Oh, on another point, why does "the" in "the_Ender" not have a capital "T?" Simply curious.

Bacause when he wrote the name, he didn't capitalize it? Just a guess

That was unnecessary, as well. Read my previous post again.

Why? Because I think it's aesthetically more pleasing with a lower case "t." A capital "T" might distract from the actual pseudonym.

Well, different people have different aesthetic views, I suppose. Thank you for answering my question.

I am 18 soon, but what annoys me is people who feel the need to use over-elaborate words and perfect diction and grammer so they can feel they are morally and intellectually superior than others. I have no qualms about spelleng incorrectly and such and i oftenshorten words or i don't capitalize. Y? Cos I don't have to. Thank you.

The only reason I use proper typing etiquette is because of all the blasted papers I have to write in college. If I use short-hand, bad grammar, spelling, etc., then I might do so in the paper, not realize it, and get a bad grade for putting lol, brb, or anything else you might think of on one of my hand written papers. Yes, we have to hand write papers sometimes. So, I feel it's best to practice proper typing etiquette even when not writing for a grade. As for big words. . .screw 'em! Big words just make you pause for a split second (and don't fool yourself, everybody does) in order for your mind to process it. Takes too much time if you inundate your compositions with superfluous words. (Joke, get it, ha ha)

Age, "Age is but a State of Mind" as old people would say. What is age, except the contious ticking of the clock to your own eventual doom? Age has no purpose, and it serves noone. Age and Time are like the eternal enemies of mortal beings (as are cars, rocks, guns, trees, bunnies, poisonous creatures, etc.) And one has nothing to gain, nor lose from age, except one's own time. Spend everyday like it were a gift, and then each day would sift together like a bland coffee cream. What you want is to enjoy video-games, without making fun of someone's age on account that they can't type 190 wpm (w / m, words per minute, w/e) and that instead of saying, " Wow, that was really funny what you did! I thought It was the funniest thing ever...Gosh, you're funny. " they say " Lol, tht wz rely funy dud, Lol, ur funny." It shortens the gap between your astonishing speed to type, and their ditzy, tapping like bird style that would make you stare in open horror. Just because they're younger, more naive, more open to random acts of Aggresion, stupidity, lack of wisdom, moral code (idea of right and wrong becoming a blend of "I want this NOW!") or a wanting to hang out with the bigger kids...doesn't mean that they can't be hardcore MasterChief's deep down inside their cold frozen hearts... Age Withheld for Obvious Belief that noone will Take this for obviously what it states, as kafka was a genious in his writing, I am a genious in my typing...er...well...like kafka, I showed the monstrosity that is ourselves, and that primal fear that we will inevitably become that which we hate most...or...something.

Recon Number 54,

I'll also submit a third option. You might be trying to understand while simultaneously stroking your ego and irritating him.

Here's another related quotation:

You state that you are annoyed by people who use words that you decide are too large or grammar that is "too perfect". I'm not clear how you as the reader of someone else’s words are able to reliably determine when someone has "gone too far" with their proper spelling and writing. I'm even more impressed (or confused) how you can then assign a motive (for them to feel superior to their audience) to the speaker/author and be certain of your conclusion.

The reason that I am repeating back my understanding of what you said, is that there are ALWAYS many possible interpretations of nearly any collection of words. ("screw you!" is hard to misunderstand though) The fact that I was more unclear on the meaning of what you wrote while using proper spelling and grammar makes this point even more interesting.

You then used the abbreviated and less accurate phrasing to convey a simpler concept. I think (assume actually) that this is actually related to the_Ender's point. If the ONLY way that people communicate is by staccato abbreviated sentences, their concepts and ideas must be as brief and lacking in real "communication".

As I said, it is easy to misunderstand or mis-interpret the written/spoken word. For example, there are two major possibilities for my rambling here. I could be attempting (as I said) to better understand how and why you said what you said. Or, I could be a self-superior, bloviating, windbag that is sarcastically trying to aggravate you and make your point.

It's always up to the reader/listener to decide, but how can they be absolutely certain they are right?

Thank you for reading, and I hope that I was able to communicate my thoughts.

I'm re-reading my post to see where i mentioned going to far with proper spelling. But surely you must agree with mefrom this point of view- how some people use words which the average 12 year old is not familiar with. Like: The impending release of Halo2 sends me into throes of ecstacy-instead of - I cant wait till halo2 its gonna be great!
But don't listen to me, because its clear to see that the average user on this forum is smarter than me. Darn.

Not being the smartest doesn't mean people won't listen to you. Ignoring those who are less intelligence is just showing more ignorance.

Based upon recent posts on this thread, I've changed my signature back to its previous incarnation (damn big words!).

Why should this matter to you? Well, I suppose it shouldn't, unless you care about such inconsequential (#%&$!) things, which I personally have found myself doing at odd times in these forums (better than trying to give a damn about anything on the xbox.com or Gamespot forums, where one can be flamed for expressing their opinion--wait--that's happened here, too--$&%#!).

What I'm saying is... Christ, I've lost my train of thought.

Nevermind.

I shall think a little more before posting next time.

Posted because I didn't want to have all that time I spent thinking (and changing my sig) to go unnoticed. Flame away!

Since this topic is related to speech, I'll ask this not-so-off-topic question:

What do you people think of profanity?

I do think its pointless, since virtually all profane words now have basically no meaning. But, although I think its pointless, I use those words every day.

I have not met one person who has not been hypocritical in commanding people not to swear... I simply think people just need to lighten up a little bit more, since they will end up saying the words anyway.

That's just what I think. I had no intentions of offending anyone in writing this post.

Profanity has its place.
When used for shock value I think it can be cheapened (if it isn't all ready very cheap) in the wrong hands.

Take George Carlin, Robin Williams, or Bill Hicks as examples. Would any of their comedic material be as entertaining or funny if there weren't a healthy dose of profanity involved?
For those uneducated in those three (and their more profane works), I suggest "A Place For My Stuff," by Carlin, "A Night at the Met" or "Live on Broadway," by Williams, and "Relentless," by Hicks. (This is in no way a comprehensive list.)

This isn't to say that profanity=entertainment by any means. Rent or buy (it's worth it) Bill Cosby's "Himself" for proof of that. Why is it easier (for me, at least--maybe it's the way I was raised) to pick out multiple profane examples off the top of one's head?

I think it's the lowest common denominator idea: People want to be entertained, and the easiest way to entertain the most people is by going for the shock value reactions among the populace.
Why, if this isn't the case, are so-called "reality" programs so f---ing popular?

Sorry, I hate those shows. Name one, I hate it. Rant over.

For a very interesting look at the "F" word, there's a book by Jesse Sheidlower called "The F Word." It's a fascinating dictionary of just one word.

I leave the floor open for discussion.
