Pig Class, the school didn't really know how to approach game art. Now they have more classes that focus on newer programs such as Z Brush.

I moved from the Chicago Land area to Phoenix because of this school, and now being done, I would advise that unless you are attending Digi Pen, just look for a place near home, and be prepared to learn alot on your own.

If your already into modeling i would suggest learning Z Brush, and also learning to rip normals off high poly models to put on low poly models. It saves a ton of polys.

That is a great portfolio, however if this is your "resume", I think you made a mishap. Submit this to Bungie studios and show them all of your work. I'm sure with this kind of talent of design, you will with no doubt make it into the studios. Great work!

Do you mean the resume that I have for download on my web page? I've been working on a cover letter, I'll be applying soon. There don't seem to be any game tester openings at the moment, so I'll take a shot in the dark with the 3D hard surfaces position.

I'm going to go edit the first post to answer a lot of the questions that people ask, that way it doesn't appear like I'm "bumping" my thread.

I love how you followed through with this and actually got the degree. You are my role model, those are awesome.
