For me it is the pure nostalgia of making all of the same jumps, looking over the same bridges, hearing the same sounds, and a host of other small things.

This is actually the stupidest thing ever posted on B.net:

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

That is a good way of putting it, going back to an old friend. Although I have not played Halo: CE in a while, I finally played the campaign again since god knows when. It is amazing how Halo: CE still has more replay value and better game play than most modern First Person Shooters that are being released to this day.

  • 01.17.2009 10:34 AM PDT

That's true. Most FPS's nowadays are designed to shock and awe the player, while keeping up with all the current trends and necessities, which really is too bad, because that is traded for replay value. Look at CoD 4, for instance. It's great the first couple times, and there's Laptops and the Arcade, but after that, there's nothing left.

To play or not to play....

I just love exploring and finding new ways to go througha level. For example on time I tried to keep a sniper gun with me through out the game as long as I could. Another time I play I might try to be more sneaky and stealthy. Another time I might use the pistol only or try knicking a Banshee and flying through the level with it.

Halo CE was cool straight up but the really cool thing about it was the way you could try different ways of defeating enemies. Awesome game. Though I do admit it getting just a tad old now and I fear a little too familar. Still good to play no doubt :).

For me, it is always the soft, crunching sound of the M12 LRV tires stirring up small rocks while you drive. That is the one distinctive sound I always remember from Halo and it always seems to stand out for me.

Vive la canadienne!

IMO the thing that bring you back every time is the story, the original mystery about the covenant, forerunners, and the flood.

No other game comes close to that as they all use a common idea.

  • 01.21.2009 6:15 PM PDT

Well, the mystery is something that rarely got used. I can think of a few examples, but not many other than this, where the game left a lot of questions, but not many plot holes.

The Risk Is Worth The Reward.
Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War.

I just love everything about Halo CE, I can't really pick out any one thing.

It's just about my favorite game of all time, just a little outdated graphics wise.

And yes, an old friend indeed.

Playing CE is Like Going Back to an old Friend....And remembering why you stopped talking to them in the first place

=)

  • 01.25.2009 10:26 PM PDT

So...why did you stop talking to it in the first place?

Well said. I feel like every pixel and polygon is somehow sacred.

somewhere in the heavens...they are waiting. I love the Marathon Trilogy.
Halo CE will always be the best game in the Halo franchise. What a perfect game.
(Proud LONGTIME owner of the PC and Xbox versions of Halo CE)

Every time I play through Halo CE I never get bored, why can't Halo 2 and 3 be that way...

"its not the years, its the mileage"

Indeed. I've been playing "games" since pong; and Halo CE is still my all time favorite. It just feels 100% dialed in from start to finish; in all aspects. There have been times that I've bought a new game, played for ten minutes and then thought to myself "wtf, I could be playing halo!" and put in my old tried and true in lieu of the new game.

Halo CE has my vote for best game, ever. Old friend, indeed.

Halo Ce just seems to do everything right. Its still playable by today's standards. The sign of a truly awesome game.

It's kind of wierd how even after I play Halo 2 and 3, CE just seems to mean that much more instead of fading away.

Just message me on live.

The difficulty of Legendary, it's like a friendly rival.

  • 02.05.2009 1:25 PM PDT

The fact that Halo: C.E. still has the most replay value of any game that I have come across. I remember playing that game so much that I could run around on Legendary pistoling Hunters to death and plasma 'nading elites with little effort.

I have never been that good at a game since nor have had any desire to. Halo: C.E. just has the right dynamic going with the covenant that keeps adding depth to the game, something the sequels have not been able to reproduce.

You know, I just figured out an awesome analogy of Halo. I agree with you, OP, yes it is like going back to an old friend. And someone else mentioned that every object and pixel is somehow sacred, I feel that way too. I think that unlike other games which get old and boring, Halo is like whisky, as it ages, it gets better in a way. It matures, gains experience, but doesn't get boring. It seems that as you played it more and more, you saw things differently, and the game had different things to offer you. Truly a classic.

Shadowrun & Halo 3

Halo: CE FTW

  • 02.08.2009 10:09 AM PDT

Yeah, I started playing Halo CE again on Legendary and I just got to The Library. It's interesting, when I first played Halo I was in college. My friends and I would literally stay up all night and play multiplayer and then try to beat the game. Now that I'm going back through it all, it's like I knew I was experiencing something awesome and now, looking back, I didn't know how good I had it. I used to actually play The Library on Legendary over and over. To me, it's the best level ever. Halo just had a mystery to it and the game made it fun to explore and discover and made it exciting and terrifying. It had everything. It also has multiplayer levels like Prisoner and Boarding Action. I mean, come on, nothing has come close to beating it yet. Even on the 360...

They're focusing more on gimmicks and graphics now, and generally just keeping up than awesome gameplay and great map design.

R.I.P. Halo 2
11/9/04 - 4/15/10

- B( )B

I think what makes it so dear to me is the times had when this was the game. The times had at LANs and playing through on co-op speculating about and anticipating the next in the series.

I used to get an adrenaline rush if I heard the Halo theme while before Halo 3 came out, but then Halo 3 concluded the series and I have no games to anticipate like I did for Halo 2 and 3. Sure there is ODST, but having no MC in it deeply weakens the anticipation for it.

  • 02.09.2009 7:39 AM PDT

When ever I ask people what Halo they liked the least I'm always told Halo CE. When I asked why they would reply that its graphics are horrible and the ending left a big hole which disappionted them. This always struck me as odd for they were comparing CE to present day games in the way of graphics, but if you think about it CE was the most hi-tech game at the time. It had top of the line graphics and the storyline I mean its the first of a trilogy you can't end it at the first game. Halo 2 doesn't match up to the original. For the most memorable part of the game was the Maw the final countdown rushing to the end in wondering whether or not you were going to make it to the other side. What did Halo 2 have a final boss sequence that was sketchy at best(no offence BUNGIE). Halo CE will always be the greatest FPS of its time and would remain that way for years.
