With all this talk lately about Marathon, particularly for all you Windows users, I just thought I'd drop by and plug my upcoming Marathon scenario, Eternal, which I intend to be released as a cross-platform full install (just download, unzip, and run), pending final approval from Bungie on the legality of that last matter.

I'm pushing for a July 25th release date for Eternal Mk I (the first of six versions) to celebrate my 22nd birthday and the -790th anniversary of the attack on the Marathon.

Stay tuned!

I've been waiting for someone to show some kind of mapmaking skill and bring something up here... what program are you using? just Forge/Anvil?

Mostly Forge and Anvil, for the Marathon-specific work (shapes/sounds importing, physics, and mapmaking). Also ResEdit as neccesary (term picts and chapter screens - and sounds, I need to remember to import the chapter sounds), and Hex for terminal editing. MML is written in BBEdit, and graphics work is all done in Photoshop of course. I'll be using Blender3D for some new monsters and higher-res versions of the weapons later on.

Cool! I'd be up there doin it with you if they had Forge/Anvil on PC :(
My mac is kinda dead and I doubt its even compatible with the internet :P so using that is out of the question. but yeah look forward to gettin a chance to play it, and I hope this inspires some more people to create maps etc.
*thumbs up*
nicely done

4 new weapons...? if you are still using pfhor fighters can we PLEASE get a staff weapon :-) I've ALWAYS wanted to have one, and the pics throughout infinity and M2 really pissed me off cos you could never get one :'(

Most of the new weapons are scavenged Pfhor weapons. The staff, the Trooper rifle, and both Enforcer weapons. There are also two human Fusion/Plasma weapons (a sidearm and an assault weapon), a S'pht weapon, and an... unidentified weapon of distant origin. Only the 3 of the Pfhor weapons and the Plasma Pistol make it into Mk I though.

Don't have long to wait. The last two maps for Mk I are coming in early this week, just need to make some final revisions and test that it all works, and then we'll be ready to ship. In two weeks as of yesterday... now I'm just waiting for the boxes. :-)

boxes? so you're selling it? I'm confused...

I thought this was a downloadable one... are you even allowed to sell things under the bungie copyright or if you have used forge/anvil?

"We're waiting for the boxes" is an ancient Bungie gag that people who remember the Maratho 1 release will get. Bungie delayed Marathon 1's release for quite a long time claiming that they were waiting for the boxes, the game was done they just couldn't ship it yet without boxes... turns out they had a huge stack of boxes there while rushing to finish the game. So when release dates are pending, especially questionably, the phrase "we're waiting for the boxes" becomes poignant.

The "in two weeks" thing is a related joke - catalogues are required by law to tell you release dates for products you are preordering, but until recently Bungie never gave out release dates (because of the Marathon 1 fiasco). So when you called to preorder it from anyone, the release date was always "in two weeks", because they had to tell you SOMETHING, by law, even if they had no friggin' clue.

For further information, see "Soon[TM]".

Oh and to further clarify: no you're not allowed to sell it, no we're not selling it, there are no boxes to wait for, and it will be available for download the morning of July 25th. Hell, maybe I'll make it at 8:20 AM, just to be perfect :-)

And the Marathon Home Videos show Jason sitting there coding away at the last bits of Marathon while sitting next to a stack of boxes taller than the cameraman.

The preferred drink of celebration as decreed by the Eternals themselves is Midori, particularly the Midori Freeze, as this drink was invented by the Director (yours truly) himself. Failing one's ability to aquire this more esoteric drink, any fine wine will suffice, preferably a cabernet sauvignion, served with blackened chicken in a bleu cheese sauce.
