In Performance all the brands are almost equal.

For the quality i would not buy any of those brands : Club3d , Gigacube (not gigabyte) or Powercolor

The ATI X880 will use PCI, but it willl be approx. $499. That's all I know...
No, no and no. The new card wont use the regular PCI. They will use PCI-X a new type of PCI that nobody has right now.

The best PCI card is the Fx5600 pci 128mb...

I did think it wsa a bit strange that it was $100 more expensive than the AGP version, it PCI-X super fast or something?

Thanks coylter.

Yup pci-x is faster...but we still dont even use the speed of agp 8x so i dont understand why we jump to pci-x soon...

I thought the cards were coming out in June, the X800XT is scheduled for the first half of June. And the others will be out very soon, I think.

Also, anyone know anything about Doom 3? I read something that said that even top of the range current cards won't be able to run it at a high res (1280x1024) should I wait to upgrade to an X800--, or should I buy a 9800xt after the prices come down and wait until new cores come out next year?

Just to point out, the technology you're talking about is PCI Express, not PCI-X. PCI-X is something else entirely, PCI Extended, a format designed primarily for things like gigabit ethernet, the slots for PCI-X are basically a PCI slot with an extra bit on the back, they accept either a standard PCI card or PCI-X cards with the extra connectors.

PCI Express is a wholly new format which will be available at first in two common forms, x1 and x16. The x1 slot is abut the same bandwidth as an AGP x1 slot, but smaller, the x16 slots primarily for graphics are, unsurprisingly, 16 times that bandwidth.

PCI-X is backwards compatible, PCI Express is not.

Just a few more things to note:

The Athlon FX processors are currently not the 'best' gaming processors, they only support ECC Registered memory, which is more expensive and not as fast as Unregistered memory (but less error prone, the chip core and motherboard was designed for the Opteron, a server chip)

The absolute 'best' at the moment is the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.4GHz.

When the Athlon FX is shifted to the Socket 939 package, and the memory controller and motherboards start supporting unregistered memory, then you'll start to see a bigger speed gain. Improvements may come when you can get a 64bit operating system and drivers as well, but that won't be until the end of the year at least.

(All that said, the differences are fairly minute for most games, of the order of 5%)

Also, on graphics cards, Radeons have, for the past couple of generations, been the ones to go for, as their 24bit colour precision and their almost lossless Anisotropic Filtering and low-loss Antialiasing ensure that they perform better at high resolutions than nVidia cards. (although Gearbox reccommend not using AA/AF on Halo)

The latest model of GeForce does have more future-proof functionality, with the full 32bit colour precision and support for Shader Model 3.0, but currently ATI hold the performance crown.

Im thinkig in getting a pc with 2 kingston 256 mb ram, athlon 64 2800+, ati 9800 Pro... I would like to have a recomendation in hard drives, motherboards, and sound cards for a gaming pc in which i could play halo online.

The X800 has just been launched, so expect it to hit the shelves in six to eight weeks, with the normal drop in price for the 9800 that will entail.

I generally go for a graphics card upgrade every three or four generations, but buy a top end card (currently an FX5900 Ultra) that will still chug merrily along after a couple of years (hell, most of my PC games would be happy with my old GeForce 2 Ultra)

If you're going to get an Athlon 64, I wouldn't reccommend using anything less than a gigabyte of memory. 2x 512 is a good dual channel motherboard would do the trick.

I'd actually hold off on a motherboard for it yet, as the new generation chipsets (K8T800 and nForce 3 250) have just been launched, and it will take a little while before they filter out into the channel.

That said, MSI, Abit, Gigabyte, and Asus all make very nice boards, and I've heard good things about DFI as well. (My current board is an Abit one, albeit getting a bit venerable now, as it's a KT266 chipset)

BTW the best current gaming CPU IS the fx-53 not the p4 3.4ee...

hmm in fact the duron 1.4 ghz is faster than the celeron 2.4ghz so your cpu is worse than a duron 1.4ghz. This can be seen HERE.

Celeron are also very slow in windows.

Ok but i still have the question: should I treat my Celeron like it has 1.4 Ghz (or something around there.)

I feel like I was ripped off. =(

Where can I find overclocking guides? I'm looking for one to overclock an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ @1666Mhz to 2000Mhz. And also one to overclock a 9800pro to 410Mhz and 720Mhz, (I can't remember which one each is, memory and the other one, you can probably guess) I don't want to push too far seeing as this is my first time overclocking.

Thanks Coytler. I have a question though. So i'm getting a comp in August. And I want it to be able to play games within 2 years at least. Price has to be 2,500 or cheaper and I can't make my own. Sadly I need to buy it. What do you suggest?

So when are these new graphics cards coming out? and which will be best for halopc?

Can somebody design a pc for me and post it on here for me, remebering I want it calibrated and for halopc, and to make halopc run smooth always not sometimes but contantly smooth. If you can make me a pc where could I buy the replica from on the internet. Thanks boys, later.

Is there any special hard drives brand? Also, what sound card, one not too expensive, would you recomend for a gaming pc?

Check out TweakTown.com. Lots of great guides. From optimizing your windows environment to a full blown guide to optimize Halo. They have overclocking guides and links to other overclocking guides. Why do you need to overclock the 9800pro? That should already be able to run anything. I used the Halo guide to get my Geforce FX 5200 to be able to run halo smoothly but still look good. Can't wait to get a new vid card. Thinking about the ATI 9600XT.
