True enough, but the ESRB was created to be a system like the movie ratings system. That means, anyone under 17 shouldn't be allowed to see "R" rated movies, or play "M" rated games. While theaters do as much as they can to prevent "kids" (generic term) from seeing "R" movies, the ESRB is essentially in the hands of retailers and parents, many of which don't seem to be able to be bothered enough to care.
Hell, I don't care. I was just trying to make a point.

The movie rating system and the ESRB don't take into account whether anyone is "immature" or not. It's supposed to be black & white. Without parents and retailers upholding the system the way it should be, there are gray areas. Until the ESRB starts punishing retailers and customers the way the movie system does (or is supposed to) theaters, things won't change. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Foot in ass aside... Really, where are you trying to get?

That's a good question, because it looks like Acidix is trying to get stomped into eunuchood before he reaches 16. Which is probably unfair, but from the content and presentation there's no evidence that contradicts this conclusion.

Folks, content and presentation are important on a forum. They're the only way people have to judge who you are.

If the post is illegible, due to poor spelling or grammar or punctuation or structure, NO ONE is going to take the contents seriously. They'll assume that the sloppiness comes from either lack of intelligence or lack of care. Either way, they won't dig into the contents; they'll just assume that there's nothing there worth reading and move on. (Or they'll flame you, but these poor benighted souls aren't worth troubling yourself about. Unless you want the approval of the Penny Arcade forum crowd...)

So please pay attention to basics. We're not terribly -blam!- about the odd spelling or punctuation error; typos happen, and we're not aiming for Literature in an online forum. Just make sure that what you write is legible, organised into sentences and paragraphs, and reasonably close to being on-topic.

Note that last bit; on-topic is important. If we're talking about presentations skills and literacy and the relation between age and maturity in forum posts, we really don't want to hear about how your cat threw up on your X-box.

Oh, and lose the 'tude. Kicking open the saloon doors and shouting out threats and boasts doesn't work here; you'll just get filled with lead, and then Yoozel or goweb or one of the other mods has to sprinkle more sawdust on the floor to soak up the blood while some poor goomba has to drag the lukewarm meat out into the street. More trouble than it's worth.

-- Steve welcomes you to the forum, if you promise to mind your manners.

People who've learned English after their native language. N. Americans, Australians, New Zealanders, Britons, etc. should be able to spell, punctuate, and grammatically arrange their thoughts better than those who've learned English later in life. So far, I've found that not typically the case. That, to me, is disheartening. I've heard from a Dane and a Swiss that have more coherence in their posts than most of the 14-17 year old English speakers. (50% of those polled). Sad sad sad.

I believe that what you said can depend on that people that doesn't have english as their native tounge knows that their posts can be a bit bad, so they try harder to make them better. Also I think that people that doesn't have english as native tounge is more sensitive to typos than english speakers, since they undestand it less anyway. Many people that have english as native tounge may perhaps not care much about bad grammar and typos, since they think that "I write this way when I chat with my friends, and they understand it. And in the forums, why bother with grammar there? Everyone is probably as good as I am at english, and I understand what I write without any problems"

Or something like that. Sometimes when I chat in swedish, I bother less with spelling and grammar than I usually do.

Hmm...it seems that I got here too late. Well, here's my 2 cents anyway.

The ESRB and movie ratings are like guidelines for the age you should be to play a game or watch a movie. Yet I, personally, consider these guidelines for your maturity, not for your age. I'm sure that even 8 year olds could play this game if they are mature enough! Ignore the ratings. Just use them to tell you what kind of game it is.

I am 12.

I think our friend who's trying to get "somewhere" proves some of our points. Kids seem to come to chat rooms and forums to try and be the most popular. That's never the case, in my opinion. There really is not a "most popular" person in a forum or chat room. Now, respected is another matter. If a person has valuable information to share and doesn't get a big head about it, I feel that they can earn the respect of the group.

Back to parents not paying attention to what their kids do on the internet. I went into a chat room the other day, just to see how it has changed over the three years since I've been off. Well, I put my information on my profile and was honest. 18, M, TX, etc. I wasn't there five minutes and a girl asks, "Hey wanna cyber?". I checked her profile, and sure enough. . .she was 14. I just typed, "You're too young to do this stuff. Where are your parents?" At that, I signed off. Another prime example of parents using the internet as a babysitter.

I'll be on my own side.

yeah thats pretty sad.i dont like chat rooms for that reason

Any parent using the Internet as a babysitter is either very irresponsible, very naive, or both.

Ok, it seems a little ironic to me that we have a bunch of 12-16 year olds telling us that are 19+ about maturity !!! I understand that some kids mature faster than others, but that's a little overkill. I'm mature for my age, but I was never as mature as an 18 year old when I was 12. Also, I realize I have a LOT more maturing to do. I just wanted to share that observation.

Acidix... if you're here to pick a fight, you're in the wrong place. Even an attempt at putting your foot anywhere near The_Ender would earn you a blacklisting not just by moderators, but by most the people who are posting on here. You may think you sound tough, but believe me, I've heard 5 year olds come up with better "tough guy" lines than that...

So yeh, our "friend" has deffinitely just proven our point here... far too many disrespectful and lazy people (mostly young 'uns) think their all that and can do what they want.

I agree with the opinions expressed just recently... if you want your post taken seriously, take the time to make it legible... if not, go right ahead and f@$# about with it, we'll just ignore you and tell you to leave ;-)

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

Thinking that you are completely mature is a very immature thought... Sorry for the contridiction... Its just for future use. We're all immature in different ways.

On another note, there's nothing wrong with young people telling older people about maturity.... since older age doesn't mean more mental maturity... it simply means more experience.

And another note:

Sad, sad, sad indeed.... That's why I like things about the future... perhaps one day humanity won't be that way. Its not necessarily a bad thing that its like that now... but it'd be better if it wasn't, hmmmm?

I'm not entirely certain either of those as true, but I suppose I should take that as a compliment. Thanks.

I agree, but I would say it like this. Modesty is the only sign of maturity. One might know that he/she is mature and be correct. Professing it only serves to disprove it. I hope that wasn't too esoteric.

That's why I like things about the future... perhaps one day humanity won't be that way. Its not necessarily a bad thing that its like that now... but it'd be better if it wasn't, hmmmm?

I disagree here. I believe it is actually "bad." Second, I'm fairly certain that human ignorance and sloth will prevail throughout our blink of an eye existence. That is even sadder, sadder, sadder.

I agree with you... I only said it "wasn't necessarily a bad thing" because I was trying to be a little more optimistic than I normally am.... Oh well... At least human ignorance "getting better" is a possibility, right? Albeit a small one,... but it still gives some a small ounce of hope...

es-o-ter-ic adj. 1. Understood by or meant for only a few specially instructedor initiated individuals 2. Confidential; kept secret

Hope that helps. But I don't quite understand where that fits in with this thread. Maybe I should read it again.

I'd like to thank Ender for making this thread. I tend to stay very far away from the Bungie forums, since the only threads I've ever read (The weekly updates, for example) are completely filled various forms of incoherent drivel. Now I see that there many more mature and interesting people here. Hopefully the less intelligible members of this forum will learn something from this thread. Remember: there's always enough time to spellcheck. ;)
