Back in 1997, when it was first created, Bungie.net meant two things: The (free, I might add) Myth multiplayer metaserver, and the website which was the place to keep track of stats and check for updates and community news. Sorta like it is now, but focusing on Myth rather than Halo 2. Then, in November 2001, since the old style b.net smacked of Mythness, which was no longer even owned by Bungie, the site got a makeover, to make way for Halo, basically. A forum was added (the Underground we know and love), and the Seventh Column made its triumphant appearance.
The main problem was that you had to recreate your profile, since Myth profiles no longer worked. Which is the reason nobody has a "Member since" date before the 10th of November (well, except Achronos, and that's just because of the size of his ego).
Sometime later (2003), the Passport issue arose. Members now had to link their profiles to a MSN passport. I distinctly remember that thousands of angry Mac users got really really pissed off, because some of them had bothered to read the Passport User Agreement thingy, and really didn't like some of the things it said. A few of these people, and some other thousands who were just inactive, had their names changed to "NoPassportxxxx". Eventually these people were deleted from the univers--- I mean bungie.net. The big furore was mostly forgotten, and everyone got on with their lives.
In March 2004, the web team announced that a new look Bungie.net was going to be launched very Soon™. On April 1st, we were offered a glimpse of it. Some people actually believed that the new b.net would be an MSN group. Then on the 12th, the New Hotness was released. The rest is history. Well, the whole thing is history. Shut up, it's a turn of phrase! Yes, they actually turn!
