I think that the thing that was meant to save earth, uncovered it, the cole protocol.

I would imagine that many ships used the cole protocol and escaped or were chased down and killed, slaughtered, murdered...

Well, if enough ships went in different directions away from earth, maybe the covies figured that the humans are leading them AWAy from earth. So if they took into account all of the search and destorykills they made and what direction the humans were going, they could REVERSE the human ships' flight(if they were going east, the covies go west) and see one common point that all the humans ships were going AWAY from. So if 4 ships, each going in the four cardinal directions, were leading away from the center of the compass(EARTH), people who were trying to find "earth" would reverse the ships flight. In other words, if a ship is going east and another west and another north and another south, they could reverse their directions and find a common vertex.

I'm pretty sure the ships might still travel in the general direction of earth they might just skip over it i doubt the ships computers can keep a log of where they've been in slipspace.

Ok, not a bad theory. But I think that the Cole Protocol said they were to do a series of random exit vector jumps, not just away from Earth.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Ackerson made at least one jump to Earth without Cole-ing. It seemed like foreshadowing to me. -But I guess I don't really have a better theory.

in order for the cinvenant to back track the ships, like you said they could..the ships would have had to start at earth. But lets they dont, they are north of earth and flee to the east, the convies go to the west and find nothing

The theory is based on if they were on a plane, with the four cardinal directions, it would only work if it was flat, but they could go north south east west up down, just about any direction

Hmm, but if every ship went in a random direction (which they are suposed to do), then you just reversed their path, then the vertex would end up being the place they just left. Think about it. The only place where all the paths of the ships would cross if you traced a line behind them would be whatever area they were all leaving at the same time, after that the lines would scatter again. Try it on paper and see what i mean.

Also, don't forget that the books said the covies didn't think new ideas up on their own. Remember when cortana found out all the potential their slipspace systems had that they didn't use? They can't do anything unless they see it first. All their technology and tactics are from the forerunners, so i doubt any of the covies would think of that idea in the first place.

My theory is that guilty spark wanted to get revenge for MC stopping him and destroying the halo ring, so he told the covies where earth was in retaliation. Remember, guilty spark found otu where earth was when he went into the Pillar of Autumn's computer system.
