Coylter, please evaluate this system for me;

AMD Athlon XP 2000+ @1666Mhz
Asus ATI Radeon 9800xt
2x 512mb Corsair Value RAM
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
Matsonic mc8137c motherboard

How long do you think it wil last? I'm thinking of upgrading the CPU and Motherboard next year to a 64bit proccessor, and compatible motherboard. What do you recommend?
This isn't limited to just Coylter, anyone can respond if they know their stuff.

Your cpu is gonna be your bottleneck
Get a barton 2500+ because it can easily be overclocked to 3200 speed and do not cost much more.
Get the asus a7n8x-deluxe and you wont need the sound blaster because the onboard sound will be VERY good.
Get a motherboard based on the nforce 2 chipset. Like the a7n8x-dlx i just pointed out.

so what's better for multi tasking (i.e. hooking up ur comp to two monitors using one for a dvd and the oter for websites or something). Also is a mobility 9700 the same as a normal 9700 radeon?

Any good cpu can do that.

No, the radeon 9700 is not as fast as the regular 9700. It is underclocked to use less power.

Are you sure I shouldn't get the sound blaster? I'm going to get surround speakers and I think it would help. Also I really would prefere a 64 bit proccessor, just so it will last a bit longer.

The deluxe version of the a7n8x-x as a very good onboad with 5.1 support.
In fact its like a complete sound card on board. Its called soundstorm and its very good.

Is a "Barton" compatible with my motherboard? It uses the same socket, and the OEM sound card is cheaper than the new motherboard. The stuff I'm getting already costs just under £600, so I need to save as much as possible, but thanks for the advice.
Also, can someone please give me a link to where I can get PAL 9800xt bios, and a guide to how to flash the asus 9800pro into a 9800xt. I would appreciate that quite a lot. :-)

First of all, when you write a guide like this, you need to put down the truth. The main thing that irritaes me is what you said about the prescott. Basically, it runs hotter, becuase it is made that way! The limit for a Northwood is about 65c, the Prescott's is about 75c. And, the 1MB of L2 cache makes it smoother at the same speeds. Technically speaking, the Prescott performs worse than the Northwood at speeds lower than 3.5GHz, but the difference isn't noticable, the 512KB difference in L2 cache is, however. Not to mention the overclocking capabilities of the Prescott far outway the Northwood. In fact, the Northwood has already almost reached it's limit at 3.4GHz, it might be able to make it to 3.6GHz without any hitches, but very doubtfull. The Prescott has been clocked to the 4.5-4.75GHz range on phase change. Now the Gallatin (EE) is by far the best OCer and performer. My other gripe is that you don't explain anything, other than opinions. You need to explain why X is better than Y, or people will make more stupid decisions. That's all I can think of for now.

First of all : You are an intel fanboy
Second of all : Prescott need Watercooling to reach those speed.
Third : Prescott is gonna get better clock speed when the D0 stepping are out (not before 3-4 month)
Fourth : What , you want me to explain everything even the smallest detail? HEY WAKE UP! I am not making a book here. If you think you can do better then....do IT.

4.5-4.75GHz range on phase change
A northwood can also reach those speed with PHASE CHANGE. But i dont think the majority of people have a plase change system at home huh!?

EE p4 dont perform better than the aFX-53.....Show proof of what you are saying....and please....dont link me to intel page...

Fine, I'll get a barton 2500 OEM. Will it work on my motherboard? I think it should, and did I say I was getting a 9800xt or pro? Well, if I said XT it was a lie, I'm getting a 9800pro with the R360 core and the XT ram. I want to bios flash it, and I already have the 9800xt bios from the Asus website... what do I do with it to make the flash?

Hey Coylter

I was reading this online test of a sapphire (i think) 9800 series card and they said that it was so large you would need ot sacrifice the PCI slot next to ure AGP to fit it in, is this true? I can't remember the exact card but it WAS 9800 series. I just don't want to fork out for a new card and findd i can't fit it in my PC :S and i really cant afford to give up a precious PCI

regards
Tempest

The sapphire card has quite a large heatsink, which is why you might need to sacrifice the PCI slot. The Asus cards have low profiles so might be better, but the are more expensive, the 9800pro 256 does come with an R360 core, which makes it a downgraded xt, hence the price. That's the card I'm getting :-) just bios flash and overclock, and it's an XT, voila!

You should not flash to an xt bios because a lot of people have artefact problem after doing this....and btw you dont gain any performance .... only more voltage. You should just overclock the card ... it would go high since its the r360 core.

Yup , its a special 9800pro with extra cooling for more overclocking....regular 9800's only take one slot.

Do you have any experience with it? As in, do you know how high I could get it? With just the stock cooling fan and heatsink, and inside a well ventilated 2 fan case, with 2 fans (1 in, 1 out).

Also, what make is it? That may affect the oc-ing ability.
