I have two xbox that I've taken great care of, and both have disk reading problems. It has nothing to do with the care, the Thompson drive is simply unreliable. So no, not any xbox that was well kept will play it, I will have to buy another new xbox. -blam!-in Thompson.

I wouldn't know this from experience, because I dont play many xbox games. However, my friend told me that he has a first gen XBOX (the version that was first sold when ever it first came out) and that a bunch of new games dont work on it. It says it has a dirty disc error or somethin like that. So to play halo 2 you, even I may need to get a new XBOX.

YES! I --blam!-in hate my xbox. It wouldn't play Rallisport Challenge and it occasionally doesn't play other games. It had better play Halo 2 or I'll ... I'll cry and go buy a new xbox.

this topic is very true. if you go to the xbox.com forums, you can see under the technical support forums that it is happening to a lot of people. i happen to be one of them. i called 1-800-4my-xbox yesterday (7-9-04) and they said they will fix it for free but i heard theyre only fixing the first generation xboxes for free. you still have to pay for shipping though. it first started to happen when i bought RS3, then i bought splinter cell 2 and rallisport challenge and it freezes and says the disc is messed up about every 10 mins.

Those of you who still go to school could order a replacement DVD laser assembly for your Xbox and beg your electronics teacher to help you install it.

My Thompson from the original run (and two others people I know) died out. Microsoft "pretended" to fix it but just turned up the power on the laser. (This just makes it die that much faster) and I ended up with the same problem again in two weeks. They afterwards refused to service me.

I replaced my own and it cost me only $15 USD and now I'm back buying games again. A shame. Video game companies have lost a lot of money in the six months it took me to get around to fixing the box :)

I'd have to agree that some, not all, first generation Xboxs have trouble with loading... especially on XBL.

I had a first generation Xbox that sometimes had problems, such as not loading a game.

I've since purchased a Limited Edition Halo Xbox, and I've had no quarrels with it:)

ive got the thompson, and it works fine... then again i dont use it much, just to play halo and DVDs. its a first gen so hopefully the HD wont give me any problems with Halo 2. Is there a way to fix the HD problem? or will i just have to go and buy a new XBOX?

I have an old Xbox with the Thompson dvd drive and I have not had a single problem at all. Ever. I really think some of you are getting worried and scared over nothing. I know Halo 2 is a big thing. If your Xbox breaks or happens to be too old or too bad or w/e, are you willing to fork out the money to plaly Halo 2? There is only so much you can do, and stressing out it not it.

My friends got messed up from a demo disc and nothing would read at all. Nothing. So he got a new one. Then again, he never keeps anything in good shape.
