I'm certifiable.

I've used gmax in the past, a freeware version of 3DS Max. Baka made an excellent conversion tool called Chimp that converts gmax output files into files that Tool can interpret. I will say that gmax isn't the most intuitive program to use... but it looks like most 3D modeling programs are a bit weird.

-- Steve never did finish that map, alas. Maybe someday...

Edit: looks like my link to Chimp doesn't work right now... if you think bungie.net forums are buggy, wait'll you get a look at Gearbox's. (Sharp dig at the pro-vBulletiners.)

OK i just downloaded those programms here is what i have to say

Blender: um out of 10 i would give it 6. i could not open a .map file and ithere would be stuff already made when ever i started a new builder page also zoom and movement is a little buggy. yes i am a noob but when i had SP1 i had 3ds Max and i could use it fine. i guess i will hace to learn how to use this a little more

GMax: ok once again i could not open up a .map file. you said it was like 3ds Max well not really i would go to open up bloodgulch.map and it came up with an error say you can not open this file because it is not a .gmax file. Well duh i wanted a programm that opens all tags, shaders, ect. including .map going from what you said saying its like 3ds Max i would give it 4 out of 10

Thank you for sending me info on those programs if there are anymore please tell me i would very much appreciate it. ALSO MAKE SURE THESE PROGRAMS OPEN .MAP i yes i want to make my own map but that is for later once i learn how to use the program. right now i want to take it easy by opening an already made map like bloodgulch and building tunnels, putting guns and vechicels in. so keep that in mind please

P.S. thank you very much Mike_100, BobBQ, and Anton P Nym for sending me info on programs. If i was doing somthing wrong when trying to open the maps please tell me if there was somthing i needed to do please tell me or give me a tutorial. thank you all and keep sending me programs.

I think you have to break down .map files somehow to open them in a 3D editor like 3Ds, but im not sure.
Also another 3d program is Milkshape 3d, but I wouldnt recommend it for maps.

Just so you know, there is no off-the-shelf software that will open a .map file. that's a proprietary format of Bungie's. (At least in the case of Halo.)

gmax is just a 3D modeling program... all it can do is build new map geometries and objects. These then have to be processed by Tool (in the Halo Editing Kit) into Bungie's tag format; then Guerilla (their tag editor) and Sapien (their level manipulator) can work on them to integrate a new level.

As far as decompiling existing maps... uh, that's "no-go" here but you may want to have a look at http://www.halomods.com to see how they do it.

-- Steve never did finish his map... never got it to the point where Chimp could compile it into something that Tool could recognise. *sigh*
