I admire how pure Marathon's MP is. Its so simple, yet subtlying complex. Its not down to who has the best "twitch finger" or who the computer likes best. Its down to tactics, ambushes, weapon choice, and skill. Halo, being marathon's "sequel", thankfully feels very much the same in MP (if you go small map, and only a few people, 2-5). Marathon didn't need to limit you to two weapons to make you have to truely choose your weapon for the occasion. =)

There's just something about Marathon, the odd lighting, the music, the labrynthine levels, that makes it awesome. Every single level in Marathon (that I have played, at least) has the aura of mystery and impending doom that the Halo level 343 GS has.

Agreed. Whoever voted Halo has obviously never played Marathon.

I laughed through 343 GS. There was nothing behind it but walking around forever shooting hundreds of not even scary little balloon-monsters. Congrats, you've got a needless carnage fest... this is what seperates Marathon from the rest of the FPS genre. Marathon actually had a reason and a story around its carnage, and there was never just needless running around in circles just popping off enemies and then switch to a cutscene of Master Chief talking and cracking jokes and flipping switches. In Marathon, there were no cutscenes. You had to do that stuff yourself.

It's almost like comparing books to movie counterparts. Way back when Marathon was made they didn't have cutscenes and whatnot in the games, so you had to use your imagination, like reading a book. But now games are crap, they do everything for you, it's just point and shoot and watch a movie of your 'victory'.

Anybody who comes in here voting for one without playing the other needs a good kick in the rear! It's mainly going to be Halo players not ever playing marathon... why? we have up threads for how to get the first two marathon games, and obviously you are using a computer to access this site so you CAN play it!!!
I wouldn't say Halo has no storyline, but it isn't as prominent in game play, nor as mysterious, and doesn't really require much thought or understanding. If you really get into the story of marathon its amazing... Marathon is to gaming what The Matrix was to filming at its release... it was an entirely new concept and one which, sadly, was never really followed by anyone

You're right it is a great game and I've tried it but it didn't seduce me like other games I don't know why... But it is good and in some ways better than halo it's just not my cup of tee...

bah

I immensly prefer Halo to Marathon. Perhaps M2 will be much better, but this wasn't a poll for M2. I think a lot of the Marathon players are a little too into story...

Its a FPS

If it was story alone, marathon would win hands down. but when you put the other aspects of gaming in (I'm not including graphics) I think they are about the same

Marathon was great for its time, but I see Halo as the evolution of Marathon; what Bungie wanted Marathon to be.

In fact may people are beginning to wonder if Halo is connected to the Marathon Trilogy in some way(beyond the fact that the Marthon symbol turns up a few times in Halo)

So, I picked Halo.

Has to be Halo. I love all the Marathons, theres just something really fullfilling about knocking a bit at a time on a Juggernaut, and the story is good. But then again the Halo story is also, and with the books and the detail we get from it, it just builds that much more onto it, which I am sure will be given to us in even more details once the 2nd game is out. Oh, and Durandal sooooo annoyed the &£%$ outta me I couldnt ever vote for that swine :P

Yeah I am one of them...I know people keep saying they ain't connected, but at the end of Marathon it goes all dimensional jumping etc so they could be tied together. That and Guilty Spark sure reminds me way too much of Durandal...and then in Halo they discuss "Marathon-class colony ships" ahh hmmm. But then again, Bungie have always played head games with us hehe, probably why we love them so much and keep on coming back for more :)

ARGH!

"Marathon was great for its time, but I see Halo as the evolution of Marathon; what Bungie wanted Marathon to be."

If somebody says that again I'm going to hit them! If that is what bungie wanted marathon to be, thats what marathon would have been! there is a huge style gap between them. Marathon was created in an entirely different way to Halo, and creates a far moer complaex story line without need of books to boost it AFTER you've played... sure, marathon was "good" for its time but its still good!

Personally, I find ALOT of the people who argue this point do so on graphics/controlling/Gameplay etc... I understand you are probably arguing on different grounds, but alot of the people who dis marathon do so because its a more complex game, a game where running in a blowing -blam!- up just gets you killed, and doesn't carry you across the finish line in a heroic blaze of bullets and plasma.

I think that there is a connection between Halo and Marathon. I've made 1 ore 2 topics about it but no one could answer if there is a connection. There are so many things that put the games together but then again there are just as many hwo does the opposit so I'm confused...

I guess a reason why i dont play Marathon so much is that i like console games (Halo) better because you get a better sound by plugging it to your Stereo (sound is everything for me i spend all my money on Hi-Fi! hehe...)

Put very simply, Marathon is for a different - more unique - generation of gamer. Marathon is for the person who appreciate games for their style, story, and complexity rather than how many bad guys their are to kill with big guns. Sadly the gaming world has been filled with kiddies who don't give a rat's ass about story and just want to get online and shoot people with their huge missile launchers and plasma rifles. I think it's a more mature gamer that can thoroughly enjoy and appreciate what the Marathon trilogy is regardless of when you're playing it.

PS: As for Halo-Marathon connections... Halo just rips the concepts of Marathon and re-uses them, not to mention using the same symbol repeatedly as if to brag the fact.

Jep... Halo has the Marathon logo everywear, in the maps, in the menu and even on the caracters. I think Bungie made Halo to try to remake a state of the art game like Marathon but still it had to be accepted of the big amount of people hwo like "aim, shoot" games. That may be the reason why Halo isn't as complex and for some people complicated (boring). Still Marathon is a great game but I just like Halo better. Maybe it's just the fact that I don't like PC and MAC games (not even Halo to PC) i like consoles better. The sound, the co-op play and the social thing that comes when you play and discuss with your friends about a great game that gets even better when you have company...

I have played both Marathon and Halo, so it is a tough decision to make. But if I think back on all of the good times and hours of playing I spent with Halo, I would have to say that Halo takes it just a by a small bit. Marathon is an absolutely amazing game with a really cool storyline, but Halo just had something extra that made me like it more.

So you'll probably all think I'm crazy, but I would have to say Halo takes it just by a nose hair. But both games are super crazy ass amazing and I love playing them both, and hopefully Bungie keeps making great games like Marathon and Halo for years to come.
