I'm sort-of-ish new to the boards, so I'm not quite sure if this is the right board for the subject. I need help being able to use my 360 controller on Halo: CE, as the title suggests. I let Windows XP successfully install the drivers for the controller, but I don't know how to actually get it to work. I go to settings, and at the top, where you change the input device (the default is keyboard/mouse), I can't select the controller. Clicking the arrows to switch the device doesn't do anything, for that matter. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know how to fix this either, I've tried, and the same thing happened to me, too. But I kinda recommend using the keyboard & mouse, because the Xbox controller limits movement, and actions, creating a type of disability, or lag. Whatever works for you though, good luck.

If you're using the drivers that Windows installed automatically, you may consider installing the drivers from the website and see if that'll solve your problem.

Otherwise, my suggestion would be to download some alternate (non-MSFT) drivers--which can also fix the silly "dead-zone" problem. I would link you to the website that has the alternate drivers, and a good tutorial, but it's down at the moment. So I'll try and get my own upload up with the drivers/instructions all-in-one for yah.

Edit: Also, are you using the USB 360 controller, or the wireless one?

Turns out it was just a dumb mistake I made, I didn't press "controller pads" or that subject that's right under controls setup. I had to enable the controller on my account before being able to use it. And as far as the "dead-zone" problem, I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. My controller plays as if I were playing it on the 360 (it's wired, btw). Thanks for the help though guys :D

All of my 360 controllers have a slight drift when playing halo PC. The joysticks do not center 100% correctly, which on the xbox is not a problem due to the analog nature of the system. On PC a digital driver is used, and any deviation from the center position causes you to run fullspeed in that direction. This sucks majorly when you are sniping on boarding action.

A forger and a halo 3 gamer. Its not the only game i play but its my favorite.GT Dr FRIE

The easiest way is to by a USB 360 controller charger.

but than again the only time ive seen this was a featured packaged USB drive that comes with a flight simulator for PC but maybe you can by them individually.or you could by a logitech dual action thats what i use

This is because the default drivers sucks. To fix it, you should download XBCD here. You can find a guide here. (btw, the websites with the guide does have a downloads sections, but the driver download doesn't work. BUT, the driver profile downloads still work, and you'll need those).

If you can get the XBCD drivers to work, that'll fix your issue in Halo PC right-up. The problem is that the default MSFT drivers don't account for the thumbsticks "deadzone", which causes you to constantly move to the left in various games.

AccordionDog: What? You can't use a 360 controller by plugging in the charger to your computer. All the charger does is transfer power. This is one of the silliest things I've heard xD

That solves my problem. Thx.

It does more than transfer power, it has a data cord in it, but now all that is known is it transfers the controller's name (360 wireless via play n charge) and the battery level. It is unknown if it can transfer other data. M$ employees say it can, but no driver has been made (if possible).

Regarding the play and charge kit cable... nope. It does not transfer controller input data, and no matter what drivers you have, that won't make a difference.

Anyway, the XBCD drivers worked? :]

I would much prefer to be able to use the Xbox Controller to play Halo PC, but I can't because I don't have the adapter.

Actually, you wouldn't need an adapter. The Original Xbox controller actually uses a USB interface. With some clever wire-hacking, you can do just that.

You should try Googling that up.

I was unable to install the XBCD drivers successfully, I don't know if it is Vista's fault or what. I installed them before on my old PC with XP for my guitar hero guitar no problem. When I go to this list to change the driver, the XBCD driver does not show up.

Edit: After a few searches I have found out:
1) The XBCD drivers do work with Wireless controllers (Not sure on this one, the most recent posts about this were from 2007)
2) Since the XBCD drivers are not signed, it will not "work" with my Vista x64. (You have to press F8 everytime on startup to disable it or else you get an error).

I decided im just going to use XPadder. It maps your controllers buttons as keys/mouse movement.
