It's not something to do in Halo, but it's a question for debate. If the Halo Installations are built *just to contain and study the flood, then why did the Forerunner bother making an elaborate infrastructure within vast terrain of mountains, canyons, rivers, seas, lakes, plateaus, and grassland?

*it never said that every halo installation was for one purpose, each one could have it's own function.

Possible Theories that I've come up with: (1)The Forerunner also lived on the Halos as self-made colonies,
(2) The Forerunner were/are humans and they built the Halos to appear to have an Earth-like enviroment,
(3) The Enviroment on Halo: Alpha (the first Halo in halo) does not reflect the enviroments on the other halos, the Forerunner may have built each halo's enviroment to appear like the enviroments on other worlds they had expanded and been to.

ridiculous and disproven theory:
(4) The covenant were the Forerunner, and they built the worlds to look like Earth as part of their involvement to study and plan the eradication of the human race, they made the halo's terrain look Earthy to help train forces to get used to combat on Earth.

Post any other theories you might have, as well please!

I'm just throwing an idea out here, but perhaps the Forerunners weren't just one race, but a collection of races, similar to the Covenant. Since you say that not every halo has the same environment, perhaps they were created with each races' environment in mind when creating the halos by the Forerunners, giving each halo a unique touch that reflected at least some of the races in mind. This is just a thought that I had.

Well... I didn't say the there will be different environments on other halos, I said maybe, and nobody else like my thread... that makes me sad *sob*

I thought your thread was interesting. ^_^

Anyway, I guess we'll know if this theory has some basis when Halo 2 comes out and we get to see that brand, spanking new (well, new to us anyway) halo ring.

Perhaps the Forerunners buit Halo(s) with such an environment to be appealing/attractive to as many types of alien species as possible. For example, including from Humans, all species encountering the Halo are able to survive on Halo (Jackyls, Elites, Hunters), except the Methane breathing Grunts of course.

Over the course of the Foreunners existance, they perhaps discovered that an Nitrogen/Oxygen atmosphere with a number of ecosystems such as water, mountains, swamps, grasslands, etc. is the most likely to be habitable to the largest number of species.

As for what the Forerunners intended to do with these species on their Halo is a guess... If the original Halo is intented to study the Flood, then perhaps this is simply the 'default' Halo design which also happens to appeal to the Flood. And all subsiquent Halo's have this same complex design to better study/contain more complex species who are better able to utilise technology.

In summary, I have no idea.

But you raised some good Ideas about the Forerunner being like a peaceful version of the covenant, and about how that reflects on the halo environments.

heheh, we all have the same avatar.

Another thought. As you said the halo rings where created to study the Flood. Would it not make sense in the course of that study to see how the flood reacted to diffrent enviroments? Notice that the halo ring is placed between a gas giant and a barren moon, both bodies are completely incapable of supporting life. This makes escape from the ring impossible without a ship of some kind. So the Forrunner could purposfully release the flood on Halo and observe how they reacted to the diffrent enviroments without having to worry about them escaping and/or spreading.

Maybe everyone had a halo ring and were allies but covenant attacked human halo ring and the humans abandended it and thats why it hs water trees and all that but when grunts landed they sufficated because they breathe dioxide and that explains grunts pack on their back
