Hey coytler, whatever happened to the X600 series of cards by ATI. Are they decent or what? I saw them being sold on pricewatch for like $190. Are they good cards, or a fluke by Radeon?

ic, was just curios. Well i got an email saying that my 9700prp order couldnt fly since they were out of that item. I am actually very happy about this. I just got a bunch of money for my birthday and im gonna get a 6800nu. I found a 128mb version for $284.00 and im wondering if that would be a could card to get that would last for a few years. If you know of any other cards under $300 that you think are better, tell me about them and refer me to a site where i can buy them or something. thanks.

The Compaq X just recently came out. For those of you who dont know what that is, its a gaming computer released by compaq and its really good. I know its a prebuilt one and you all believe in custom builds, but i saw it for $1599.00 and it had the Geforce FX 6800gt in it. Go to compaq and customize it the way you like and look at the price. I like compaq, they sell there stuff for ceap and i have never had a problem with thier stuff. Check it out at Compaq.com

your rich, thanks for sharing. Dont get the P4 emtreme edition if your custom building your PC. Its just to damn expensive. You can get equal or better preformance out of the AMD Athlon FX, just listen to coytler:

Athlon FX (51-53)
Pretty much like the P4 Extreme edition but ..... faster and with 64 bit (more like a bonus).
Those are simply the fastest.
If you have problem playing halo with those one you are smoking good things or you have a very bad video card.

He did not lie. Its a good card BUT you should have get the 128mb version wich should be cheaper and as fast (if not more).
Whew! Glad to hear I didn't get scammed too badly. O.K., I'll bite: Why would the FX5700LE-TD256 ever be slower than the -TD128?

Increasing your resolution is only videocard side...The cpu is not going to hold you back.
Thanks for the tidbit. I did not know that.

Well i am not sure if i understood that but halo 2 is not coming to pc. BTW you should never upgrade for games to come .... only for games that are out....
Last part of your point: Agreed.

First part of your point: *IS* a huge chunk of my point. IF Halo2 were coming out, it would be a 3 or 4 year wait. Those who are agonizing over the whole affair should just realize that, this Christmas, they can buy Halo2 AND the Xbox to run it for the same amount they would pay just for the video card to run it on the CPU (**IF** it were available to run on CPU). **AND** if they get it on Xbox they don't have to wait 4 years (or forever) to play it. I call that a "No brainer."

Hey Coylter, thank you very much for the very useful info; not just in answer to my post, but your guide all the posts that followed. I feel like I have gone from "almost totally clueless" to "almost savvy" on video cards for gaming rigs in the last 2 weeks; and most of it I attribute to reading the entire 11 pages of this thread.

THANK YOU!!

EDIT: Thanks, also, to HaloHappy and others who shared their experience.

Well, here I am again with another video question:

My FX5700LE works very nicely with respect to frame rate: I have all the goodies on and am in 800x600 or 1024x768 (forget which). Everything looks beautiful in campaign, and is nice and smooth. However, on the mp maps I am having problems with contrast. In darker areas of the map (like inside bases on Death Island, and trying to get up the paths to the sniper spots on the valley walls of BG) it is like I am in pitch dark. To get up the path to the sniper cave in BG, I have to follow the trail from base until it barely starts to climb; then I need to look way up and gauge my progress against the skyline of the valley walls.

Yes, I've done the obvious and tweaked the brightness and contrast of my 3 year old 17" monitor; but it helps very little. Again, I haven't noticed any problem on campaign. (On the PC, have only played to about "Flawless Cowboy." Still, I had no problems in the dark bowels of PoA.)

Any suggestions?

Hmmm i realy have never heard of that but it could be a monitor problem, 3 years is a bit old.

Yep. Thinks will really get awesome with that x800pro, but with the rig you got, Halo will work fine.

That would be the Radeon 9600se hard at work. That and many other things = gone with the x800 your getting. This card (the 9600se) runs Halo, but not well. The x800 will make everything lovely. Youll be playing with all eye candys on high at 1024x768 no sweat. You could probably play it at 1280x1024 if you want :)

Coytler, is the Presscott really as crappy as you say it is? Im ordering a 2.66ghz Pentium 4 at 533FSB and 512k cache and im hoping to god its a Northwood. From those specs, can you tell if its a Northwood or Presscott. Is it worth the risk buying?? Im getting it as a bid right now for $56.00 :) so i hope its a good move
