I have 512 mb of ram, if I double it(buy another 512 mb), how much of a performance improvement can I expect? Also would it be worth about $175(Link to it)?
I have one of these, and want another, but not if it won't improve much. I'm sure it most likely will improve of course, but will it be noticable in Halo, and other new games?

My comp.
AMD Athlon XP 2500
512 mb of ram(see link above)
Nvidia GeForce 5700/256mb
80gb HDD
Oh, and a 19" CRT.

if you dont plan on overclocking you could get some cheap no-name ram for 80-90$.
You will see performance improvement in game like MMORPG or any game that has big environment.

How do you overclock anyway? And how do you prevent overheating?

I'm kind of new to computers.
My last P.O.S. computer:
Intel 133mhz
2.1 gig hdd
32mb ram
?video card?

It was time to upgrade, wouldn't you say.

Im getting a PC in a week. Its this pc: http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachine s_T3065
I want to know if i had to upgrade anything from it, like to change the graphic card to an ati 9800 pro 256mb, because i want to play games with no lag of any kind -not spending too much money cause i cant afford something like an ati x800xt with an Amd FX 53- with my dsl connection.

I have another cuestion.. what is the difference between windows xp home and xp proffesional.

The radeon 9800pro 256mb is a waste of money get the 128mb version.
I cannot insist on it more: Build your own computer . They use cheapo parts to make computer like this. You will end up with some crappy ram and things like that.
The radeon x800pro is almost the same price as the radeon 9800pro 256mb.
In winxp pro you can put a password on everything and some other little advantages. In winxp pro you can also have an unlimited amount of computer in a local sharing network.

BTW the computer is realy expensive.

Dell and other branded computer are hard and expensive to upgrade. They use different bios wich prevent any form of overclocking and only let you vanilla settings.

Ok coytler I decidided to take your advice and i'm goingto make my own PC. But this raises a lot of questions. Fist of all, what can you tell me about the AMD Athlon 64's? And what proccesor would you reccomend and a mother board that matches up with it and plus a case that mtches up witht he motherboard.

And also what would you reccomend XP Pro or XP Home?

Right now the best a64 socket 754 board is the asus k8v k8t800. But i would wait for the new nforce 3 250 based boards.

The best board right now is the asus k8v k8t800.
The only nforce 250 mobo out is the MSI K8N 250 neo (something like that)
Socket 939 is the new socket that all AMD cpu will use for a while.

Which one is better the K8 or the nforce250? Does intergrated sound make the proccesor work harder? Cause if it does i don't want the nforce 250. And also how long should i wait until more companies make the mother boards for the chipsets?

Also socket 754 has like 1600 mhrz something (i forgot) and the socket 939's have 800 mhrz so does it make the 754's better?

Sorry for double post.

939 has 1600mhz ht bus and 754 has 800mhz (at least the high end models).

nothing, because macs kick PCs' ass.

I didn't read any of these posts because they are all pointless. Get a Mac. You won't regret it.

Can you mix different RAM speeds? I have 256mb PC2100 (DDR266), and am buying 1024mb PC3200 (DDR400). Can I mix the two speeds? Also what effect will the FSB of the CPU have on the RAM speed? Right now my FSB is 266mhz, will that limit the PC3200 to run at only 266mhz?

yes, BUT, in the BIOS, you can select different speeds that are effected by slight changes in the multiplier. So you can run PC3200 at its 400mhz, and mabye oc it if its good ram. Mixing is not recommended PERIOD (it would slow your comp down). As well, how many ram slots does your motherboard have??

EDIT-
Deathgame, you will need a better gfx card. Im assuming that yours is also before 8.1x graphics card, which is a BIG nono. If you dont want to spend lots of money, grab a radeon 9200se w/128mb of ram (from Sapphire, Gigabyte, ge-cube, etc). I know that some of them make a MAC version so you shouldnt have any trouble finding one.

So the FSB of the CPU doesn't affect Ram speed? the mobo has 3 RAM slots which is why I was wondering... Ahhh well, I guess I'll just give it to my sister then.

Your ram will run at the speed of the slowest ram you have.

Yes and no. You can make your ram run faster but it will not be synchro with the cpu and will cause problems.

You should always run your ram at the same speed as your fsb.
