Uh I'm a bit of a noob, what's an "Achronos"?

I was just wondering how everyone felt about modding Halo 1 without the use of Custom Edition. I personally do it, quite often, actually, and make better maps than I have ever seen in CE. I also have the ability to convert CE maps so they work in Full and Demo. I enjoy making and importing my own BSPs without CE... Why do people still use HEK when a Hex editor is all you need? I was just wondering since I have seen much better non-CE mods than I have ever seen from CE. I'm just making a point, and asking if anyone here is a Non-CE modder. I don't believe this post is going to break any rules, since the modding is for mapmaking, not for cheating...

Personally I think modding H1PC became old quite a long time ago.

One of the main drawbacks is that you have to go to a lot of effort to back your maps up, patch them, and revert the versions when you're done. Way too much hassle just to use some flying Warthogs. ;)

Well, the HEK is used for creating new maps. While a Hex Editor program would be just fine for modifying existing maps. It wouldn't be possible to create brand new maps, only by hex-editing, would it? =D

Yes, yes it would...

For instance, I'm currently working on Halo 3 Valhalla, for Halo 1, with nothing but my Hex editor... It's coming along quite nicely... Just import BSP, models, .projs, colls, and every other tag, then null the old BSP and its coll, then perfect... Halo 1 modding with my HE works just great...

Yes, but that's just a matter of switching values, not creating unique content. I wouldn't imagine anyone would want to create bitmaps, BSPs, or any other tag files via only hex-editing xD

But of course, hex-editing is just fine for, as I said, modifying existing maps. A lot of stuff is more-than possible by editing values/references within the map. But like I said, you'll need the HEK tools to create and compile unique content such as maps, bitmaps, and vehicles.

May I ask how you imported extra tags in to a compiled Halo .map file with only a hex editor, if at all? Or do you just know Halo's internal map structure that well? >:3
