Hi coylter. Well i will give you some links,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/celeron-d.html

checkout hte overclock one in there (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/celeron-d_7.htm l)

and also look at the benchmarks, you are under estimating the celeron D greatly, it is keeping up with the Athlon XP easy and in 3dmark 2003 the celeron 2.8 D out preforms the pr 2.4c and the athlon 3200+. Looking at the overclocking section its clear they overclock very well. (far better than Athlon Xp) Im not an Anti AMD guy, im just saying the celeron D is much much better tha you guys think. Intel should have named it completly differnt than celeron so people wont mistake it for the old northwood crap.

Yea sure....

YES you can overclock it to 3.8ghz BUT you cant use this speed for your general use...ITS WAYYYY too hot....Yes it will boot.....but it wont run anything because of overheating....Hell those cpu often overheat at stock speed.

I can also overclock my xp to 2.8ghz (wich is helllla faster than your celeron overclocked to whatever you want....but i will not be able to run any application without overheating....

OH i found this....
However, during our overclocking experiments it turned out that the standard cooler shipped with Celeron D is too weak to ensure sufficient cooling for our testing participants. During work both overclocked Celeron processors got overheated real quick, which resulted in system instability. Therefore, if you are planning to per4form some Celeron D overclocking make sure that you have a good cooler at hand. During our tests we used one of the best air cooling solutions from Zalman – CNPS7000A-Cu.
Yea with this cooler i can get 2.7ghz with a 2500xp-m.....Thats faster than a p4 3.2ghz beleive it or not.

OHHH just found this also....
However, I would like to point out that the performance gain obtained by the new Celeron D processors is unfortunately too low for them to compete with the corresponding AMD Athlon XP solutions on equal terms. AMD processors selling at the same price are still faster, although not all the time and not that much faster now.
See....for the same price you get a better axp.....

If it cant run any apps at 3.8 GHz than how did it do all that benchmarking? And iv overclocked AXP s too and overclock to 2.8 GHz is near impossible (need very good cooling) and it has to be the mobile version (overclock better) and theres no way its gonna be 100 percent stable at that speed. I overclocked my friends celeron D to 3.74 GHz and it outpreforms one of my systems easy (2.8c). You might think since it prescott it runs very hot, true it runs warm but not even close to as hot as the p4 Prescott, slightly hotter than P4c. You notice that even at stock speeds the celeron d holds its own agnist the AXP?

Like i said....yea they do better than old celeron.....but still not good enough.....axp are still better for the price.....

They benchmarked at 3.8ghz with another cooler. Stock one was not good enough.

I can run my axp at 2.8ghz with my aero 7+ ....dont stay on for more than 45sec.

xpm are very good overclocker and possibly the best chip on earth (speed wise)
Take for exemple the xp-m 2600+ (110$)

With stock cooler it hit 2.5 ghz easily (Above a p4 3.2ghz)
With a good air cooling it hit 2.7 ghz easily (Equal to an fx-51)
With water cooling it hit 2.9ghz (Over a fx-53)
With promethia it hit 3.1ghz (well over a fx-53)
With a good phase-change system working with r23 it can hit and run very stable at 3.5ghz (No chips on earth can beat that)

Overclock anything to any speed you will never beat a axp working a 3.5ghz.

BTW my friend built himself a phase-change systeme working with r23 , its able to keep a cpu die at -80C. He is getting his xp-m 2600+ in a few weeks so i will reports the results as soon as possible....We should be getting 3.5ghz and maybe more.

I overclocked that celeron D ON STOCK COOLING, to 3.7, temps from 42-53 (not that bad).
You said you overclocked your 2600 Mobile to 2.9,3.1 and all. you had to use some damn expensive cooling water cooling, 200 dollars + that is. Even without overclocking the Celeron D is preforming pretty well agnist the AXP. Its true the AXP is still better but that doesnt make the celeron D a POS. When overclocking dont even compare...when toms hardwar e used Niterogen cooling when there 2.8C P4 it overclocked 5.3 GHz and at that point it even outpreformded the FX-53 overclocked (nitrogen cooling)3.2GHz. And if that thing overclocked to 3.5 GHz it wouldnt even be stable.

From
Theinquirer

"
The latest Prescott based Celeron has double the level two cache and a faster front side bus, which makes it a very different beast. When X-bit labs compared the performance of the Prescott and Northwood Celerons, the difference was like night and day. (1). However, X-bit labs noted that the Athlon XP was still a bit better chip for games. Readers of Microsoft’s gaming PC page should be made aware that the Prescott Celeron is a suitable processor for gaming."

If your overclocking than get

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-1 09-012&depa=1

If not a stock one isnt enough

Than this is pretty good fan
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-1 03-139&depa=1

But if you dont overclock the stock fan should be enough. Also make sure you use Artic Silver 5 for your thermal compound.

Its IS descent....Never said the opposite.....BUT its not good enought to hold its own agains an axp so there is no reason to recommand it over the axp. Thanx have a good day.

BTW i am kinda disapointed that this is no longer a sticky. Can i have an explanation?

It's true about Dells having bottlenecks. I have looked at the dell ads and they put a super fast CPU in, but give it minimal memory and a crappy graphics card. I bought mine new for $1200 with a 2.0Ghz P4, 256MB ram, Ge-Force 4 MX 420 and a SB Live! Value sound card. I have since upgraded the memory to 1GB using PNY Brand, and the video card, a Ge-Force 5200 with 128 MB.

