Ok I have a dedicated server working. But I can't have 3 people in it without them laggingo out! I do not have dial up and these are the results when testing my internet speed. Test 1 Test 2 Test 3 In test 3 it says I have 100kbps up, is that my problem?

hmmmmmm., go on network connections in settings, and don't LIE about ur TRUE connection. if its low cable put it in. And 100 kps isn't too good. Get a better connection maybe? By the way, do u get spring break in canada chewy?

The network settings in Halo are for download aren't they? I haven't lied if those tests are true. Of course we get spring break, we just call it march break.

Its PC and it doesn't stop people from lagging out does it? Anyway, what kind of connection (upstream and downstream) would you recomend?

Well, u'll need a faster processor, and at least a dsl cable HIGH, ilike me if u wanna host a good game. And chewy, how come u post so often now these ddays? I think u spend more time here, than halo. Edit: what are ur pcs specs?

The one the server is running on is a celeron 2.4 ghz with 512 of Ram. I am going to ask my dad how fast our connection is when he gets home but he will probably say its fast.

I need to test my server some more but its hard getting people to join. If some of you people could join it would be appreciated.

What kind of connection do you have? Not the speeds, the ISP and service.

Guys - you NEED to remember that bandwidth and latency are two totally separate things - I think it's your ISP, chewy, not the connection - I'm using DSL Lite and I haven't had anyone lag out yet...

Well u live in candna gumball, where things'll get laggier, cause of the rough mountain ranges(rockies etc. )., I think thats the prob. Ur pc's okay gumball, but ur not supposed to run a server on ur own pc. usually u have to pay.

I live in southern ontario, the rockies are 3000km away (roughly 2km per mile) so they shouldn't make a problem. My ISP is sympatico.ca and I can run a server on a home pc, its just not optimized for it. My dad is coming home late tonight so I can't ask him, I will ask him tomorrow though.

I haven't played on the bungie servers in a while. My usuall ping on the servers I do go to is between 100 and 200. Is there any way to speed up my connection / reduce latency without getting a better connection?

I will try. I found a nice site about dedicated servers and bandwidth. Too bad I had to go before I could read it all.

I've never seen latency mentioned in the ads for various cable/dsl providers. What is it, how do I assess my connections latency and find out about prospective broadband providers latency?

I just tested my connection using this link .

Upload was the same for all 3 tests: 413.3 kilobits/sec. Downlod varied: 714.4, 952.6, 1428.9 kilobits/sec. Tests were done one after another at around 12:45 a.m. Eastern Daylight Savings Time. Has this got anything to do with latency?

I have Earthlink DSL which, as I understand it, is provided through Verizon.

I'm in Park Slope, Brooklyn NY. From what I've seen in poking around the cable providers websites, I can get at least a few different cable providers: Roadrunner, Optimum Online, Time Warner and my current provider, Earthlink. Anyone getting good service in my area? Who are you connected through?

higher bandwitdh connection does not necessarily mean a lower latency connection, chewy - keep that in mind. Run a google search for online latency tests and try that. Don't get me wrong - bandwidtch is important, but so is latency.

I will. I found out what the problem was, I had a crappy modem so it could only handle those speeds. I am hopefully getting the new modem today.

Where are you getting the modem from, your ISP? I just got out of a "live chat" with my ISP and their techno wiz didn't know what latency was or how to test it. He also did not give a direct answer when I asked if they'd provide a new modem if my connection speed did not improve after trying their suggested fixes, (turn it off then turn it on, clear out the cache in my browser and dump cookies). My browser's not open when I play Halo, so I don't know why that should matter.

Ya I am getting it from my ISP but I'm not buying it. I could but I would still have to pay the rental fee !!!??!??!?!?!!!:( so it doesn't cost me anything if it doesn't work. I looked for latency tests on google but all I found were sites that documented how people tested for packet loss and other crap that doesn't actually help me. If anyone knows of a simple, click here for a latency reading test pleas post it.

I know of one latency test that woks nicely, but I don't have the link right now. You have to download a small file. I'll try to remember to post the link. I'm glad that ya'll are actually learning about latency. Back in my day, when broadband was something that only Houston, New York, Altanta, and LA had, if you lived in the suburbs you could get 'broadband' via satellite. Your upload went through the phone line and your download came via a satellite on you roof. OH THE LATENCY! Oh the humanity..... 4500ms, anyone? At best. Yeah, when you sent the request to the server to dl a file it would download quickly - once it started.... I'll try to be more specific about latency later.

I think I saw some test for latency on the above site, (it required you to download a small program to run the test– I'm using a Mac, so I figured it would not run), which I got off the link you sent me:

http://www.forumplanet.com/haloplanet/topic.asp?fid=6707& tid=1463498

Based on his reccomendations, I tried hosting a game for 7 players plus myself. I got no lag and no complaints about lag.

Thanks for the link.

The connection settings in halo are for upstream(how fast YOU SEND data), not downstream (how fast you RECEIVE data). 100kbps upstream isn't all that good for dedicated servers, but 3 ppl getting lag with that speed isn't abnormal. I have 256kbps both downstream and upstream, and i don't host more than 6 ppl at one time on a dedicated server. Joining your own dedicated server on the same computer also creates some lag, i think.
