There is a sticky in Zanzabar about this. The DVD players they shipped with the early systems were faulty. They wear down over time. I'm on my second XBox, and this second one has had it's DVD play replaced once. So, basicly had this problem twice already. It gets worse over time untill it may even stop detecting regular CD's and DVD movies. You can buy a new one or go to http://www.richspsxparts.com/xbox.html to get a new drive for $50, or just the laser for $30. They don't charge for shipping. That's where I went the last time this happened to me. I got the whole drive because it looked easier, and haven't had any problems since I put it in (probably 4 months ago).
Like one of the other posters said, I've heard people say they call 1-800-4MY-XBOX and -blam!-ed and moaned untill they got a new one for free. Give that a try FIRST, because once you open it they won't touch it. It's worth a shot anyway.