The bottleneck comes from the fact that Dell put in a 4x AGP slot instead of an 8x, AGP slot, which was brand new technology that has just rolled out of the factory.

Nevertheless, my Dell plays Halo quite beutifuly in 640x480, (I don't mind the jaggies) with specular turned off.

Word of advice, don't buy dells to play games on. The hardware is only good for playing the year's games that you buy it in and then it's reduced to internet, e-mail and school.

If you got the money, buy into an Alienware ALX system, the hardware will be able to play new games for at least 3 or 4 years down the road. I know I'm going to get one when I got the money.

no no no no and no! DON'T ever buy an Alienware ALX they are too OVERPRICED. They are good pcs but with the money you use to buy that pc you can build one 10 times better for the same money and you will have like 1.000$ for cleaning your ass with them. I have 1.250$ and im building a pc that has almost the same power than the alx. This is no lie, BUILD YOUR OWN PC i bet your pocket will be happy to do so ( you can build a pc with the SAME things teh alx has inside for less money - i will tell you for a 1.000$ less- no lie BELIEVE ME)

BTW: im building my gaming rig for 1.250$ and its beats the normal alienware amd based pcs and it cost almost the half of it!!

The pc im getting is from newegg.com (the best pc parts retail seller) and its on my signature.

Dood... why waste your money on socket 940? Socket 939 A64 chips have a nice performance gain over the socket 940's. Forget the A64 3400+ and get a 3500+. And plz plz get more than 512mb of ram... at least a gig if you want that rig to scream through games.

For some really killer info on hardware, check these forums out. No better place to get info on the net.
www.ocforums.com

-=[edit]=-
Also, it might be a good idea to think about getting a geforce 6600 GT. They're typically about 20-40% faster than a 9800 XT. They'll even outperform an x800 Pro in Doom 3... not too shabby for a $200 card. ;)

hey guys i changed the 9800 pro for the 6800 and i made a good choice because i was getting the 9800 128mb 219$and far cry ( the game for 31$ more) and i changed for the 6800 128mb 283$( faster than the 9800pro and it includes far cry for free!! is there anything better in this wrold?) have i made a good choice in changing the video crad ? i did this because the mobo had an nvidia chipset and i didnt wanted to mess ati with nvidia asus mobo wtih nvidia drivers.... this is a good reason.

I wont go with socket 934 because i cant afford so much money so i stick with the best socket 754 combo ( the amd 64 3400 and the asus k8n-e nforce3 250gb mobo) Is this an intelligent decision?

BTW: everything i know about hardware, i learned it from Coylter and moriarity. ( i thank both of you)

what do you ( coylter, yellow dart and any1 else) about my pc configuration for less than 1250$?

Hey coylter, i have 3 questions for you:

1. What is what everyone talks about something called 3dmark04 or 05?

2. Is there any asus mobo socket 939 with the nvidia chipset nforce3 250Gb?because i thought, the athlon 64 3400 is the best 754 socket cpu out there, so, if i wanted to upgrade in the future, there will be no faster socket 754 cpu than the one i have, because i think that the socket 754 cpus are on its max and that the ones that are going to evolve are the socket 939, am i right, shoul i change the 64 3400 for a 64 3500 and the asus mobo socket 754 for a 939 one for just like 40 $? . -i think im right on this-

3.The only socket 939 available from asus is the VIA K8T800 Pro (im only buying mobos from asus becasue iv read too much good comments about them) , is this a good mobo, does the onboard sound ( 8 channels) is good enough for me not to need to buy a sound card and use the 7.1 surround creative speakers?,

BTW: if im right this is a really good decision if upgrading is something coming in aboout 3 years. What do you think about the viak8t800 pro against the nforce3 250gb or the nforce4 (coming in a weeks) should i wait for the nvidia based boards, do you think they are coming out by asus?

Subject: My computer sucks

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Ok. So Im looking for a nice processor for my new custom comp.

My budget is $850, but I already have spent $180 on a Raedon 9800 Pro.

I havent gotten anything else, but I do have (I got from my dads work for free) A flatscreen 20" CRT moniter, keyboard, mouse, and CD Drive and Burner.

I would recommend you to get an amd 64 socket 939 processor, for a low budget the best bang for the buck is the amd 64 3500 socket 939, and for it, get the MSI K8n neo2 platinum nforce3 ULTRA. Then spend the rest of the money in a good case with good cooling and a 80G hd ( i think 80 gigs is just enough...people who get 250gig are crazy)..and get some good ram such as the pqi turbo pc3200 DDr400 cas latency 2-2-2-5. and u r ready because the sound is on the mother board msi and the only thing u need to buy left is the PSU (power supply. 400w minimum - recommended-, or maybe you could buy a case that brings a good power supply). i think your budget can buy that stuff. because u have already the higher things in price (graphics card and monitor...but you the only high price thing in the list i gave u is the cpu

In conclusion i would recommend u to get:
- amd 64bit 3200 socket 939
- MSI k8n neo 2 platinum nforce3ULTRA for socket 939
- hrad drive with at least 60 or 80 gigas of memory.
- pqi turbo pc3200 2-2-2-5
- case with or w/o a good psu..the case should have good airflow ( cooling).
- if the case dosent has a good psu then get a 400w psu from antec OCZ or thermaltake. The best is OCZ.

newegg.com has good prices and good shipping. the rig im getting will be bought on newegg.com ( everything except for the graphics card which is out of stock in newegg, so im getting it for 7 $ more on unitedmicro.com.)
