What is the best motherboard I can get for under 150$? I'd like for it to hold at least 2GB of RAM.

Lol, well yes like Ioniz I would have to recommed AMD, simply because of the price and because they run cooler.

Depends on the socket you want, though. 478 is a bit old, but this Intel board is a good one for 478.

For LGA775, where the pins are on the motherboard...weird...the DFI LANParty or this ECS board are good - at least I've heard from others that they are.

Just read some reviews and such on the motherboards you want to narrow down your choices. Don't just take one person's word for one mobo and buy it: check the out the good ones, spend a few weeks figuring out which is best.

I'm very unfamiliar with AMD boards and processors. I have a 2.4 GHZ P4 processor with a god knows what motherboard, my brother built it (the whole computer) before he went into the military...the RAM maxes out at around 760 MB, so I'm not sure if I should go for a whole new AMD processor and board. Whats your suggestion? I don't want to spend too much money tho...

ps my specs are:

p4 2.4 GHZ
1 GB of RAM (although only 760 is usable)
Radeon 9600 PRO Video Card
100 GB Hard Drive (83% free)

It seems to run pretty slow for what it should be, so I'm blaming the motherboard.

ur processor=athlon xp 2400

i suggest u sell ur pc right now. part by part on ebay. then buy a complete new one, unless ur willing to stick with right now. Whats ur maximum budget? well, heres my idea of a future mobo. http://www.chiefvalue.com/app/productdetails.asp?submit=& item=13-128-268&ATT=Motherboards&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch

whats ur maximum budget again? u can sell all thses parts on ebay, and get some extra cash for it.

I only have about 150$ right now. I have a 400$ tv on ebay I am selling right now. I'm pretty sure it will sell.

BTW that link didn't work.

What parts would I sell? I can see my processor and mobo are probably outdated, but 1GB of RAM seems decent and I think my video card is good enough to live by. If I can all I would like to do is replace the motherboard and processor.

BTW thanks for the info

These are like what I want...

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-1 03-483&DEPA=0

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-1 31-517&depa=1

These are pretty expensive though, so maybe you can suggest something a little less pricy?

get the athlon 64 3000, then overclock it. it'll then match an athlon 64 3200. Also, a8n-sli is good but also try the a8n-e mobo. it'll be better and less pricy.

However, u'll need a new video card. Sell, the 9600 and ur other mobo on ebay, then use that money to get x700 pro or 6600 gt or 6600. Make sure its pci express!

Hey Steel, uh, you can't pop any old processor into a mobo.

That AMD is socket 754, and that mobo is socket 939...totally different. You need a AMd Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939 and a DFI LANParty nForce 4 Ultra. That is a good setup at a low price.

If you want the more obsolete socket 754, the socket 754 Athlon 3000+ paired with a VIA chipset should be good, or even nForce 3 Ultra. Either way, the sockets need to match.

To be safe, shop around and make a list of what you want, bring it here and I'll look to make sure it's all compatible.

Thanks Sexy Legs, that is much more within my price range. I had a question though. The AMd Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939 only operates at 1.8 GHZ. Since im a total noob with AMD, I'm assuming this is faster than an Intel 1.8 GHZ processor. If not, wouldn't this would be a downgrade from my 2.4 GHZ P4 processor?

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahahahahahaha

*falls down and cracks up*
AMD has a different clock speed ratio. the athlon 3000 = intel 3.2 gigahertx in performance. Sure, its clock speed may be low, but its power inside the chip= a intel 3.2 gigahertz processor.
Anyways, buy it. Its a good thing. . However, u'll need a new graphocs card though.

It looks like I will be getting the combo you mentioned sexy legs. A AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache, Socket 939 64-bit Processor on a ASUS "A8N-SLI Deluxe" nForce4 SLI Chipset Motherboard. I wouldn't know where to begin with installing this so I will probably just have PC Club or wherever I buy it from do it. Of course I will get a second opinion on this before I go and spend $300, but thanks for the info guys...

btw Ioniz I am basically spending all the money I have on that combo. Unless I can sell a 2.4 GHZ for however much a high quality video card costs, I don't think I will be able to afford it. I wouldn't even know how to take the processor off the mother board (I tried once lol).

Things to know:

1. A SLI motherboard has space for two video cards if you choose: so you can get one and then get another one down the road - it's a great upgrade process.

2. It uses PCI-express graphics ports, so your AGP won't work - all new motherboards do.

3. There are two types of 3000+, the Newcastle and Winchester cores. Winchester is maybe $10 more or so, but runs cooler and has multiple other advantages.

Socket 939 is new, about one year old or so. If you do want really cheap you can get socket 754, but know that AGP has about two years left. You might think about waiting on buying this stuff until you can afford a motherboard, processor, and graphics card.

I think I messed up my video card. I downloaded that ATI Traytools off that Guru3d site but didn't really know what I was doing. I didn't actually tweak anything, i just opened the program and now whenever i try to play games this pops up:

http://putfile.com/pic.php?pic=4/10011102068.jpg&s=x2

What should I do? I uninstalled ATI Traytools and that didn't work and I also tried reinstalling my cards latest driver.

On other note, I think I won't upgrade until I am able to afford a PCIe video card. Which one should I get for the best price?

Nevermind, I figured out what happend. Anisotropic filtering was set to 16x for some reason and my video card can only handle 8x.

whats ur new vid card? If u get SLI, i suggest u get dual 6600 gts. Anyways, the pc u got is Top Notch. I wish i had one like that. *sniff *sniff lol

Anyways, ur a8n-sli might be too much for u maybe an a8n-e mobo instead?

Why dual 6600GT's? Two equal one 6800 Ultra and are the same price. Instead, get a 6800 Ultra, and later get another when you can. Otherwise you'll have to buy twice as much in the future.

hmmmmmmmmmm, yes but does he need a 6800 ultra? anyways, he saves money (200.00) is he gets 6600 gts.

Heres my plan. I think I am going to buy the processor and board to start off with. There is no way in hell I will be able to afford a video card after that even if it's 200$, so I'll just save up and buy a 6800 ultra whenever i save up $400+. Until then I'll stick with my outdated Radeon 9600. Maybe I can sell my P4 for 100$ or so on ebay? I also have an extra 40 GB hard drive...how much do those sell for?

EDIT: Dumb question - Windows XP will still work on an AMD Processor and board right?
