Do you think Bungie.net could do better with a Karma system?

Example: I have been posting around Bungie.net for 100 days. No warnings, bans and locked threads. For each week a system catches my perfect behavior I get 1+ Karma and this is showed beside the members name or beside there avatar. However if I were to get banned I would lose karma. So in total if I had 10 karma and I got banned for 7 days I would lose about 2 karma which would bring me down to an 8.

Heres my theory on how it can work

7 day ban- -2 karma
14 day ban - -4 karma
locked thread but no ban issued - -.5 karma lost.
ect ect

In my opinion I think this will actually improve the behavior of people in certain forums. This could also help the ninjas because If they see someone with -10 karma for example it would be a easier for the ninjas to keep an eye on that individual to see if the next post he makes could lead him to a vacation.

A big downside I see to this is that people will be making alt accounts all over the place just for a positive karma system. But in the long run as long as they behave and help other members is that really such a bad thing?

I know this might be a little more work for the ninjas and alot more sucking up will be happening but I see this idea work in other forums and its actually quite shocking on how it actually helps. But then again...In those forums members themselves can raise or lower the karma of others. But knowing Bungie.net has about X10 the members I do believe this system can be abused horribly here and thats why I think there should be a system that tracks this.

What are your opinions of this?

Member titles are basically what you are asking for?

No.

However in some way this could also help some people get new member titles so the two can be linked in some way.

Repeat after me: nobody from Microsoft or Xbox Live or Bungie will EVER ask you for your password. Ever. Anybody asking for your password (and probably your Windows Live ID login too) is trying to scam you.

Anytime you see such a message, immediately file a complaint via the dashboard tool on your Xbox, and then BLOCK the user.

Oh yes ladies and gents listen to the big A

I suppose, but what you've suggested is really similar to member titles.
A member is good and has been here for a while, they get a better member title. A member is bad or hasn't been here that long has a lower member title.

Not really...I have seen Mythic members before that are stupid, add no discussion to the topic at hand and are sometimes spammers. Having a high member title does not mean you are the perfect member who is always well behaved.

True but it's more likely that they are behaved.

My thoughts: Yes and no. It should not be visible by members, not displayed by posts other than for the account owner, mods and admins to avoid abuse, this prevents people from trying to get a high value to make their account look 'better'. It should also contribute to a users title although the specifics should never be revealed.

A. I vote no.
B.locked thread but no ban issued - -.5 karma lost.
So if you make a thread and other people get the thread locked, you get punished?

  • 02.06.2009 7:12 AM PDT

The Risk Is Worth The Reward.
Cry Havoc And Let Slip The Dogs Of War.

Its pretty much like members titles, and no I don't think there should be a karma system.

Then there are the people who poop in the mash potatoes. Those people get launched out on their asses.

I agree with Tom in a way. This may be something more useful for the Moderators that hppens behind the scenes.

Not only that but what about those individuals that specifically request for their topic to be locked because the answer they were looking for has been giving.

I'll stick with the system we have now.

Isn't that EXACTLY how we have it now? I thought achronos said there was a hidden karma system already in place.

Well in my post I said a user should be able to view their own Karma value but it shouldn't be easily shown to avoid people boasting too easily.

I never knew Achronos said anything about such a system. If it is already there I don't think mods can view it very easily. It seems a good idea to make it more visible for moderators to make their job easier. But then I don't know the specifics, there could already be tools in place to assist a moderator in their verdict.

Well in situations like that obviously you should not get punished for others doings and if you request a thread to be locked you should not lose karma. Im talking about the type of threads that the OP makes that are pointless.

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

I like the karma idea. The member titles are a bit off, I've been here for around to years (not in this topic obviously)

Your karma system is your member title.
I disagree, although it is in theory the Member title system is too heavily influenced by join date.

Either you're not very active or much more likely you received several bans each year that have kept your title down.

Do we really need a number system to help us identify who we are?

  • 02.06.2009 9:43 AM PDT

My spoon isn't the only thing that's too big

Seeing as how this is all speculation, I can't really take it seriously in the sense that you have no idea what you're talking about.

However, I will say that my ridiculous 14 day ban issued by Skibur for mocking some idiot (a Mythic Member, apparently) in The Flood has made it impossible to get back to a Legendary Member, which makes me think there are multiple member title consequences for a ban.

  • 02.06.2009 9:44 AM PDT

$x='print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x; ';
print chr(36),"x=",chr(39),$x,chr(39),";\n",$x;

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

I still fail to see how this is any different than the member titles... seems pretty redundant.
